[Mir's Global Radar] HD Hyundai Advances 150,000-cbm Ultra-Large Ethane Carrier as Korea-China Gas-Ship Race Intensifies
HD Hyundai is accelerating development of a 150,000-cubic-meter ultra-large ethane carrier, or ULEC, nearly 50% larger than the roughly 100,000-cbm class that has dominated the market.
The move comes as growing U.S. shale-gas production drives greater volumes of ethane toward Asian petrochemical markets, creating demand for larger vessels capable of reducing transportation costs through economies of scale.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, France's GTT and Lloyd's Register recently signed a joint development project agreement at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok to develop and technically assess a 150,000-cbm ULEC.
The new design will incorporate GTT's Mark III Slim cargo-containment technology, with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries seeking to reduce vessel weight while improving performance and economic efficiency.
The project represents a significant scale-up from the 102,000-cbm VLEC development project launched by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and GTT in February.
However, 150,000-cbm ethane carriers themselves are not entirely new.
Eastern Pacific Shipping placed the world's first orders for vessels of this size in 2024. China's Jiangnan Shipyard secured six ships while HD Hyundai Samho won two.
The significance of the latest project therefore lies not in entering the 150,000-cbm market for the first time, but in HD Hyundai's effort to develop a more advanced vessel design as competition intensifies over the next generation of ultra-large gas carriers.
From 102,000 to 150,000 cbm — A 47% Jump in Seven Months
As recently as February, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and GTT were jointly developing a 102,000-cbm VLEC.
That project also centered on GTT's Mark III Slim membrane cargo-containment technology, aiming to optimize hull geometry while increasing cargo capacity and transport efficiency.
The latest project raises the target capacity to 150,000 cbm — roughly 47% larger.
Simply building a bigger vessel, however, is not enough.
Ethane must be transported at extremely low temperatures, meaning larger vessels require careful integration of cargo-containment systems, hull structures, safety measures and operational efficiency.
Under the new project, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries contributes ship-design expertise, GTT provides cargo-containment technology and Lloyd's Register handles classification and technical assurance.
The partners will assess the engineering challenges of scaling capacity to 150,000 cbm, including cargo-system integration, safety and regulatory compliance.
Mark III Slim is central to the design.
Its lighter and more compact configuration gives naval architects greater flexibility in hull optimization. GTT says the technology can increase cargo capacity while also shortening construction time.
The economic logic is straightforward: as ethane trade expands, carrying more cargo on each voyage can reduce transportation costs.
That is driving the race toward the 150,000-cbm ULEC.
China Six, Korea Two — The 150,000-cbm Market Is Already Open
China secured the largest share of the first commercial orders for 150,000-cbm ULECs.
In 2024, Eastern Pacific Shipping ordered eight vessels backed by long-term transportation arrangements with China's Satellite Chemical.
Jiangnan Shipyard, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, secured six vessels.
HD Hyundai Samho won the remaining two.
The two Korean-built ships are reportedly priced at roughly $207 million each and are scheduled for delivery in 2027.
Jiangnan's six vessels are also scheduled for delivery beginning in 2027 and were widely described as the world's first commercial orders for 150,000-cbm ULECs.
Compared with conventional VLECs of around 99,000 cbm, the new vessels represent a dramatic increase in cargo capacity.
Korean shipbuilding, however, has participated in the segment from its earliest commercial stage.
HD Hyundai Samho's two vessels mean that the first eight 150,000-cbm ULECs are being divided between Chinese and Korean yards.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also has substantial experience building conventional VLECs.
The latest project therefore represents an effort to build on that experience and advance the design of the next generation of ultra-large ethane carriers.
U.S. Shale Creates a New Market — Korea and China Face Off Again
The emergence of the 150,000-cbm ethane carrier is closely linked to the U.S. shale-gas revolution.
Ethane is produced during natural-gas processing and is a key feedstock for petrochemical products such as ethylene.
Historically, large-scale seaborne ethane transportation was limited.
That changed as U.S. shale production expanded, creating growing supplies of competitively priced ethane for petrochemical plants in Asia, particularly China.
Longer trade routes strengthen the economics of larger vessels because more cargo can be transported on each voyage.
Lloyd's Register specifically cited expanding ethane trade and growing demand for improved voyage economics as drivers behind the new project.
A 150,000-cbm ULEC can carry roughly 50% more cargo than conventional VLECs of around 100,000 cbm.
That creates another potential battleground between Korean and Chinese shipbuilders.
Jiangnan Shipyard already holds six 150,000-cbm orders.
HD Hyundai Samho is building another two, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is now working with GTT and Lloyd's Register on an advanced 150,000-cbm design.
The competition, however, will not be determined by vessel size alone.
Shipowners will ultimately care about how efficiently the same 150,000 cbm can be transported — including vessel weight, construction time, fuel consumption, reliability and lifecycle costs.
The Korea-China shipbuilding contest that has played out in LNG carriers is therefore beginning to extend into another high-value gas-carrier segment.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' latest ULEC project suggests that the next phase of the competition will increasingly be fought over transportation economics rather than size alone.
