As AI Servers Heat Up, Cooling Becomes Critical Infrastructure
LG Electronics' decision to establish a U.S. chiller production base comes as demand for cooling equipment rises rapidly alongside the expansion of AI data centers.
High-performance GPUs used for AI computing consume significantly more electricity and generate considerably more heat than conventional servers. For data center operators, cooling efficiency is therefore becoming as important as computing performance in determining operating costs and system reliability.
Chillers, which produce chilled water used to remove heat from large-scale data centers and industrial facilities, are consequently emerging as a critical component of AI infrastructure.
LG Electronics has recently stepped up its push into the market with the launch of an air-cooled oil-free inverter turbo chiller designed for AI data centers.
The system incorporates LG's proprietary oil-free magnetic bearing technology, which uses electromagnetic force to suspend the compressor shaft, reducing mechanical friction and improving cooling efficiency.
The company has also introduced refrigerant-based free cooling technology that allows refrigerant to circulate naturally when outside temperatures are sufficiently low, reducing the need to operate compressors.
According to LG Electronics, the technology can reduce annual electricity consumption by approximately 30% compared with conventional water-based free cooling systems.
Developed in Korea, Made in America…LG Localizes AI Cooling
The significance of the Virginia investment goes beyond the construction of another manufacturing facility. It marks LG Electronics' move to localize production for the North American AI data center cooling market.
LG has been expanding its portfolio of data center thermal management technologies, including chillers, coolant distribution units (CDUs) and immersion cooling solutions.
At Data Center World Asia 2026 in Singapore, the company also unveiled its “Chip-to-Chiller” strategy, aimed at integrating thermal management from AI chips and servers through cooling infrastructure and overall data center operations.
The new U.S. manufacturing base will allow LG to build a more localized North American value chain spanning product development, manufacturing, supply and after-sales service.
Virginia is also one of the most important data center markets in the United States. As investment in hyperscale and AI data centers accelerates, demand is rising not only for electricity but also for sophisticated cooling infrastructure.
LG plans to supply chillers manufactured at the Virginia plant to data centers as well as other industrial customers across North America.
Don Kwoak, president of LG Electronics North America, said the new plant represents an important step in expanding production capacity for advanced cooling technologies and responding more effectively to rapidly growing customer demand in North America.
Beyond Appliances: LG Expands Its Business Toward AI Infrastructure
LG Electronics' Virginia investment also highlights a broader shift in the company's business structure.
The company is seeking new growth engines beyond its traditional consumer businesses such as televisions and home appliances, with HVAC systems and data center cooling becoming increasingly important parts of its business-to-business portfolio.
AI data centers require far more than servers and semiconductors. They also depend on power grids, transformers, backup power systems, energy storage systems and sophisticated cooling equipment capable of removing the enormous amounts of heat generated by AI computing.
This is why the global AI investment boom is spreading from semiconductors into physical infrastructure such as electricity and cooling systems.
LG is also pursuing a broader “One LG” strategy that can combine LG Electronics' cooling technologies with LG Energy Solution's power solutions and LG CNS' capabilities in data center design, construction and operations.
The Virginia plant is expected to become a key production base for that strategy in North America.
With its latest AI data center cooling technologies now being paired with U.S.-based manufacturing, LG Electronics is positioning itself to capture a larger share of an AI infrastructure market that is rapidly expanding beyond chips and servers into power and thermal management.
