[미디어펜=편집국]LS마린솔루션이 약 3500억원을 투입하는 차세대 초대형 해저케이블 포설선(CLV) ‘인터오션(InterOcean)’이 튀르키예에서 용골 거치(Keel Laying)를 마치며 본격적인 선체 건조 단계에 들어갔다. 해저케이블 시장이 AI데이터센터 확산과 해상풍력·전력망 투자 확대를 타고 빠르게 성장하는 가운데, LS그룹의 글로벌 해저케이블 사업을 뒷받침할 핵심 시공 자산이 모습을 갖추기 시작한 것이다.

1일(현지시간) 글로벌 해양에너지 전문매체 오프쇼어 에너지(Offshore Energy)에 따르면 튀르키예 테르산조선은 LS마린솔루션을 위해 건조 중인 차세대 케이블 포설선 인터오션의 용골 거치를 완료했다.

테르산조선은 이번 용골 거치가 프로젝트가 본격적인 선체 건조 단계로 넘어갔음을 의미하는 핵심 이정표라고 밝혔다.

선박에는 약 2억2100만유로가 투입된다. 전장 148.4m, 폭 31m에 케이블 적재능력 1만3000톤, 총배수량 1만8800톤 규모로 2028년 상반기 인도될 예정이다.

LS Marine Solution's next-generation ultra-large cable-laying vessel (CLV), InterOcean, has entered the full-scale hull construction phase following the completion of its keel laying at a shipyard in Türkiye. The milestone comes as the global submarine cable market expands rapidly on the back of growing AI data-center demand, offshore wind development and large-scale power-grid investment, bringing a key asset in LS Group's global submarine cable strategy closer to reality.

According to global offshore energy publication Offshore Energy and Türkiye's Tersan Shipyard on September 1, Tersan completed the keel laying for InterOcean, hull number NB1139, which is being built for LS Marine Solution.

Tersan described the keel laying as a major milestone marking the vessel's transition into the main hull construction stage.

Approximately €221 million is being invested in the vessel. InterOcean will measure 148.4 meters in length and 31 meters in width, with a cable-loading capacity of 13,000 tonnes and a total displacement of 18,800 tonnes. Delivery is scheduled for the first half of 2028.

인터오션은 노르웨이 선박설계업체 솔트십디자인(Salt Ship Design)이 설계했다. 특히 고압직류송전(HVDC) 해저케이블과 광통신 케이블을 동시에 포설할 수 있도록 설계된 것이 특징이다.

LS마린솔루션에 따르면 완공시 케이블 적재능력을 기준으로 세계 5위권에 해당하고 아시아에서는 최대 규모가 된다. 국내에서는 유일한 HVDC 전문 포설선이 될 전망이다.

대용량 해저케이블 포설선 확보가 중요한 이유는 해저케이블이 길어지고 대형화할수록 한 번에 얼마나 많은 케이블을 싣고 시공할 수 있는지가 사업 경쟁력을 좌우하기 때문이다. 장거리 해저케이블은 중간 접속부를 최소화해야 안정성과 시공 효율을 높일 수 있다.

인터오션의 1만3000톤급 적재능력은 LS마린솔루션이 기존 국내 연안 중심의 시공시장을 넘어 대형 HVDC와 해상풍력 프로젝트가 집중되는 북미·유럽 시장으로 사업영역을 넓히기 위한 기반으로 평가된다.

LS마린솔루션은 지난해 6월 테르산조선과 선박 건조계약을 체결했다. 올해 강재 절단을 거쳐 이번 용골 거치까지 완료되면서 설계와 준비 작업을 넘어 실제 선체가 만들어지는 단계로 진입했다.

InterOcean was designed by Norwegian naval architecture firm Salt Ship Design. One of its key features is its ability to simultaneously install high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine power cables and fiber-optic cables.

According to LS Marine Solution, once completed, the vessel is expected to rank among the world's five largest cable-laying vessels by cable-loading capacity and become the largest of its kind in Asia. It is also expected to become South Korea's only specialized HVDC cable-laying vessel.

Securing a high-capacity cable-laying vessel is increasingly important because the ability to carry and install large quantities of cable in a single operation becomes a critical competitive factor as submarine cable projects grow longer and larger. Long-distance submarine cable projects also benefit from minimizing intermediate joints, improving both reliability and installation efficiency.

InterOcean's 13,000-tonne cable capacity is expected to provide LS Marine Solution with a platform to expand beyond its traditional domestic and coastal installation markets into North America and Europe, where large-scale HVDC and offshore wind projects are concentrated.

LS Marine Solution signed the vessel construction contract with Tersan Shipyard in June last year. Following steel cutting earlier this year and the latest keel-laying milestone, the project has now moved beyond the design and preparation stages into physical hull construction.

인터오션의 전략적 가치는 글로벌 전력망 투자 확대와 맞물린다.

AI데이터센터와 산업 전력수요 증가, 재생에너지 확대에 따라 국가와 지역을 연결하는 대규모 전력망 구축이 세계적으로 확대되고 있다. 특히 장거리 대용량 송전에 유리한 HVDC가 핵심 인프라로 부상하면서 이를 해저에서 시공할 수 있는 전문 포설선의 중요성도 커지고 있다.

