[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] TCL Sues Samsung Over Alleged ‘False Mini LED Advertising’…But Faces Its Own QLED Labeling Controversy
Chinese TV maker TCL has taken Samsung Electronics to court in the United States over the use of the “Mini LED” label, alleging that Samsung misled consumers by marketing televisions as Mini LED products even though, according to TCL, they do not contain the technological advancements normally associated with Mini LED technology.
The lawsuit creates a striking contrast with another technology-labeling dispute between the two companies just six months ago. At that time, their positions were reversed. Samsung challenged TCL's use of the “QLED” label in Germany, and a German court ruled against TCL's advertising of certain QLED models.
According to Reuters, TCL filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, seeking to stop Samsung from using the Mini LED designation on the disputed products and demanding unspecified monetary damages.
TCL alleges that Samsung's M-series televisions, launched in March and marketed as Mini LED TVs, do not contain the technological advancements associated with Mini LED and are instead derived from conventional LED television products.
Samsung has said it will vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit and expressed confidence in the accuracy of its product descriptions and the quality of its televisions.
No court has yet determined that TCL's allegations against Samsung are true. The broader significance of the dispute therefore lies not in whether Samsung's products can already be described as “fake Mini LED” TVs, but in how competition over the technical terminology used to market televisions is increasingly moving into courtrooms.
Six Months Earlier, the Roles Were Reversed…Samsung Challenged TCL's QLED Label
The latest lawsuit is particularly notable because TCL itself has faced controversy over the terminology used to market its television technologies.
In March, a court in Munich ordered TCL's German subsidiary to stop advertising certain models, including products in its QLED870 series, as QLED televisions after finding that the advertising could mislead consumers.
The lawsuit in that case was brought by Samsung Electronics.
The German court found that consumers purchasing a QLED television could reasonably expect quantum-dot technology to contribute meaningfully to improved color reproduction, while the structure used in the disputed TCL products did not deliver the expected improvement.
In other words, Samsung and TCL have effectively switched positions as plaintiff and defendant within a period of about six months.
TCL has also faced a separate debate over the terminology used for some RGB Mini LED televisions.
Questions were raised over whether products without a dedicated red LED chip should be marketed as “RGB Mini LED.” The disputed TCL architecture reportedly uses two blue LEDs and one green LED together with a red phosphor to generate red light.
TCL is now challenging whether Samsung is properly using the term Mini LED, even as TCL itself has faced questions over the use of QLED and RGB Mini LED terminology.
The underlying technologies and legal issues are not identical, however. Rather than treating them as equivalent cases of false advertising, the disputes point to a broader battle over how far television manufacturers can go when applying increasingly complex technology labels to their products.
Why Sue Now? Samsung Retakes Global Mini LED Lead With 28.2% Share
The dispute is difficult to separate from the rapidly shifting competitive landscape between Samsung and TCL in the Mini LED television market.
According to market research firm Omdia, TCL held a 30.2% share of global Mini LED TV shipments in the first quarter of this year.
The picture changed dramatically in the second quarter.
Samsung climbed to first place with a 28.2% share of global Mini LED TV shipments, while TCL ranked second with 23.3%. Hisense followed with 17.2% and LG Electronics with 12.4%.
Samsung expanded its Mini LED lineup and lowered entry prices, intensifying competition with TCL and Hisense, which had built their positions partly through aggressive pricing.
Market share is also explicitly referenced in TCL's lawsuit.
TCL says it outsold Samsung in U.S. Mini LED televisions between 2023 and 2025, but argues that the competitive landscape changed after Samsung launched its M-series models in March at prices below TCL's least expensive Mini LED televisions.
TCL alleges that Samsung's marketing of those products as Mini LED televisions misled consumers and harmed TCL's sales, goodwill and market position.
The lawsuit therefore sits at the intersection of two battles: a technical argument over which products legitimately qualify for the Mini LED label and an increasingly intense fight for leadership in the fast-growing premium television market.
According to Omdia, Mini LED televisions accounted for 13% of global TV shipments in the second quarter of 2026.
Chinese manufacturers had rapidly expanded their presence in the segment through aggressive pricing in recent years, but Samsung's return to the No. 1 position this year has changed the competitive landscape again.
Six months ago, Samsung challenged TCL's use of the QLED label in court. Now TCL is challenging Samsung's use of the Mini LED label in the United States.
What began as a technology battle on television screens is increasingly becoming a legal fight over pricing, market share and ultimately what manufacturers are allowed to call their TVs.
