[Mir's Global Radar]Samsung Fire’s Samsung Re Joins Planned US$200 Million Data Centre Insurance Facility
Samsung Re, the Singapore-based reinsurance subsidiary wholly owned by Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, is participating in the development of a dedicated insurance facility for data centres in Asia.
The Monetary Authority of Singapore named Samsung Re alongside MSIG, Gallagher Re, SCOR and the Cybersecurity Association Singapore in a keynote address published on November 2. The facility is planned with US$200 million in initial underwriting capacity, with an MOU scheduled to be signed during the week.
The Singapore-based facility is being developed to serve data centre insurance needs across Asia. Its proposed coverage spans construction, operations, supply chains, design and cyber risks.
Participants will pool underwriting capacity and specialist expertise, with capacity expected to expand over time. The US$200 million figure represents the facility’s combined initial capacity; Samsung Re’s individual share has not been disclosed.
MAS said insurance solutions for data centres remain fragmented, while individual insurers may face limits on the scale and breadth of risks they can assume.
Data centres depend on substantial grid capacity, specialised cooling systems and complex supply chains. Their exposures extend from construction risks to property damage, cyber incidents, operational downtime and contractual obligations.
Chee welcomed additional insurers, reinsurers and partners to contribute capacity and expertise, positioning Singapore as a one-stop insurance hub for the region’s data centre projects.
Samsung Re is a Singapore-incorporated general reinsurer wholly owned by Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance. Reinsurers assume part of the risks held by insurance companies in exchange for reinsurance premiums.
According to its official company profile, Samsung Re was incorporated in 2011 and conducts business across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and North Africa.
