[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] Beyond Samsung and LG…K-Elec Makes Refrigerators in Kenya with Korean Technology

When people think of Korean home appliances in Africa, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are usually the first names that come to mind. But in Kenya, a different model of Korean technology-based manufacturing is emerging.

Instead of making finished products overseas and exporting them to Africa, K-Elec uses Korean electronic control technology and product design to manufacture televisions and refrigerators locally in Kenya.

The Kenyan government describes K-Elec as a “Korean-Kenyan technology firm,” while KOTRA has introduced the company as a Korean-invested enterprise producing refrigerators with Korean technology in Kenya.

K-Elec officially began operating an electronics manufacturing facility at Sarin Industrial Park in Syokimau, near Nairobi, in December 2025.

According to Kenyan media reports, the plant has the capacity to produce 300 televisions and 300 refrigerators per day — up to 600 units in total.

Starting with televisions and refrigerators, K-Elec is expanding its lineup to include mini refrigerators and freezers, with plans to add washing machines, microwave ovens and air fryers.

The company is also looking beyond Kenya, targeting neighboring East African markets including Tanzania and Uganda.

From Exporting Finished Products to Manufacturing in Kenya

One of the most notable aspects of K-Elec’s business model is its local manufacturing strategy.

Korean appliance companies have traditionally approached African markets primarily by selling products manufactured in Korea or at large overseas production bases through local distribution networks.

K-Elec takes a different approach by operating a manufacturing base in Kenya and producing televisions and refrigerators locally.

Kenyan newspaper The Standard reported that the design and core technology behind K-Elec products come from Korea.

The Kenyan government has also highlighted the factory not simply as the arrival of another foreign appliance brand, but as part of the country’s push to strengthen domestic manufacturing and facilitate technology transfer.

The facility is expected to create around 400 local jobs. Transferring Korean technological and quality-control expertise to Kenyan technicians is also part of the project.

In that sense, K-Elec’s strategy aligns with Kenya’s broader ambition to move from being primarily a consumer of imported electronics toward becoming a producer.

K-Elec currently operates brand shops in Nairobi’s central business district and Syokimau and uses local e-commerce platforms including Jumia and Kilimall as sales channels.

The ‘Brain’ of the Refrigerator Comes from Korean SME Technology

One of K-Elec’s notable links to Korea is its electronic control technology.

K-Elec identifies Korean electronics and PCB specialist Neurosys as a key research and development partner.

According to K-Elec, major PCBs and electronic control technologies used in its refrigerators and televisions are jointly developed and tested with Neurosys’ R&D operations in Korea.

Founded in 2000, Neurosys is a Korean electronic components manufacturer with annual revenue in the tens of billions of won, according to publicly available corporate information.

This creates a business structure different from that of major Korean appliance makers exporting finished products to Africa: technology from a Korean SME is being incorporated into products manufactured locally in Kenya.

However, publicly available information does not establish an equity relationship between K-Elec and Neurosys. What can currently be confirmed is that K-Elec identifies Neurosys as its Korean R&D partner.

K-Elec’s ownership structure also cannot be characterized conclusively as wholly Korean based on currently available information.

Kenya’s investment authorities describe K-Elec as a “Korean-Kenyan technology firm,” while Kenyan government materials identify Nam Kyo Yung as the company’s founder and CEO.

It is therefore more accurate to view K-Elec as a Korea-Kenya collaborative manufacturing business combining Korean technology and management with a local Kenyan operating base.

K-Elec

From Kenya to East Africa…An Experiment in Locally Made ‘K-Appliances’

K-Elec’s ambitions extend beyond Kenya’s domestic market.

The company plans to use Kenya as a production base to expand sales into neighboring East African countries such as Tanzania and Uganda.

In Africa’s appliance market, competitiveness depends not only on price but also on transportation costs, tariffs, products suited to local power conditions and reliable after-sales service.

Local manufacturing can reduce the burden of transporting finished appliances over long distances while allowing manufacturers to respond more closely to local demand.

For Kenya, replacing some imports with domestic manufacturing can also generate employment, transfer technology and strengthen the country’s industrial base.

That is what makes the K-Elec case noteworthy.

The expansion of Korean companies in Africa does not necessarily have to take the form of finished-product exports or massive factories operated by conglomerates such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

Another model is emerging: taking the electronic control technology and product-development capabilities of Korean SMEs to Africa, manufacturing products locally, employing local workers and eventually supplying neighboring countries.

K-Elec’s production and sales volumes remain small compared with those of global appliance giants. But whether this experiment that began in Kenya can expand into Tanzania, Uganda and the wider East African market will be worth watching.

It represents a shift from “appliances made in Korea and sold in Africa” toward “appliances made in Africa with Korean technology.”
