[Mir’s Global Radar] Hyundai Wia Expands Slovakia Plant…€31.37 Million Investment, Up to 600 Jobs by 2035

Hyundai Wia is significantly expanding its production base in Slovakia as part of a long-term strategy to strengthen its position in the European automotive market.

Following the recent start of mass production at its new plant in Martin, Slovakia, local government documents show that Hyundai Wia plans to invest a total of €31.37 million in production facilities and a technology center through 2029, while expanding local employment to as many as 600 people by 2035.

In South Korea, Hyundai Wia had already announced the start of production of constant velocity joints (CVJs) and coolant modules at the Slovakia plant, along with plans to expand capacity. However, Slovak government documents reveal a more extensive long-term investment and employment roadmap.

The Slovak government has also approved approximately €8.9 million in investment incentives to support Hyundai Wia’s expansion.

€31.37 Million Investment…Up to 600 Employees by 2035

According to Slovak government documents and local media reports, Hyundai Wia plans to invest approximately €26.77 million in production operations and another €4.6 million in a technology center at its Martin facility by the end of 2029, bringing the total investment to €31.37 million.

The Slovak government has approved approximately €8.9 million in investment support for the project in the form of corporate tax relief.

The company’s long-term employment plan is also more extensive than previously disclosed in South Korea.

Hyundai Wia had announced plans to increase its local workforce from around 98 employees to approximately 410 by 2030.

According to plans disclosed by Slovak labor authorities, however, the facility currently employs around 115 people, with that figure expected to rise to 130–140 by the end of this year. Employment is projected to reach around 400 by 2030 and as many as 600 by 2035.

This indicates that the project is not simply the establishment of another production plant, but a long-term effort to gradually expand Hyundai Wia’s manufacturing and technology footprint in Europe over nearly a decade.

Two More Production Lines to Move to Slovakia

Hyundai Wia is also continuing to relocate production equipment to Slovakia.

According to the Slovak government, the company has already transferred two production lines to its Martin facility and plans to relocate another two lines by the end of this year.

The Martin plant manufactures constant velocity joints, a core automotive component, as well as coolant modules used in thermal management systems for environmentally friendly vehicles.

Its current annual production capacity stands at approximately 800,000 CVJs and 280,000 coolant modules.

Hyundai Wia plans to eventually increase CVJ production capacity by as much as fivefold while adding new products, including HVAC modules.

Components produced at the plant will also be supplied for Kia’s European strategic electric vehicles, including the EV2 and EV4.

Slovakia is one of Europe’s major automotive manufacturing hubs, hosting Kia’s Žilina plant as well as production facilities operated by Volkswagen, Stellantis and Jaguar Land Rover.

Hyundai Wia’s decision to establish its Martin production base therefore aligns with a broader strategy to expand its customer base beyond the Hyundai Motor Group supply chain and deeper into the European automotive industry.

Local reports indicate that the Martin facility is also connected to supply chains serving European automakers beyond Hyundai and Kia.

However, specific products and supply volumes for individual customers have not been officially disclosed.

From Following Hyundai and Kia to Becoming a European Supply Hub

The significance of the investment goes beyond simply adding another overseas Hyundai Wia factory.

As the automotive industry transitions toward electrification, thermal management systems and electrified components are becoming increasingly important compared with the traditional internal combustion engine era.

The coolant modules produced by Hyundai Wia in Slovakia are key components designed to efficiently manage heat generated by electric vehicle batteries, motors and power electronics.

At the same time, the planned major expansion of CVJ production capacity would allow the Martin facility to support internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles alike, strengthening its role as a European automotive component supply base.

As European Union automotive policy increasingly emphasizes local production and resilient supply chains, the ability of component suppliers to manufacture within Europe is becoming directly linked to their competitiveness in securing orders from automakers.

For Hyundai Wia, the Slovakia plant provides a base from which it can respond to Kia’s expanding European EV production while also seeking to broaden its customer base among other European automakers.

That is why the Slovak government’s 2035 outlook is potentially more significant than Hyundai Wia’s previously disclosed 2030 plan.

If a production base that began with fewer than 100 employees ultimately develops into a manufacturing and technology hub employing as many as 600 people, the role of the Martin plant could expand well beyond that of a conventional component factory.

Hyundai Wia’s European strategy is effectively moving from “producing where Hyundai and Kia operate” toward becoming more deeply embedded in Europe’s broader automotive supply chain.
