[Mir's Global Radar] Samsung Electro-Mechanics Plans ₱2 Billion Expansion of Inductor Production in the Philippines, With a Larger Project in the Pipeline
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is preparing an additional investment of about ₱2 billion to expand inductor production in the Philippines.
The project is separate from the company's previously announced ₱50.7 billion expansion of multilayer ceramic capacitor production.
According to Philippine business publication Context.ph, citing the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, Samsung Electro-Mechanics Philippines is preparing two additional manufacturing investments in Laguna.
The first, valued at approximately ₱2 billion, has already been submitted to PEZA for approval.
The investment would finance a new high-technology manufacturing building at Calamba Premiere International Park to expand Samsung Electro-Mechanics' existing inductor business.
A second manufacturing project is also being prepared. PEZA officials expect it to be larger than the ₱2 billion first project, although its investment value and product scope have not yet been disclosed.
Separate From the ₱50.7 Billion MLCC Expansion
The significance of the latest investment lies in the fact that it is separate from Samsung Electro-Mechanics' much larger MLCC expansion already underway in the Philippines.
PEZA said earlier this month that Samsung Electro-Mechanics Philippines is undertaking a ₱50.7 billion expansion project supported by presidential incentives under the CREATE MORE Act.
The newly disclosed ₱2 billion project, however, is focused on inductors rather than MLCCs.
Inductors are passive electronic components that help stabilize electrical current and manage power in electronic systems. Their importance is increasing as AI servers, automobiles and other high-performance electronics require more sophisticated power management.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is not entering inductor production in the Philippines for the first time.
The company's Calamba operation has manufactured inductors for years. The latest investment would instead expand that existing business through a new high-technology manufacturing building.
A Second, Larger Manufacturing Project Is Also Being Prepared
Samsung Electro-Mechanics' Philippine investment plans may extend beyond the ₱2 billion inductor expansion.
The company's Philippine unit is also preparing a second manufacturing project.
According to Context.ph, the second project has not yet been formally submitted to PEZA, but officials expect it to be larger than the first ₱2 billion investment.
Its product scope has not been disclosed.
It would therefore be premature to characterize the second project as another inductor investment.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is expanding its broader high-value component business at the same time.
Earlier this month, the company announced a KRW 1.0722 trillion contract to supply AI server MLCCs to a major global customer during 2027. It also said it has secured long-term MLCC supply agreements with more than 10 global customers.
However, the company has not publicly established a direct link between those AI server contracts and the latest Philippine investments.
About 30 Suppliers Eye the Philippines as the Ecosystem Expands
Samsung Electro-Mechanics' expansion could also attract more of its Korean supply chain to the Philippines.
PEZA visited Samsung Electro-Mechanics' headquarters in Suwon during an investment mission to South Korea in late August and discussed the outlook for the company's Philippine operations.
Around 30 Tier 1 suppliers of Samsung Electro-Mechanics are expected to visit the Philippines in October to conduct due diligence and assess potential local investments.
The prospective companies include suppliers of chemicals used in semiconductor and PCB processing as well as manufacturers of precision industrial components used in electronics production.
The emerging picture therefore consists of three investment tracks: the existing ₱50.7 billion MLCC expansion, the newly disclosed ₱2 billion inductor manufacturing project and a second manufacturing project expected to be larger than the first.
If investments by Samsung Electro-Mechanics' suppliers follow, the Calamba operation could develop into a broader electronics manufacturing and supply-chain hub.
The next key development will be disclosure of the investment size and product scope of the second project, as well as whether the Korean suppliers' October due diligence leads to actual investments.
