[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] Why Samsung Put $1 Billion Into Power and Data Center Infrastructure — Not an AI Company
Samsung has committed $1 billion to a U.S. infrastructure company that builds data centers, power generation facilities and transmission infrastructure rather than to an artificial intelligence company itself.
What makes the investment particularly noteworthy is that Samsung Electronics is not acting alone. Six Samsung affiliates — Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance — are participating together.
Why would Samsung prepare for the AI era by investing at the group level in a company focused on power and data center infrastructure rather than an AI model developer or software company?
The answer lies in a fundamental shift in the bottlenecks facing the AI industry.
If the first battle of the AI boom was about securing the most powerful chips, the next is increasingly about who can secure the enormous data centers, electricity, cooling systems and transmission infrastructure needed to operate hundreds of thousands of those chips.
Helix Digital Infrastructure, the U.S. company receiving Samsung’s investment, was created to address precisely that challenge.
The six Samsung affiliates are investing a combined $1 billion in Helix, which was established by global investment firm KKR. Samsung Electronics is committing $500 million, while Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance will collectively provide the remaining $500 million.
Launched in June, Helix counts KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, NVIDIA and U.S. power company Vistra among its founding investors. Samsung’s investment brings the platform’s total long-term capital commitments to more than $11 billion.
Helix is led by co-founder and CEO Adam Selipsky, the former chief executive of Amazon Web Services.
AI Factories Need Power Too — What Exactly Is Helix?
The easiest way to understand Helix is to think of an AI data center as a gigantic factory.
A traditional factory requires land, buildings, electricity and production equipment. An AI factory is not fundamentally different.
GPUs alone cannot run an AI service.
Operators need enormous data centers capable of housing tens or even hundreds of thousands of GPUs, continuous power to operate them around the clock, cooling systems to remove the immense heat generated by servers, and high-capacity fiber networks to move huge volumes of data.
The problem is that securing each component separately can take years.
Helix aims to bring them together.
Its model integrates hyperscale data center development and operations with power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure and fiber connectivity.
Electricity is particularly important.
AI data centers consume enormous amounts of power, while constructing new generation capacity and securing grid connections can take years.
That is why Vistra, one of America’s major power companies, joined Helix as both a founding investor and its preferred power provider.
Rather than building an AI data center first and searching for electricity afterward, the concept is to develop the data center, power supply and grid infrastructure together from the outset.
GPUaaS(GPU as a Service)
NVIDIA Brings the Brains, Vistra the Power — What Does Samsung Bring?
The composition of Helix’s investor group helps explain why Samsung is committing $1 billion.
KKR brings capital and global infrastructure investment expertise.
NVIDIA provides the AI computing dimension. As a strategic partner, it is supporting the development of AI factory infrastructure aligned with its DSX platform.
Vistra brings power.
Samsung adds another layer to the equation.
Samsung Electronics has semiconductor capabilities spanning memory and system chips that are critical to AI data center infrastructure.
Through FläktGroup, Samsung also has exposure to data center cooling technologies ranging from air cooling systems to coolant distribution units used in liquid-cooling infrastructure.
Samsung C&T’s construction business has capabilities in engineering, procurement and construction for data centers and power plants.
Samsung SDS designs, builds and operates data centers while expanding its GPU-as-a-Service business.
Samsung SDI has battery technologies applicable to uninterruptible power supply systems and battery backup units that help keep servers operating during power disruptions.
The participation of Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance adds a financial dimension.
AI data centers, power plants and transmission infrastructure are long-lived assets requiring enormous pools of patient capital. Insurance companies are among the institutional investors capable of financing such infrastructure over long periods.
Viewed through the Helix platform, Samsung’s businesses can therefore be connected along a single value chain:
Semiconductors → cooling → data center construction → data center operations → batteries → finance.
One distinction, however, is critical.
No specific supply contract has been announced requiring Helix to purchase Samsung Electronics chips, FläktGroup cooling equipment or Samsung SDI batteries, nor has Helix announced an EPC award to Samsung C&T.
At this stage, the investment should be understood as creating a platform for potential cooperation across the AI infrastructure ecosystem rather than as a confirmed procurement agreement.
Selling GPUs Is No Longer Enough — Samsung Targets the AI Industrial Ecosystem
AI is rapidly evolving into a massive infrastructure industry.
During the early phase of the generative AI boom, attention centered on semiconductors such as GPUs and high-bandwidth memory.
But even the most advanced GPUs are useless without electricity.
Trillion-dollar AI investment plans can stall if companies cannot secure suitable data center sites or timely grid connections. Cooling technology is also becoming increasingly critical as the power density of AI computing systems rises.
That is why Helix was designed from the beginning to invest not only in data centers but also in power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure and fiber networks.
Global capital increasingly sees AI infrastructure itself as a major new asset class.
Samsung is moving in the same direction.
That helps explain why the investment involves not only Samsung Electronics but also Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI and the group’s financial affiliates.
In the AI era, competitiveness will not be determined by semiconductors alone.
If the first AI battle was about who could build or secure the best chips, the second is increasingly about who can secure the factories and electricity needed to run them.
Samsung’s $1 billion investment in Helix can be viewed as a move to position the group for that second battle.
