Union demand wage increase while plants shut down and company operate with public funds
[Mediapen=Kim Sang-jun] Even as GM Korea is struggling to normalize their business, the union is repeating its unreasonable demands and continuing strike.

The union of GM Korea is demanding 5.65% increase in basic monthly salary and an additional 16.5 million won of performance-based pay. However, the company is in a difficult position as the company’s deficit continues and is operating with national tax.

To normalize business and keep his promise with consumers, Kaher Kazem, President of GM Korea is working for the launch of new cars and investment in the Korean market.

Contrary to the president’s efforts, the company’s situation seems bad. The sales volume of Changwon plant is continuing to decrease and the utilization rate has fallen below 60%. There is even a possibility of restructuring.

Even in this situation, the union is demanding a pay raise which may eventually have a negative impact on the consumers. The public are having difficulty understanding the union as plants are shutting down and the company is running with public funds.

“Kaher Kazem’s actions to normalize the company is commendable”, said an official from the auto industry. He added “The union should stop their selfish strike and work together with the company to promote sales”.

As Hyundai Motor and its worker’s union reached a tentative wage deal without a strike for the first time in 8 years, GM Korea’s union should also make an agreement and return to their workplace.
