[Mir’s Easy Business] The Power of Samsung’s ‘Global Smartphone Factory’ in Vietnam…Nearly KRW 50 Trillion in Revenue in Just Six Months

Four major Vietnamese manufacturing subsidiaries generate $35.2 billion in first-half revenue, up 21%

Thai Nguyen-based SEVT alone posts $16.2 billion as a key pillar of Samsung’s smartphone production

Vietnam’s manufacturing ecosystem retains its importance despite production diversification into India and elsewhere

Samsung Electronics’ manufacturing ecosystem in Vietnam, built up over more than a decade, is once again demonstrating its strength. The company’s four major Vietnamese manufacturing subsidiaries generated $35.2 billion, or roughly KRW 49 trillion, in revenue in the first half of this year alone — an amount comparable to the annual sales of a major Korean corporation.

According to reports from Vietnam and Samsung Electronics’ financial data, combined first-half revenue from the four subsidiaries increased 21% year on year to approximately $35.2 billion. Their combined net profit rose 28% to $2.3 billion. The first-half results themselves were also reported by a Korean media outlet on Aug. 26.

The numbers, however, reveal something more significant: the continuing importance of Vietnam in Samsung Electronics’ global manufacturing strategy. Even as Samsung diversifies production into India and other markets, Vietnam remains a critical manufacturing hub supported by a vast production ecosystem spanning smartphones, displays and home appliances.

Thai Nguyen Generates $16.2 Billion Alone…The Heart of Samsung’s Smartphone Production

At the center of Samsung’s Vietnamese manufacturing network is Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen, or SEVT, located in northern Thai Nguyen Province.

SEVT generated approximately $16.2 billion in revenue during the first half of this year, up 22.4% year on year, while net profit increased 33.4% to around $1.08 billion. That means SEVT alone accounted for roughly 46% of the combined revenue of Samsung’s four major Vietnamese manufacturing subsidiaries.

SEVT is one of Samsung Electronics’ key overseas production bases for smartphones and telecommunications equipment. In the first quarter alone, its revenue rose 20.3% year on year to $8.6 billion. Combined revenue from Samsung’s four major Vietnamese subsidiaries reached $17.72 billion during the quarter, equivalent to roughly 20% of Samsung Electronics’ global consolidated revenue.

Vietnam’s importance is also evident in smartphone production. Samsung operates SEV in Bac Ninh and SEVT in Thai Nguyen as its major smartphone manufacturing bases, with the two plants reportedly accounting for more than half of the company’s total smartphone production.

The history of the Bac Ninh plant is equally symbolic. Samsung began producing mobile phones there in 2009, and in April 2025 the plant celebrated production of its 900 millionth handset. The milestone device was a Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Calling Vietnam Samsung’s “global smartphone factory,” therefore, is hardly an exaggeration.

$23.2 Billion Invested Over 18 Years…From Manufacturing to R&D

Vietnam’s competitiveness for Samsung is no longer simply about being a low-cost manufacturing base.

Since entering the country, Samsung Electronics has established smartphone, display and home-appliance production facilities while building a broader ecosystem encompassing suppliers, logistics, human resources and research and development.

According to local reports earlier this year, Samsung’s cumulative investment in Vietnam has reached $23.2 billion. The company operates six manufacturing facilities as well as an R&D center and sales operations in the country.

Samsung is also expanding Vietnam’s role from manufacturing into research and development. Its large R&D center in Hanoi has broadened its focus into areas including AI and software.

Its energy strategy is evolving as well. This year Samsung Electronics Vietnam became the first company in the country to purchase renewable electricity through Vietnam’s Direct Power Purchase Agreement, or DPPA, mechanism. The move indicates that Samsung is seeking to incorporate carbon reduction, increasingly required across global supply chains, into the competitiveness of its Vietnamese manufacturing operations.

Vietnam, in other words, is evolving from a low-cost assembly base into a broader manufacturing platform combining production, suppliers, talent and R&D.

Even as India Grows, Vietnam Remains Indispensable…Beyond ‘China+1’

Samsung Electronics is gradually diversifying its global production network rather than concentrating manufacturing in a single location. The importance of local production in major markets such as India is growing as the company responds to geopolitical risks, tariffs and global supply-chain restructuring.

That does not necessarily mean Vietnam’s role will diminish anytime soon.

Building another smartphone factory in a different country is fundamentally different from relocating a manufacturing ecosystem developed over more than a decade. Such an ecosystem encompasses not only final assembly plants but also displays and components, suppliers, skilled workers, logistics networks and R&D capabilities.

Vietnam’s importance can also be seen in previous results. In 2022, Samsung’s four Vietnamese subsidiaries generated approximately $71 billion in annual revenue and $4.6 billion in profit. SEVT alone accounted for $28 billion in revenue.

Now, in the first half of 2026, the four operations have again generated $35.2 billion.
Samsung may be diversifying its global manufacturing footprint, but Vietnam has arguably moved beyond its original role as a simple “China+1” production base. It has become one of the pillars supporting Samsung’s global manufacturing network across smartphones, displays and home appliances.

$35.2 billion in six months.

The figure represents more than another strong set of results from Samsung’s Vietnamese subsidiaries. It demonstrates the strength of a Vietnamese manufacturing ecosystem Samsung has spent more than a decade building.
