[MIR's Business Made Easy]Techcross Became a Global Leader by Treating the Water Beneath Ships — How Did It Reach 5,000 Vessels?
A fully loaded cargo ship and an empty one have dramatically different weights.
When a large vessel unloads its cargo, it can sit too high in the water, reducing stability. Ships therefore pump seawater into tanks to maintain balance and safe operating conditions.
That water is known as ballast water.
The problem is that seawater taken aboard in Busan, for example, may later be discharged in Europe — together with microorganisms and small marine organisms living in it.
The International Maritime Organization says ballast water can transport thousands of aquatic microbes, plants and animals around the world, potentially introducing invasive species into ecosystems where they do not belong.
Global regulation of that problem created a major environmental equipment industry out of something as ordinary as seawater.
One of the companies that emerged as a global player is Busan-based Techcross.
Techcross surpassed cumulative orders covering 5,000 vessels in 2025. International shipping publication Tanker Operator also reported that the company reached the 5,000-vessel milestone over 19 years.
Data published by the Korean Standards Association put Techcross's overseas market share at 13% in 2023, 15% in 2024 and an estimated 17% in 2025, while identifying it as the world's No. 1 BWMS seller in 2024.
회사가 개발한 ECS(Electro-Cleen System)는 바닷물을 전기분해해 미생물을 제거하는 방식이다.
Why Did the Water Carried by Ships Become an Environmental Problem?
Ballast water can be thought of as a ship's adjustable sandbag.
When cargo is unloaded, seawater is pumped into tanks to add weight and stabilize the vessel. When cargo is loaded again, that water can be discharged.
It is essential for safe navigation, but the water also carries living organisms.
According to the IMO, ballast water can contain bacteria, microbes, small invertebrates, eggs and larvae. If these organisms are released thousands of kilometers away and survive, they can become invasive species and disrupt local ecosystems.
The IMO therefore adopted the Ballast Water Management Convention in 2004, which entered into force in 2017.
Ships engaged in international voyages are required to manage ballast water under vessel-specific plans and meet international standards. The regulatory framework has driven widespread adoption of onboard ballast water treatment systems.
In other words, regulation created an entirely new market.
Techcross moved before that market fully matured.
Its Electro-Cleen System uses electrolysis to disinfect ballast water. According to the Korean Standards Association, the technology received IMO basic approval in 2006 and final approval in 2008.
Just as automobile emissions regulations created markets for catalytic converters and filters, ballast water regulations created a new marine environmental equipment industry.
A 251-Person Company Reaches the World's Oceans
What makes Techcross particularly interesting is the contrast between its corporate size and global reach.
According to Korean Standards Association data, Techcross employs 251 people.
The company generated 174.5 billion won in revenue in 2024, of which 166.6 billion won came from exports. That means exports accounted for roughly 95% of revenue.
Its estimated overseas market share increased from 13% in 2023 to 15% in 2024 and 17% in 2025, although the 2025 figure remains an estimate.
Then there is the 5,000-vessel milestone.
It represents equipment orders covering thousands of ships operating across global maritime trade.
International shipping publication Tanker Operator separately highlighted Techcross's achievement of reaching 5,000 vessels over 19 years.
The technology itself continues to evolve.
Maritime industry publication Riviera reported that Techcross received U.S. Coast Guard type approval for HYCHLOR 2.0, a filterless ballast water management system designed to reduce maintenance problems associated with clogged filters while saving installation space and costs.
Techcross's competitive advantage therefore lies in more than simply manufacturing environmental equipment.
The company anticipated a market that international regulation would eventually create, secured critical technology approvals early and built a global installed base over nearly two decades.
After 5,000 Vessels Comes AI — From Equipment Sales to Ship Management
The ballast water treatment market is entering a new phase.
As implementation of the IMO's D-2 standard matures, the industry's center of gravity is likely to shift over time from initial installations toward maintenance, replacement and operational management.
Techcross is adapting its business model accordingly.
In 2026, the company upgraded its smart platform to strengthen real-time collection and analysis of log data generated by ballast water management systems.
The logic is straightforward.
In the past, selling one system for one ship could largely complete the transaction.
In the future, Techcross can continuously monitor thousands of systems installed around the world, detect abnormal conditions and connect customers with maintenance and replacement services.
Its 5,000-vessel installed and contracted base can therefore become more than a record of past sales — it can serve as the foundation for a recurring service business.
The regulatory framework is also continuing to evolve. At MEPC 84 in May 2026, the IMO approved a comprehensive package of amendments developed from the convention's experience-building phase for consideration for adoption at MEPC 85 in December 2026.
A Korean company that initially grew by selling equipment created by environmental regulation is now attempting to evolve into a company that manages ships through data.
How Techcross converts its 5,000-vessel footprint into its next business model will be the company's next major test.
