[Mir's Global Radar] South Korea's Vidaus Joins Planned R$16 Million Biotech Factory Project in Brazil
Joint venture targets 350 direct and indirect jobs over three years
Brazilian native plants to support K-beauty ingredient development as industry talks continue
South Korean biotechnology and cosmetics company Vidaus is pursuing expansion into Brazil's biotechnology market in partnership with local businesses. The company has been identified as a participant in a proposed biotechnology manufacturing and research facility in Alagoinhas, Bahia, involving planned investment of 16 million Brazilian reais over three years. The project aims to combine South Korean cosmetics technology with Brazil's rich botanical resources to develop functional cosmetic ingredients and biotechnology materials.
According to the Alagoinhas municipal government and Brazilian local media, Biofor Indústria Biotecnológica, an initiative involving Vidaus and Brazilian companies Cicatribio and Z Future, signed a letter of intent with the municipality on May 28 to establish a biotechnology manufacturing and research facility.
The municipality announced a total planned investment of R$16 million and a target of 350 direct and indirect jobs over three years. The figure represents the proposed overall project investment, not a commitment by Vidaus to finance the entire amount. Individual investment contributions and the commencement of factory construction have yet to be confirmed.
Factory Agreement Signed with Brazilian Municipality, Targeting 350 Jobs
The Alagoinhas municipal government announced that Mayor Gustavo Carmo and Biofor executives signed a letter of intent on May 28 for the establishment of a biotechnology facility.
The project centers on building manufacturing and research facilities in Bahia, northeastern Brazil. It aims to research and produce cosmetic ingredients and biotechnology materials, while exploring technologies with potential applications in healthcare.
The municipality said it would provide land for the factory and offer tax incentives available under local law. The agreement also includes provisions to allocate 80% of the new jobs to Alagoinhas residents and 3% to first-time job seekers.
Brazilian local outlet Política ao Ponto reported that the proposed factory site covers approximately 20,000 square meters.
The initiative is notable as an effort by a South Korean company to commercialize biotechnology through partnerships with Brazilian businesses. However, signing a letter of intent does not mean construction has been completed or production has begun.
Brazilian Native Plants to Supply Ingredients for K-Beauty Products
Another distinctive feature of the project is its plan to connect Brazil's native botanical resources with South Korea's cosmetics industry.
According to Biofor's official website, the company is developing functional ingredients using plants from Brazil's Caatinga biome. The Caatinga is a semi-arid ecosystem in northeastern Brazil known for its diverse native plant resources.
The company identifies four target plants: mangaba, aroeira, juazeiro and wild passion fruit, locally known as maracujá do mato.
Biofor plans to standardize extracts from these plants and develop three types of cosmetic formulations: moisturizers, antioxidant serums and haircare products. The commercialization strategy includes analyzing the composition and quality of extracts and taking Brazilian and South Korean regulatory requirements into account.
Vidaus is identified on Biofor's website as a strategic international partner. Biofor says the two companies intend to co-develop products targeting the K-beauty market and pursue expansion into Asian markets.
This approach differs from the traditional model of exporting finished South Korean cosmetics to Brazil. Instead, it combines locally sourced Brazilian botanical ingredients with South Korean product-development capabilities to target consumers in both countries.
Company Registered in May, Follow-Up Talks Held in August; Construction Still Unconfirmed
Discussions surrounding Biofor's project continued among local industry stakeholders after the May investment announcement.
According to Brazilian business registration records, Biofor Indústria Biotecnológica Ltda was incorporated on May 11. Its registration number is 66.729.431/0001-00, and it is based in Alagoinhas, Bahia. The company's registration status is listed as active.
Its registered share capital is R$10,000. This is distinct from the R$16 million investment plan announced by the municipality and does not establish that the planned capital expenditure has been made.
Further discussions were reported in August. On August 24, Brazilian regional outlet Política ao Ponto reported that the mayor of Alagoinhas had met with representatives of the Bahia State Federation of Industries, the state-linked healthcare organization Bahiafarma, and the cosmetics industry to discuss expanding biotechnology-related activities.
The report also described business discussions involving Biofor and referred to technology-transfer cooperation between Brazil and South Korea.
The company's registration and subsequent meetings indicate that discussions have continued beyond the initial announcement. Nevertheless, available public documents do not establish whether the proposed site has been formally handed over, construction or environmental permits have been issued, building work has started, or investment funds have been disbursed.
The project illustrates how a South Korean small or medium-sized biotechnology company is seeking opportunities abroad by combining local Brazilian resources with research and production capabilities. Its ultimate commercial significance will depend on whether the proposed factory is built and the planned products reach the market.
