[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] K-Beauty Takes 9 of Top 10 U.S. TikTok Skincare Spots…Korea Wins as the ‘Cosmetics Shelf’ Goes Digital
The “shelf” where American consumers discover cosmetics is changing.
In the past, securing prominent shelf space at retailers such as Sephora or Ulta Beauty was crucial. Today, how frequently a product appears on a consumer’s TikTok feed can have a major influence on purchasing decisions.
K-beauty is emerging as a major beneficiary of this shift.
According to KBeauty TMI, which compiled estimated U.S. TikTok Shop skincare rankings for week 40 of 2026 using data from e-commerce analytics platform Kalodata, nine of the top 10 products were from Korean brands.
At least 58 of the 98 products included in the ranking were K-beauty items.
Four Medicube products and three Dr. Melaxin products appeared in the top 10, while a product from Sungboon Editor ranked first.
The phenomenon is not limited to a single week.
Separate e-commerce analytics data showed that a Medicube product ranked No. 1 by weekly gross merchandise value across all products on TikTok Shop in the United States for two consecutive weeks in September.
The traditional formula for entering the U.S. beauty market is changing.
Historically, securing physical shelf space at major retailers was a key competitive advantage for cosmetics brands.
On TikTok Shop, however, videos effectively become stores and algorithms determine the digital shelf. Consumers can discover a product in a video and purchase it without leaving the platform.
This changing retail environment is creating new opportunities for Korean beauty companies accustomed to rapid product development and social-media-driven marketing.
Nine of Top 10 Are K-Beauty Products, Dominating the Screen
K-beauty’s presence on TikTok Shop in the United States is now broad enough that it cannot be explained by the success of a single brand.
Among the top 10 products in the estimated skincare sales ranking for week 40, tarte was the only U.S. brand.
The remaining positions were occupied by Korean brands including Sungboon Editor, Medicube and Dr. Melaxin.
Medicube placed four products in the top 10 and six in the top 20.
Dr. Melaxin had three products in the top 10.
Of the 98 products included in the broader ranking, at least 58 were identified as Korean. Because products whose brand origins could not be clearly verified were excluded from the K-beauty count, the actual number could be higher.
Separate data points in the same direction.
According to U.S. e-commerce analytics firm Z Media, a Medicube product generated approximately $890,000 in GMV and sold more than 29,000 units in the week ending September 20, ranking first among all products on TikTok Shop in the United States.
The same product remained No. 1 the following week, generating about $1.08 million in GMV on sales of roughly 31,800 units.
Medicube as a brand generated approximately $2.59 million in weekly GMV, ranking second among all brands on the U.S. platform.
Dr. Melaxin also entered the overall brand top 10 with approximately $1.08 million.
Cumulative sales figures displayed on official TikTok Shop storefronts are also substantial.
Medicube’s U.S. store shows roughly 9.7 million items sold, while Dr. Melaxin shows around 6.5 million.
The figures illustrate how attention generated through short-form content is translating into actual purchases.
Algorithms Replace Sephora Shelves as the Power of Product Placement Shifts
Understanding K-beauty’s strength on TikTok Shop requires looking at changes in the structure of U.S. cosmetics retail.
In traditional beauty retail, simply securing distribution could represent a significant barrier to entry.
Brands needed access to major retailers and desirable shelf space. Advertising budgets, brand awareness and bargaining power with distributors all mattered.
TikTok Shop operates differently.
The primary space where consumers encounter products is no longer a physical shelf but a smartphone screen.
Algorithms determine subsequent exposure based on signals such as viewing time, sharing and purchasing behavior.
This system is combined with affiliate commerce, where creators promote products and receive commissions when their content generates sales.
In effect, thousands of creators can become individual sales channels for a brand.
Cosmetics are particularly well suited to this format.
Product texture, skin appearance, before-and-after demonstrations and key ingredients can all be communicated through short videos.
Korean brands currently performing strongly on TikTok Shop, including Medicube, Dr. Melaxin and Sungboon Editor, offer many products whose key ingredients and intended benefits can be demonstrated visually and quickly.
However, it would be an overstatement to claim that ingredient-focused branding or a particular video format directly caused their sales rankings.
What is clear is that both the place where consumers discover products and the process through which they buy them are changing.
The traditional journey from store visit to product discovery to purchase has been compressed into short-form video, discovery and immediate checkout.
That environment gives Korean cosmetics companies another route to build visibility in the U.S. market beyond competing solely for physical shelf space at major retailers.
From TikTok to Amazon: Viral Success Spreads Into Mainstream Retail
An even more important shift is that K-beauty brands succeeding on TikTok Shop are not remaining confined to the platform.
Medicube has also climbed Amazon’s beauty sales rankings in the United States.
During Amazon’s October Prime Big Deal Days, U.S. outlet Page Six described Medicube as dominating Amazon’s top-seller charts.
Its Zero Pore Pads were identified as the No. 2 bestseller across Amazon’s broader beauty category at the time.
K-beauty brands including Medicube also appeared prominently in Amazon beauty rankings during Prime Day earlier this year.
This creates a pathway in which consumers first encounter a product on TikTok and later search for or purchase it through familiar retail channels such as Amazon.
The traditional route for entering the U.S. beauty market is therefore being reversed.
Historically, brands often sought placement at major U.S. retailers first, built awareness through those channels and then expanded online.
Today, brands can build awareness through TikTok and Instagram, generate sales through D2C and TikTok Shop, and subsequently expand into Amazon and physical retail.
Brands such as Medicube are already building sales across multiple online channels simultaneously.
This does not mean traditional retail has become irrelevant.
Long-term brand trust and market share in the United States still require broad distribution, including offline channels.
What is changing rapidly is the role of the consumer’s first “shelf.”
For an American shopper, the first encounter with a Korean skincare product may no longer occur at a department store cosmetics counter or specialty retailer.
It may happen in a 15-second video on a smartphone.
K-beauty’s new competitive weapon in the United States is therefore not simply the number of stores carrying its products.
The algorithm deciding what consumers see has itself become the new shelf.
