하지만 최근 이 조용하던 시골 동네가 미국 전역에서 가장 뜨겁게 들썩이는 '첨단 산업의 메카'로 급부상하고 있습니다. 

도시의 풍경과 주민의 삶을 통째로 바꾸어 놓은 주인공, 바로 한국의 삼성전자입니다.

삼성이 테일러시에 거대한 반도체 공장을 짓기 시작하면서, 도시에 어떤 마법 같은 변화들이 일어나고 있는지 알기 쉽게 풀어드립니다.

Have you ever heard of a city called 'Taylor' in Texas, USA? Not long ago, this was a very small and peaceful farming town of about 17,000 residents, where vast cotton fields and quiet rural landscapes were all there was.Recently, however, this quiet countryside town has rapidly emerged as one of the hottest 'meccas of high-tech industry' in the United States. The protagonist that completely changed the city's landscape and the lives of its residents is South Korea's Samsung Electronics.As Samsung began building a massive semiconductor factory in Taylor, we break down what kind of magical changes are taking place in the city.

대기업 하나가 지역에 들어서면 어떤 일이 벌어질까요. 단순히 공장 직원만 늘어나는 것이 아닙니다. 

반도체 공장을 짓기 위해 수많은 엔지니어와 건설 인력이 몰려들고, 관련 협력업체가 줄줄이 둥지를 틀면서 도시 전체에 엄청난 활력이 돌기 시작합니다. 

유동인구가 폭발적으로 늘어나니 당연히 식당, 카페, 마트 같은 골목상권이 먼저 비명을 지르며 대박이 나기 시작했죠.

상황이 이렇다 보니, 테일러시 당국도 늘어난 세수를 바탕으로 지갑을 열었습니다. 7일(현지시간) 현지 언론에 따르면, 시 당국은 도심지역 비즈니스를 지원하고 경관을 개선하기 위해 총 55만 달러(한화 7억6000만원) 규모의 재정 패키지를 가동했습니다. 이 프로젝트는 4개 부문의 맞춤형 보조금 프로그램과 35만 달러 규모의 공공 인프라 개선 사업으로 구성됐습니다.

삼성이 불러온 '돈 바람'을 동네 소상공인에게 골고루 나눠 주겠다는 취지입니다.

What happens when a mega-corporation moves into a region? It’s not just about an increase in factory workers. To build the semiconductor plant, countless engineers and construction personnel flock to the area, and related suppliers nest one after another, injecting tremendous vitality into the entire city. With the floating population exploding, local businesses such as restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets were naturally the first to hit the jackpot.Under these circumstances, the Taylor city government also opened its wallet, powered by the increased tax revenue. The city authorities recently announced a whopping $550,000 financial support package to spruce up the downtown business district. The goal is to evenly distribute the 'money wind' brought by Samsung to local small business owners.

테일러시가 내놓은 보조금 정책을 들여다보면 무척 흥미롭고 따뜻합니다. 거창한 개발이 아니라, 동네를 찾는 사람의 발길을 붙잡는 '감성 마케팅'에 집중하고 있거든요.

테일러시의 모토는 ‘텍사스의 앞마당’입니다. 시에서는 가게 앞을 예쁘게 꾸미도록 흔들의자 2개와 예쁜 간판, 화단 식물 구입비를 지원합니다. 손님들이 친근하게 드나들 수 있도록 문턱을 낮추는 것이죠.

카페나 레스토랑이 야외 테라스에 예쁜 파라솔과 야외용 가구를 놓으면 시에서 비용을 대줍니다. 테일러시를 찾은 외지인들이 커피 한 잔이라도 더 마시고 가도록 유도하는 전략입니다.

도심에 새로 멋진 레스토랑이나 옷가게, 인테리어 숍을 열고 싶은 사장님에게는 인테리어와 전기, 배관공사 비용을 최대 5만 달러(약 7000만원)까지 보전해 줍니다.

Looking into the subsidy policy released by Taylor, it is very interesting and heartwarming. It focuses on 'emotional marketing' that catches the footsteps of people visiting the neighborhood, rather than grandiose development.

Taylor's motto is "The Front Porch of Texas." The city provides funds to purchase two rocking chairs, an attractive A-frame sign, and floral arrangements to decorate the storefronts. It lowers the threshold for customers to visit comfortably.

If cafes or restaurants place beautiful umbrellas and outdoor furniture on their outdoor patios, the city will pick up the tab. It is a strategy to induce out-of-towners visiting Taylor to stay for at least one more cup of coffee.

For business owners who want to open nice new restaurants, clothing stores, or interior shops downtown, the city compensates up to $50,000 (about 70 million KRW) for interior, electrical, and plumbing work.

재미있는 점은 무조건 현대식으로 바꾸는 게 아니라는 것입니다. 테일러시의 자랑인 오래된 '목재 벽돌 도로'를 깨끗하게 복원하고 안내판을 세워, 도시의 역사적 매력은 그대로 지켜내고 있습니다.

The city is setting aside $350,000 of its public budget to install new trash cans and bike racks tailored to the increased floating population.
