[미디어펜=편집국] LS그룹 계열 가온전선이 필리핀에서 새로운 사업 기회를 모색하고 있다. 필리핀 정부가 한국 기업 유치에 적극적으로 나선 가운데 현지 경제특구청이 가온전선을 직접 투자유치 대상으로 접촉한 것으로 확인됐다.

5일 필리핀 경제특구청(PEZA) 등에 따르면 PEZA 투자유치단은 지난달 25~27일 한국을 방문해 가온전선 관계자들과 만나 필리핀 내 사업 및 투자 기회를 논의했다.

PEZA는 가온전선을 한국에서 가장 오래된 전선 제조업체로 소개하면서 회사가 필리핀에서 사업 기회를 검토하고 있다고 밝혔다.

다만 현재 단계에서 가온전선의 필리핀 공장 건설이나 구체적인 투자 규모가 확정된 것은 아니다. 필리핀 정부가 가온전선을 투자유치 후보로 직접 접촉했고 회사가 현지 사업 가능성을 살펴보고 있다는 단계다.

가온전선이 실제 투자를 결정할 경우 미국과 싱가포르 등에서 확대하고 있는 해외 전력 인프라 사업의 무게중심이 동남아시아로 한층 넓어질 수 있다는 점에서 주목된다.

GAON CABLE, an LS Group affiliate, is exploring new business opportunities in the Philippines as the Southeast Asian country steps up efforts to attract Korean investment.

According to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), its investment promotion delegation met with representatives of GAON CABLE during a visit to South Korea from August 25 to 27 to discuss potential business and investment opportunities in the Philippines.

PEZA described GAON CABLE as South Korea's oldest cable manufacturer and said the company is assessing opportunities in the Philippine market.

However, no investment or factory construction plan has been finalized. At this stage, the development represents an investment-promotion contact by the Philippine government and GAON CABLE's preliminary assessment of potential opportunities.

이번 움직임은 필리핀 정부의 적극적인 한국 기업 투자유치 과정에서 포착됐다.

PEZA는 한국 투자유치 활동을 통해 전자·반도체뿐 아니라 전력 인프라와 첨단 제조업 분야의 한국 기업들을 필리핀 경제특구로 끌어들이는 작업을 진행하고 있다.

가온전선은 전력케이블과 통신케이블 등을 생산하는 국내 대표 전선업체다. 1947년 설립된 국제전선이 모태로, 현재 LS그룹 계열사다.

특히 최근에는 해외 전력 인프라 시장 공략을 강화하고 있다. AI 데이터센터 확대와 전력망 투자 증가로 글로벌 전선 수요가 늘면서 북미와 아시아 시장이 새로운 성장축으로 부상하고 있다.

이런 상황에서 필리핀 정부가 가온전선을 직접 투자유치 대상 가운데 하나로 공개한 것은 가온전선의 해외 사업 확장 가능성을 보여주는 새로운 신호다.

필리핀 역시 전력 수요 증가와 제조업 투자 확대에 맞춰 송배전망을 비롯한 전력 인프라 투자가 필요한 시장이다. 가온전선 입장에서는 향후 현지 시장 진출 여부를 검토할 유인이 있는 셈이다.

PEZA has been seeking Korean investment not only in electronics and semiconductors but also in advanced manufacturing and infrastructure-related industries.

GAON CABLE, whose history dates back to 1947, manufactures power and telecommunications cables and is part of South Korea's LS Group.

The company has recently been expanding its overseas power infrastructure business as surging investment in AI data centers and electricity grids drives global demand for cables.

PEZA's decision to publicly identify GAON CABLE as one of the Korean companies it approached therefore provides a new indication of the company's potential overseas expansion.

특히 미국에서는 AI 데이터센터와 대규모 산업시설의 전력 수요 증가에 대응해 전력케이블과 버스덕트 등 고부가 전력 인프라 시장을 공략하고 있다.

동남아에서도 성과가 나타나고 있다.

가온전선은 최근 싱가포르 육상교통청(LTA)이 추진하는 철도 인프라 사업과 관련해 약 600억원 규모의 배전케이블 공급계약을 확보하며 현지 전력 인프라 시장에서 존재감을 확대했다.

필리핀 진출 가능성이 주목되는 이유도 여기에 있다.

싱가포르에서 철도 전력망 공급 경험을 쌓고 필리핀까지 사업영역을 넓힐 경우 가온전선은 동남아 전력 인프라 시장에서 새로운 성장축을 확보할 수 있다.

특히 필리핀은 경제성장과 데이터센터·제조업 투자 확대에 따라 안정적인 전력 공급을 위한 송배전 인프라 확충 필요성이 커지고 있다.

In the United States, the company is targeting the high-value power infrastructure market, including cables and busduct systems, amid rapid growth in electricity demand from AI data centers and large industrial facilities.

The company has also strengthened its presence in Southeast Asia. It recently secured a contract worth approximately 60 billion won to supply distribution cables for rail infrastructure in Singapore.

A potential move into the Philippines could therefore extend GAON CABLE's Southeast Asian growth strategy beyond Singapore and provide another foothold in the region's expanding power infrastructure market.

다만 이번 PEZA와의 접촉을 가온전선의 필리핀 투자 결정으로 해석해서는 안 된다.

현재 확인된 것은 PEZA가 가온전선을 직접 투자유치 대상으로 접촉했고 양측이 필리핀 사업·투자 기회를 논의했다는 사실이다. 구체적인 투자금액이나 공장 위치, 생산품목, 투자 일정 등은 공개되지 않았다.

따라서 향후 관전 포인트는 가온전선이 실제 사업성 검토를 거쳐 필리핀 투자를 구체화하느냐다.

이번 움직임은 최근 PEZA가 한국 제조업 공급망을 대상으로 투자유치 활동을 강화하고 있다는 점에서도 눈길을 끈다. 삼성전기의 필리핀 생산기반 확대를 계기로 한국 전자·부품·소재기업들을 추가로 유치하려는 움직임이 나타나는 가운데 전력 인프라 업체까지 투자유치 범위가 넓어지고 있다.

가온전선이 실제 투자에 나선다면 LS그룹의 글로벌 전력 인프라 확장과 맞물려 필리핀이 새로운 동남아 생산·사업 거점으로 부상할 가능성도 있다.

하지만 아직 첫 단추를 끼운 단계다. PEZA와의 접촉이 실제 투자로 이어지는지, 투자 방식이 현지 생산인지 판매·사업거점 구축인지가 다음 확인 포인트다.
