[Mir's Global Radar] India Courts Four Korean Marine Equipment Firms as $23 Billion Shipbuilding Market Emerges

India is stepping up efforts to attract South Korean marine equipment manufacturers, citing an estimated $23 billion in vessel demand as it seeks to expand its domestic shipbuilding industry.

According to India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met representatives of the Korea Marine Equipment Association (KOMEA) in Busan to discuss investment opportunities and industrial cooperation.

In an official statement released on October 26, the Indian government identified SB Sunbo, Daeyang, KASEMEC and JO Engineering among Korean companies that discussed potential investments in India's maritime sector.

India estimates that demand from government entities could exceed 400 vessels worth approximately $23 billion over the next decade. The government hopes to use this prospective demand to encourage Korean equipment suppliers to establish manufacturing operations and participate in India's expanding shipbuilding supply chain.

KOMEA is also scheduled to open its first Indian office in Mumbai on October 30, creating a local platform to support Korean marine equipment manufacturers exploring the Indian market.

India Seeks Korean Suppliers for Its Expanding Shipbuilding Industry
India's push to attract Korean marine equipment manufacturers is closely linked to its broader strategy of expanding shipbuilding capacity and developing a domestic equipment supply chain.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways estimates that demand from government entities could exceed 400 vessels worth approximately $23 billion over the next decade.
In September 2025, the Indian government approved a shipbuilding support package worth approximately $7.8 billion, aimed at strengthening shipyard capacity and the industry's financial and manufacturing foundations.

The pipeline of vessels eligible for direct government assistance now includes more than 120 ships valued at over $1.27 billion. Export orders account for more than 80% of the pipeline's value, according to the ministry.

The figures reflect India's ambition to become a globally competitive shipbuilding nation rather than merely meet domestic demand.

During his meeting with Korean industry representatives, Sonowal highlighted India's continuing dependence on imported high-value equipment, including engines, propulsion systems, deck machinery, and electrical and navigation systems.

He presented that dependence as an opportunity for Korean manufacturers to participate in the country's growing shipbuilding supply chain.

Four Korean Equipment Makers Explore Investment Opportunities
A notable development from the meeting was the Indian government's identification of four Korean marine equipment companies involved in discussions about potential investments.

According to the ministry, SB Sunbo, Daeyang, KASEMEC and JO Engineering were among the companies that explored opportunities in India's maritime sector.

Their participation suggests that bilateral shipbuilding cooperation could expand beyond major Korean shipbuilders to include specialized equipment manufacturers.

India is encouraging several forms of cooperation, including joint ventures with local partners, technology licensing arrangements and the establishment of wholly owned manufacturing facilities.

The government has also expressed its willingness to support Korean companies seeking to establish operations in India. Local manufacturing could allow Korean equipment suppliers to serve Indian shipyards while becoming part of the country's developing maritime supply chain.

The companies remain at the exploratory stage, with no company-specific investment amounts, factory construction schedules or binding joint venture agreements announced.

KOMEA's Mumbai Office to Support Korean Suppliers' Expansion
A new local platform is expected to support Korean marine equipment companies seeking to enter India.

The Korea Marine Equipment Association plans to open its first Indian office in Mumbai on October 30. KOMEA represents 304 member companies involved in marine equipment manufacturing, ship design, shipbuilding and repair.

The office opening follows the bilateral VOYAGES cooperation framework adopted in April, covering shipbuilding, shipping and maritime logistics. KOMEA Chairman Kang Ho-il said member companies have begun preparing to enter the Indian market within the next two years.

The Indian government expects the Mumbai office to serve as a long-term platform supporting joint ventures, technology partnerships and local manufacturing operations.
The initiative could mark a broader shift in Korean shipbuilding companies' international expansion strategies.

While overseas shipbuilding cooperation has traditionally focused on vessel orders and major shipyards, specialized equipment manufacturers may increasingly participate in developing local industrial supply chains.

If India's shipbuilding policies translate into actual vessel orders and manufacturing investments, the country could become an important new market for Korea's small and medium-sized marine equipment suppliers.
