[Mir's Money Move] Insuring the Future Value of AI Chips: Why GPUs Are Becoming Financial Assets
What happens if an artificial intelligence (AI) chip purchased for a substantial sum loses much of its value three years later? Until recently, that risk largely fell on the company buying the equipment or the financial institution lending against it. Now, a new insurance product in the United States is designed to protect against declines in the future resale value of AI chips.
On October 17, American Compute, a US-based AI infrastructure finance services company, announced the launch of residual value insurance for graphics processing units (GPUs). Under the arrangement, an insurer covers the difference if the resale value of insured GPU servers falls below a predetermined level at a specified date, subject to the policy's terms.
As enormous amounts of capital flow into AI infrastructure, GPUs are evolving beyond semiconductor products into collateral for bank loans and income-generating assets for equipment leasing companies. The addition of insurance is creating another layer of financial activity around the AI industry.
The purpose is not to prevent GPU prices from falling. It is to estimate their future value and transfer a defined portion of the downside risk to insurers, potentially allowing lenders to provide more financing.
What Happens if a GPU Worth 10 Billion Won Falls Below 2 Billion Won in Three Years?
GPU residual value insurance differs from conventional equipment insurance. Rather than paying for repairs when hardware is damaged, it guarantees a minimum resale value at a specified future date.
Suppose an AI cloud company purchases GPU servers worth 10 billion won and obtains insurance guaranteeing a residual value of 2 billion won after three years. If the equipment can be sold for only 500 million won, the insurer would cover the 1.5 billion won shortfall, subject to the policy's conditions.
If the resale value instead reaches 3 billion won, no payment would be triggered. The insurance does not compensate for every price movement. It covers losses below an agreed minimum value.
American Compute provides a similar example in its product announcement. If GPU equipment carries an insured residual value equal to 20% of its original value but sells for only 5%, the insurer would cover the 15-percentage-point difference.
American Compute does not underwrite these policies itself. The program accesses insurance capacity from Incline P&C Group through Accelerant's insurance platform, while licensed insurance broker Matcha Specialty operates the program.
Under this structure, an AI cloud company purchases GPUs and sells computing services. Financial institutions provide loans or leases backed by the equipment. Insurers accept a defined portion of the risk that future resale proceeds will fall below the insured level, earning premiums in return.
For lenders, the arrangement can reduce uncertainty surrounding collateral values. For insurers, it creates a new source of business tied to AI infrastructure. A single category of semiconductor equipment can therefore generate revenue for manufacturers, operators, lenders, leasing companies and insurers in different ways.
Why Would Insurers Take the Risk of Falling Chip Prices?
GPUs are far from straightforward assets for insurers. Unlike cars or ships, AI chips can experience rapid changes in economic value as technology advances.
Even today's most powerful GPUs may become less competitive when newer models deliver the same computing performance at lower cost or with greater energy efficiency. Resale prices depend not only on chip performance but also on AI service demand, data center capacity, electricity costs and prices for new semiconductors.
That makes it difficult for insurers to offer generous guarantees based on optimistic forecasts of future resale values.
According to an August report by insurance industry publication The Insurer, American Compute described an approach that sets insured values substantially below central estimates of future GPU prices. For example, even if an asset is projected to retain 70% of its current value, the insured floor might be set at just 30%.
Rather than compensating for ordinary depreciation, the policy is designed to protect against a much steeper decline. This approach helps insurers manage risk by limiting the circumstances in which a payout becomes necessary.
Premiums are also likely to differ from those for conventional equipment. The Insurer reported that traditional residual value insurance can carry premiums of approximately 7% to 10% of the insured limit, while GPU coverage was expected to be more expensive because of greater price volatility.
At the time, American Compute was planning an initial underwriting limit of $5 million per risk and said larger exposures of up to $25 million could be handled through a separate structure.
The company currently states on its website that it has supported more than $600 million in financing transactions across North America, Asia and Europe and works with more than 50 funding partners. These figures refer to its broader financing and valuation activities, not the amount of GPU residual value insurance sold.
Ultimately, insurers are not selling certainty about the future price of semiconductors. They are selling their ability to manage uncertainty through pricing data, conservative coverage limits and premiums.
The Computer Insurance Crisis of 50 Years Ago Returns as a Warning for AI Finance
GPU residual value insurance is not an entirely new financial concept. Similar structures appeared in the mainframe computer market roughly half a century ago.
During the 1970s, leasing became increasingly popular among US corporations and government agencies seeking to use expensive mainframe computers without purchasing them outright. Leasing companies borrowed money from banks to acquire equipment and repaid the loans with rental income collected over several years.
The problem was technological progress.
In 1979, IBM introduced its 4300 series, offering greater computing performance at lower prices. The economic value of older mainframes came under pressure. Customers had stronger incentives to cancel existing leases or switch to newer machines, exposing the banks and insurers supporting those contracts to significant risks.
At the time, underwriters at London's Lloyd's insurance market had sold policies covering losses associated with canceled computer leases. As technological change unfolded more rapidly than anticipated, the market faced substantial insurance claims.
According to research cited by The Insurer, computer-leasing insurance losses across the Lloyd's market were estimated at approximately $340 million to $400 million.
The striking point is how closely the financial structures resemble each other. Expensive technology equipment is purchased with borrowed money, rental income is used to recover the investment, and insurance is introduced to protect against unexpected deterioration in the asset's economic value.
The GPU residual value policies emerging today are not identical to the computer lease cancellation insurance of the 1970s. Their insured events and payout conditions differ. Nevertheless, both confront the same fundamental problem: technological innovation can undermine the assumptions used to value assets backing financial contracts.
In today's AI industry, that risk could spread across a much larger financing market. Data center operators are borrowing against GPUs, lenders are estimating the future value of the equipment, and insurers are beginning to assume defined portions of the risk that those values will fall below agreed levels.
Nvidia has also reportedly explored arrangements with insurers to share risks associated with GPU-backed lending. Competition in semiconductors is therefore expanding beyond the number of chips sold to include how easily customers can obtain financing to purchase them.
There are implications for South Korea's semiconductor industry as well. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) and other key components supplied by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are closely linked to global investment in AI servers. Greater access to GPU financing could support equipment purchases, while falling collateral values or rising financing costs could have the opposite effect on new investment.
Competition in AI semiconductors is no longer limited to performance and price. The ability to finance equipment purchases, assess future resale values and allocate unexpected losses is becoming part of the industry's competitive structure.
The emergence of insurance for the future value of AI chips reflects how capital-intensive the industry has become. It also marks the beginning of an era in which financial markets must account for the speed of semiconductor innovation itself.