인터오션은 HVDC뿐 아니라 고압교류(HVAC) 전력케이블과 광케이블 포설에도 대응할 수 있도록 설계됐다. 해상풍력단지와 육상 전력망을 연결하는 사업은 물론 장거리 국가기간망과 해상 플랫폼 전력화 등 다양한 프로젝트에 투입할 수 있다는 의미다.

국내에서도 서해안 해상풍력 전력을 수도권과 주요 산업지역으로 보내기 위한 대규모 HVDC 전력망 구축이 추진되고 있다.

LS마린솔루션 입장에서는 인터오션 확보를 통해 국내 대형 프로젝트뿐 아니라 북미와 유럽에서 진행되는 해상풍력·전력망 사업까지 직접 겨냥할 수 있는 시공능력을 확보하게 된다.

단순히 배 한 척을 추가하는 문제가 아니라 LS그룹이 글로벌 해저 전력망 시장에서 ‘케이블 제조업체’에서 ‘종합 해저전력망 사업자’로 사업영역을 넓히는 과정으로 볼 수 있는 대목이다.

The strategic value of InterOcean is closely linked to the rapid expansion of global power-grid investment.

As electricity demand from AI data centers and industry rises and renewable energy capacity expands, countries around the world are investing in large-scale transmission networks connecting regions and national grids. HVDC technology, which is particularly efficient for transmitting large amounts of electricity over long distances, is emerging as critical infrastructure, increasing demand for specialized vessels capable of installing these systems beneath the sea.

InterOcean is designed to handle not only HVDC cables but also high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) power cables and fiber-optic cables. This will allow the vessel to participate in a wide range of projects, from connecting offshore wind farms to onshore grids to long-distance national transmission networks and offshore platform electrification.

South Korea is also pursuing large-scale HVDC transmission infrastructure to deliver electricity generated by offshore wind farms on the country's west coast to the Seoul metropolitan area and major industrial regions.

For LS Marine Solution, securing InterOcean will provide the installation capability needed to target not only major domestic projects but also offshore wind and power-grid developments across North America and Europe.

The vessel therefore represents more than an expansion of LS Marine Solution's fleet. It is part of LS Group's broader effort to evolve from a submarine cable manufacturer into an integrated global submarine power-grid solutions provider.

주목되는 부분은 인터오션의 투입 시점이다.

선박 인도 목표인 2028년 상반기는 LS전선이 미국 버지니아주 체서피크에 건설하는 해저케이블 생산법인 LS그린링크의 본격적인 생산 시점과 맞물린다.

LS전선은 미국 현지 생산기지를 통해 해저케이블을 공급하고, LS마린솔루션은 인터오션을 활용해 해상 운송과 포설·시공을 담당하는 구조를 구축할 수 있다.

LS그룹이 추진하는 이른바 ‘설계-생산-시공’ 글로벌 턴키 체제가 완성되는 셈이다.

글로벌 해저케이블 시장에서는 케이블 생산능력뿐 아니라 포설선을 확보했는지가 수주 경쟁력을 결정하는 주요 변수로 꼽힌다. 대형 포설선 공급 자체가 제한적인 상황에서 선박을 자체 보유하면 공사 일정과 비용을 통제하면서 대규모 프로젝트를 일괄 수주하기 유리하기 때문이다.

이번 튀르키예 용골 거치는 지난해 발표된 2억2100만유로 규모 투자계획이 실제 건조 일정으로 구체화되고 있다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.

2028년 인터오션과 미국 LS그린링크가 동시에 가동 궤도에 오르면 LS전선과 LS마린솔루션은 북미와 유럽을 중심으로 확대되는 HVDC·해상풍력 해저케이블 시장에서 생산부터 시공까지 자체 수행할 수 있는 체제를 갖추게 된다.

결국 튀르키예 조선소에서 시작된 한 척의 선박 건조가 LS그룹의 글로벌 해저 전력망 전략을 완성하는 마지막 퍼즐이 되고 있는 셈이다.

What makes InterOcean particularly significant is the timing of its deployment.

The vessel's scheduled delivery in the first half of 2028 is expected to coincide with the ramp-up of LS GreenLink, LS Cable & System's submarine cable manufacturing operation being developed in Chesapeake, Virginia.

This could create a structure in which LS Cable & System supplies submarine cables from its U.S. manufacturing base while LS Marine Solution uses InterOcean for offshore transportation, laying and installation.

Together, the two assets would bring LS Group closer to establishing an integrated global turnkey system spanning cable design, manufacturing and offshore installation.

In the global submarine cable industry, access to cable-laying vessels has become an increasingly important factor in winning contracts, alongside manufacturing capacity. With only a limited number of large cable-laying vessels available worldwide, owning such a vessel can give contractors greater control over project schedules and costs while improving their ability to bid for large-scale turnkey projects.

The latest keel-laying milestone in Türkiye is therefore significant because it demonstrates that LS Marine Solution's approximately €221 million investment plan is progressing into tangible construction.

If InterOcean and LS GreenLink both enter full-scale operation around 2028, LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solution could establish an integrated platform capable of handling submarine cable production through offshore installation as they compete for the rapidly expanding HVDC and offshore wind markets in North America and Europe.

In that sense, the vessel now taking shape at a Turkish shipyard could become the final piece in LS Group's strategy to build a global submarine power-grid business.
