[Mir’s Business Explained] “Shipped from Korea”—But Who Guarantees Authenticity? K-Beauty Faces a Trust Test

Korean cosmetics may arrive from South Korea with a seller’s assurance that they are genuine. Yet the shipment’s origin alone does not explain who guarantees authenticity or how a buyer can verify that assurance.

As K-beauty expands overseas, distribution transparency is becoming part of the product’s value. Brands need to make reliable purchasing channels visible to consumers, alongside expanding sales.

Reporting published by Bangladesh’s The Business Standard on October 24 highlighted difficulties in checking retailers’ sourcing claims. It did not establish that the businesses interviewed were selling counterfeits. The issue is the gap between sellers’ assurances and information buyers can independently verify.

“Directly Imported from Korea” Does Not Guarantee Authenticity

“Directly imported from Korea,” a phrase consumers often encounter, describes a shipping or sourcing route. “Authorized retailer,” by contrast, indicates that a brand recognizes a seller as part of its distribution network. An authenticity guarantee concerns who verifies that a purchased product is genuine and on what basis. Treating these three claims as interchangeable can lead consumers to expect broader assurances than they actually receive.

Beauty of Joseon’s official guidance illustrates the distinction. The brand guarantees the authenticity of products purchased through its official online store or authorized retailers. Products purchased from unauthorized sellers are not necessarily counterfeit, but the company says it cannot verify their authenticity through photographs, videos or lot numbers alone. Similar packaging and a lot number cannot substitute for verification by the brand.

Some brands also publish distribution information that consumers can check themselves. SKIN1004’s official website lists Friday Skin and Skincare BD as authorized sellers in Bangladesh. Rather than assuming that consumers there have no way to check authenticity, the more useful question is how easily they can find each brand’s information and compare it with the retailer from which they intend to buy.

As K-Beauty Exports Grow, Brands Must Build Trust in Distribution

From a business perspective, expanding distribution has two sides. More retail outlets create more opportunities to reach consumers, but products may also be traded outside the relationships a brand directly manages. Consumers see a single brand, while their purchasing experience is shaped by multiple importers and retailers. Distrust arising along that chain can ultimately affect the reputation of the company that made the product.

An authorized retailer directory is a starting point for narrowing that gap. To be effective, however, it requires more than simply publishing a list. Brands must keep retailers’ exact business names, website addresses and authorization status up to date. Buyers should also be able to find out easily where to direct authenticity enquiries and what can actually be verified.

The competitiveness of Korean cosmetics is not fully established when products arrive on overseas shelves. It must extend to consumers buying with confidence and returning to purchase again. The next challenge for K-beauty companies is to expand export channels while building a system of trust that allows consumers to verify those channels for themselves.
