[미디어펜=편집국]삼성중공업이 건조하는 초대형가스운반선(VLGC) 4척의 발주처와 핵심 가스처리 시스템 공급업체가 해외에서 구체적으로 확인됐다.
7일 해양·에너지 전문매체 오프쇼어 에너지에 따르면 영국 밥콕 인터내셔널(Babcock International) 산하 해양 액화가스 전문기업 밥콕 LGE는 삼성중공업이 건조하는 8만8000㎥급 VLGC 4척에 들어갈 가스처리 시스템 관련 계약을 수주했다.
특히 이번 해외 보도를 통해 해당 선박의 선주가 오세오닉스라는 사실도 공개됐다. 오프쇼어 에너지는 4척이 한국에서 오세오닉스를 위해 건조되고 있다고 전했다.
삼성중공업과 밥콕 LGE는 4척의 건조를 위한 엔지니어링과 시스템 납품 과정에서 긴밀하게 협력할 예정이다. 선박 인도는 2029년으로 예정돼 있다. 밥콕 LGE는 인도 이후에도 오세오닉스와 장기적인 지원 관계를 구축해 선박의 가스 시스템이 최적의 성능을 유지하도록 지원한다는 계획이다.
이번 계약은 단순한 해외 기자재 업체의 수주를 넘어 ‘삼성중공업-오세오닉스-밥콕 LGE’로 이어지는 VLGC 프로젝트의 공급망 구조가 해외에서 구체적으로 드러났다는 점에서 주목된다.

The shipowner and a key gas-handling system supplier for four very large gas carriers (VLGCs) being built by Samsung Heavy Industries have been identified through an overseas industry report.
According to Offshore Energy on September 7, Babcock LGE, the liquefied-gas engineering business of the UK's Babcock International, has secured a contract involving four 88,000-cubic-meter VLGCs under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea.
The report identified Oceonix as the shipowner behind the four vessels.
Samsung Heavy Industries and Babcock LGE will work closely throughout the engineering and delivery program, with the vessels scheduled for delivery in 2029. Babcock LGE also plans to establish a long-term support relationship with Oceonix following delivery.
The project provides a clearer picture of the supply chain behind the newbuildings, linking Samsung Heavy Industries, shipowner Oceonix and gas-handling specialist Babcock LGE.

이번 프로젝트의 핵심 가운데 하나는 VLGC의 심장부라고 할 수 있는 액화가스 처리 기술이다.
밥콕 LGE는 LPG와 암모니아를 비롯한 액화가스 운반선의 화물처리·연료가스 및 재액화 관련 기술을 공급하는 전문기업이다. 회사에 따르면 LPG·암모니아 가스운반선용 화물처리 시스템 분야에서 50년 이상의 경험을 보유하고 있다.
특히 밥콕 LGE의 액화가스 기술은 화물을 안정적으로 처리하는 동시에 선박의 운항 효율을 높이는 역할을 한다. 회사의 ecoVGC 기술은 2012년 이후 200척 이상의 LPG 운반선에 설치됐다.
밥콕 LGE는 이번 계약이 삼성중공업과의 관계를 한 단계 강화하는 계기가 될 것으로 보고 있다.
앤드루 피츠제럴드 밥콕 LGE 상업담당 이사는 이번 계약이 삼성중공업과의 관계와 자사 기술에 대한 신뢰를 보여준다며 향후에도 양사 협력을 확대하겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.
밥콕 LGE 입장에서도 이번 4척 수주는 글로벌 VLGC 시장에서 입지를 확대하는 의미가 있다. 삼성중공업이라는 글로벌 대형 조선소를 통해 자사의 가스처리 기술 적용 선박을 추가 확보하게 됐기 때문이다.

Babcock LGE specializes in technologies for the marine liquefied-gas market, including cargo handling, fuel-gas supply and reliquefaction solutions for LPG, ammonia and other gas carriers.
The company has more than five decades of experience supplying cargo-handling systems for LPG and ammonia carriers.
Babcock LGE views the latest contract as another step in strengthening its relationship with Samsung Heavy Industries and expanding its position in the global VLGC market.
The two companies will work together through the engineering and delivery stages of all four vessels.

오프쇼어 에너지는 삼성중공업이 건조하는 4척의 VLGC가 오세오닉스를 위한 선박이라고 명시했다.
조선사가 수주 계약을 발표할 때 비밀유지 등의 이유로 선주를 공개하지 않는 경우가 적지 않다. 하지만 이후 엔진이나 화물처리 시스템, 압축기 등 핵심 기자재 업체의 계약발표 과정에서 실제 프로젝트 구조가 구체화되는 경우가 있다.
이번 건도 밥콕 LGE의 공급계약을 통해 삼성중공업이 건조하는 선박의 선주와 핵심 시스템 공급업체가 함께 드러난 사례다.
밥콕 LGE는 선박 건조단계에만 참여하는 것이 아니다.
회사는 2029년 선박 인도 이후에도 오세오닉스와 장기적인 관계를 구축해 가스 시스템의 운항 성능을 지원한다는 계획이다.
선박용 액화가스 시스템 사업이 일회성 기자재 판매를 넘어 유지·보수와 성능관리 등 선박의 전체 생애주기로 확대되고 있는 것이다.

The shipowner's identity is another notable aspect of the overseas report.
Offshore Energy explicitly stated that the four VLGCs being built by Samsung Heavy Industries are for Oceonix.
Shipowners are sometimes left undisclosed when shipbuilding contracts are initially announced because of confidentiality requirements. More details about individual projects can subsequently emerge through contracts awarded to equipment and technology suppliers.
This project is an example of that process, with Babcock LGE's contract revealing both the owner and a key supplier behind the Samsung Heavy Industries newbuildings.
Babcock LGE also intends to continue supporting Oceonix after the vessels are delivered in 2029, extending its role beyond the construction stage and into the ships' operational lifecycle.

밥콕 LGE는 이미 한국 조선업계와 오랜 관계를 구축해왔다. 과거 HD현대중공업·HD현대삼호·HD현대미포와 LPG 화물처리 시스템 관련 기본협약을 체결하고 다수의 프로젝트를 수행했다.
삼성중공업과의 관계도 확대되고 있다. 밥콕은 2025년 반기 실적자료에서 LGE 사업부가 삼성중공업과 유럽 선주를 대상으로 한 첫 프로젝트를 성공적으로 수행했다고 밝힌 바 있다.
삼성중공업은 LNG운반선뿐 아니라 LPG·암모니아 운반선 등 고부가가치 가스선 시장을 적극적으로 공략하고 있다. 이에 따라 글로벌 가스처리·연료공급 전문업체들과의 기술 협업도 중요해지고 있다.
이번에 드러난 구조는 삼성중공업이 선박을 건조하고, 오세오닉스가 선주로 참여하며, 밥콕 LGE가 핵심 가스처리 기술을 공급하는 형태다.
한국 조선사의 수주 공시만 들여다봐서는 보이지 않던 프로젝트의 속살이 해외 기자재 공급망을 거꾸로 추적하면서 드러난 셈이다.
