The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature went to Canadian writer Anne Carson. One of her famous works is Autobiography of Red.
1. The Wounds We Hide
Sometimes, the deepest wounds are the ones other people cannot see.
In Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red, Geryon is a young boy with red skin and wings.
He feels different from other people, and he struggles to understand himself.
As a child, Geryon suffers sexual abuse from his older brother.
He begins to create an autobiography to record the inner experiences that he cannot easily share with others.
From a psychiatric perspective, this act can be understood as an attempt to express painful experiences through creative work.
Trauma can affect trust, self-esteem, and the feeling of being safe.
Geryon’s story reminds us that we should not judge a person only by what we see on the outside.
2. Love, Loss, and the Pain of Memory
Love can give us hope, but the loss of love can leave deep emotional pain.
At the age of fourteen, Geryon falls in love with Herakles, a sixteen-year-old boy.
They share a close relationship, but they do not understand love in the same way.
Herakles eventually ends the relationship, leaving Geryon heartbroken.
After the breakup, Geryon enters what the novel describes as a blue period.
During this period, he takes a long-exposure photograph of a fly drowning in a bucket of water.
This image can be read as a symbol of helplessness, loneliness, and emotional suffering.
Years later, when Geryon meets Herakles again in Buenos Aires, his old feelings return.
Yet, during their later journey, Geryon begins to understand that the person he loved as a teenager is no longer the same person he knows now.
This is an important lesson in emotional healing: our memories may remain powerful even when our relationships have changed.
3. Seeing Ourselves in a New Way
Healing often begins when someone sees us without shame or rejection.
In Peru, Ancash discovers Geryon’s hidden wings and treats them with tenderness.
Instead of seeing the wings as something ugly, Ancash shares a legend about people who enter a volcano and return with wings.
For Geryon, this experience offers a different way to understand the part of himself he has tried to hide.
Near the end of the novel, Geryon flies over a volcano while recording its sounds.
His wings become more than a sign of difference; they also suggest freedom, courage, and self-acceptance.
His story does not erase his painful past, but it shows that his past does not have to define his entire future.
Conclusion: Healing Without Borders
As mental health professionals, we must listen to people without judgment and respect their personal stories.
We should ask not only what is wrong, but also what has happened and what kind of support may help.
Geryon teaches us that a person is much more than their trauma, their heartbreak, or the differences that make them feel alone.
Healing does not mean forgetting the past; it means finding the freedom to live beyond it.
In global mental health, our shared mission is to help every person find dignity, connection, and hope, beyond borders and cultures.
