[Mir's Business Made Simple] Korean Suppliers Win Billions in Orders as U.S. AI Data Centers Turn to On-Site Power
The way U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) data centers secure electricity is changing. Rather than waiting for utilities to expand transmission networks, developers are increasingly considering power generation facilities at or near their data centers. Competition in AI infrastructure is extending beyond semiconductors and servers to the ability to secure reliable electricity.
This shift is creating new business opportunities for South Korean companies. Seojin System, LS Electric and LS Materials have each secured substantial supply contracts involving Bloom Energy, a U.S. fuel-cell power solutions company. Their separate agreements total approximately 360 billion won, covering fuel-cell components, electrical distribution equipment and devices that manage short-term power fluctuations.
However, rising demand for AI data centers does not guarantee equal benefits for every supplier. The financial impact depends on each company's position in the supply chain, when contracted orders become recognized revenue, and how emerging power technologies affect demand for existing equipment. The central question is whether the expansion of the U.S. AI power market can become a sustainable growth engine for Korean suppliers.
Why AI Data Centers Are Turning to On-Site Power Instead of Waiting for the Grid
The electricity shortage facing U.S. AI data centers is not simply a lack of power plants. Electricity generated at power stations must travel through transmission lines, substations and distribution equipment before reaching a data center. Delays in grid connections can prevent operators from running servers on schedule, even after construction is completed.
AI data centers require enormous amounts of reliable electricity. Delayed power availability can leave expensive servers and semiconductor equipment idle, postponing the launch of commercial services. For developers, the timing of electricity supply has therefore become a critical factor affecting project profitability.
This is why on-site generation, in which power facilities are installed at or near data centers, is gaining attention. According to a June 2026 survey released by Bloom Energy, 61% of surveyed developers said they planned to generate their own electricity if the grid could not meet their needs. The figure reflects stated intentions rather than the share of facilities already using on-site generation.
Bloom Energy's core technology is the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which converts chemical energy from fuel into electricity. The systems can use fuels such as natural gas and can be deployed close to where electricity is consumed.
The important business implication is that a change in power generation also changes where investment money flows.
On-site generation requires not only generating equipment but also components, electrical distribution systems and devices that manage power fluctuations. This is how America's competition to secure electricity for AI infrastructure is creating opportunities for Korean component and equipment suppliers.
Three Korean Suppliers Secure About 360 Billion Won in Orders, but Their Revenue Models Differ
The changing U.S. AI power market is reflected in recent supply agreements involving three South Korean companies.
On October 12, Seojin System disclosed a contract worth approximately 106.4 billion won to supply SOFC modules and components to Bloom Energy. The agreement represents 9.98% of the company's 2025 consolidated revenue and runs through December 23, 2027.
According to the disclosure, the products will be manufactured through overseas operations and delivered at a factory in Vietnam. Payment is due within 45 days of invoicing, with no advance payment.
Seojin System does not generate revenue by operating power plants or selling electricity. Instead, it manufactures and supplies modules and components used in Bloom Energy's power systems. As U.S. demand for generating equipment expands, orders may also increase at the Korean company's overseas production facilities.
LS Electric announced a contract worth approximately 185.3 billion won on October 13 to supply switchgear and distribution transformers to Bloom Energy. The equipment is intended for a fuel-cell-based on-site power generation project at a major technology company's data center in Pennsylvania.
LS Electric plans to deliver 38-kilovolt high-voltage switchgear and distribution transformers between April and July 2027. According to the company, cumulative orders involving Bloom Energy have exceeded $500 million since April 2025.
Even when electricity is generated on-site, it must be distributed to data center equipment at appropriate voltage levels. LS Electric earns revenue by supplying the equipment needed for this process rather than by operating the generating facilities.
LS Materials also announced a contract on October 13 to supply approximately $51.5 million, or about 69 billion won, worth of ultracapacitors. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in April 2027 and continue for approximately one year. The contract value is about 2.4 times the company's 2025 standalone revenue.
Ultracapacitors can store and release electricity rapidly, helping manage short-term fluctuations in power systems.
Together, the three agreements amount to approximately 360.7 billion won. However, this is a simple sum of separate contracts with different terms and delivery schedules. It does not establish that all three companies are supplying the same data center, nor does it mean the full amount will be recognized as revenue this year.
Their common connection is Bloom Energy, but their positions in the value chain differ. Seojin System supplies generating-system components, LS Electric provides electrical distribution equipment, and LS Materials supplies power-stabilization devices.
Orders Are Not Profits: Changes in Power Architecture Could Reshape the Winners
Growth in the U.S. AI data center power market is creating new opportunities for Korean suppliers. However, large contract values do not automatically guarantee strong financial results.
Orders and recognized revenue are different. Even after a supply agreement is signed, revenue may be recorded over multiple delivery periods. Profitability also depends on raw-material prices, production costs, exchange rates and payment terms.
For Seojin System, its Vietnam-based production and delivery arrangements, together with the absence of advance payments, deserve attention. LS Electric must meet its scheduled equipment deliveries, while LS Materials needs to demonstrate that it can manufacture and deliver the contracted volume reliably.
Changes in power technology present another variable.
Conventional data centers rely extensively on alternating-current distribution and transformers. However, rising AI server power requirements are encouraging interest in direct-current power architectures.
In a report released in September, Bloom Energy argued that its 800-volt DC-based fuel-cell power solution could eliminate certain transformation and conversion stages. Based on the company's own model, a 1-gigawatt AI data center could reduce non-compute capital expenditure by 27%. The estimate reflects the company's assumptions and comparisons rather than independently demonstrated savings across all operating data centers.
These developments could have mixed implications for electrical equipment suppliers.
More on-site generation may increase demand for fuel-cell components and power-control equipment. At the same time, wider adoption of DC architectures could change the configuration and quantity of certain transformers and conversion devices traditionally used in AC systems. A growing overall market does not necessarily mean every equipment category will expand at the same rate.
On-site generation also does not eliminate the need for conventional grids. Developers must consider reliability, backup power, fuel availability and operating costs when designing their electricity
