[MIR's Business Made Easy] Why Does an AI Data Center Need 345kV Transformers?…LS Electric Targets the Power Highway

AI data centers are usually discussed in terms of GPUs, particularly the high-performance processors supplied by companies such as Nvidia.

But tens of thousands — or even hundreds of thousands — of GPUs cannot operate on their own.

They require another enormous infrastructure system capable of moving vast amounts of electricity from power generation facilities to data centers reliably and efficiently.

Korean companies are increasingly entering that market.

LS Electric announced on Oct. 1 that it had secured a $133.41 million, or approximately 181.2 billion won, contract to supply 345kV ultra-high-voltage transformers for a hyperscale AI data center project in North America.

The transformers will be supplied sequentially through 2030 to nine substations.

This is not simply a project to construct a single data center building. It involves large-scale AI data centers across North America together with the power generation and transmission infrastructure required to support them.

One number stands out: 345kV.

Electricity used in Korean homes is supplied at 220 volts.

The transmission network feeding a hyperscale AI infrastructure project can operate at 345,000 volts — more than 1,500 times that voltage.

Why does AI require electricity at such enormous voltage?

345kV Is the Highway of Electricity

The easiest way to understand a 345kV transmission network is to think of a highway.

It is difficult to move thousands of cars simultaneously through a narrow neighborhood street. Large volumes of traffic require wide highways.

Electricity works in a similar way.

To move enormous quantities of electricity efficiently over long distances, utilities transmit power at very high voltages.

Higher voltage allows the same amount of power to be transmitted with lower current, reducing losses along the way.

But a data center cannot simply connect its servers directly to a 345kV transmission line.

That is where substations and transformers come in.

They progressively reduce the voltage before electricity enters the data center's distribution network and eventually reaches servers, cooling systems and other equipment.

A transformer therefore acts somewhat like a transfer station along the journey from a power plant to a server.

That also explains the nine substations involved in LS Electric's latest contract.

The figure does not mean a single AI data center requires nine substations. The equipment will be supplied to nine substations associated with a large project being developed across multiple locations in North America.

As gigawatt-scale AI data centers proliferate across North America, demand is increasing not only for ultra-high-voltage transformers but also for switchgear, circuit breakers and equipment across the entire transmission and distribution system.

From 170.3 Billion to 230.9 Billion to 181.2 Billion Won — LS Electric Expands Its Power Territory

The most important aspect of LS Electric's latest transformer deal is not the contract alone.

It is the expanding portion of the AI data center power network that the company is targeting.

In April, LS Electric secured a 170.3 billion won contract to supply switchgear and distribution transformers for hyperscale data centers being built by a major technology company in North America.

At the time, the company said its North American data center orders secured in 2026 had already reached approximately 500 billion won.

That contract later grew.

In August, its value was increased to approximately 230.9 billion won through an amended agreement.

Now LS Electric has added a major 345kV ultra-high-voltage transformer contract.

In simple terms, the company's role is expanding from equipment that distributes electricity closer to the data center toward the ultra-high-voltage infrastructure that brings large volumes of power into the area in the first place.

LS Electric is building a portfolio that spans ultra-high-voltage transformers and gas-insulated switchgear to medium- and low-voltage switchgear and direct-current distribution solutions.

In July, the company also began operating what it described as the world's first factory powered entirely through a direct-current distribution system at its Cheonan facility.

As AI data centers become increasingly power-dense, reducing electricity losses during repeated power conversion becomes more important.

LS Electric is therefore targeting more than individual transformers.

It is positioning itself across the entire electricity pathway — from high-voltage transmission and substations to internal distribution systems and ultimately the server rack.

After GPUs, Electricity Becomes the Next Bottleneck

For much of the AI boom, the most visible bottleneck has been GPUs.

But as GPU supply expands, another constraint becomes increasingly important.

Electricity.

Tens of thousands of high-performance GPUs operating simultaneously consume enormous amounts of power. Cooling systems required to remove the heat generated by those servers add further demand.

As data centers grow, electricity supply becomes more than a building-level issue. It becomes a regional infrastructure challenge involving generation, transmission networks and substations.

LS Electric estimates that the North American data center power infrastructure market will expand from approximately 13 trillion won in 2025 to 56 trillion won by 2035.

That represents average annual growth of roughly 16%.

The boundaries of AI investment are therefore widening.

The chain no longer ends with GPUs, servers and data center buildings.

It extends through power generation, transmission, ultra-high-voltage transformers, substations and distribution systems before electricity finally reaches the servers.

That helps explain why Korean electrical equipment manufacturers are increasingly benefiting from the AI data center investment cycle.

Larger AI models require more computing capacity.

More computing capacity requires larger and more reliable supplies of electricity.

Competition in the AI era is therefore expanding beyond the question of who can secure the most powerful GPUs.

It increasingly includes another question: who can deliver enough electricity to keep those GPUs running?

That is the market LS Electric is targeting with its 345kV transformers.
