[Mir’s Global Radar] Samsung Electronics’ Egypt Plant Accelerates Solar Transition…4.3 MW Power Facility Begins Operations
Samsung Electronics has begun receiving renewable electricity from a newly commissioned 4.3 MW solar power plant at its manufacturing facility in Beni Suef, Egypt, a key production hub serving markets across the Middle East and Africa.
Rather than directly building and owning the solar facility, Samsung is purchasing electricity under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement, or PPA, while local renewable energy developer Solarize Egypt owns, operates and maintains the plant.
The project is backed by green financing involving the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Union and the Green Climate Fund.
The structure allows Samsung Electronics Egypt to expand its use of renewable electricity without directly owning the generation facility.
According to Daily News Egypt and the EBRD, Solarize Egypt has successfully commissioned the 4.3 MW solar power plant at Samsung Electronics Egypt's manufacturing facility in Beni Suef.
Renewable electricity generated by the plant will be supplied directly to Samsung's manufacturing operations.
Samsung Electronics Egypt said the project forms part of its broader effort to integrate sustainability into manufacturing while improving operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Samsung buys electricity rather than owning the plant
The significance of the project lies not only in its 4.3 MW capacity but also in its business structure.
Solarize Egypt fully owns the solar power plant and is responsible for its operation and maintenance. Samsung Electronics purchases the renewable electricity generated by the facility through a long-term PPA.
Under this model, the renewable energy developer finances and operates the generation assets while the industrial customer purchases electricity over an extended period.
The structure enables Samsung to increase its use of renewable energy without directly owning the solar generation assets while potentially improving long-term energy cost stability and reducing carbon emissions associated with manufacturing.
Samsung's Beni Suef facility has already been expanding its use of renewable energy. The newly commissioned 4.3 MW PPA project therefore represents an additional step in the plant's broader energy transition rather than its first adoption of solar power.
The Beni Suef complex is also one of Samsung's major manufacturing bases serving markets across Africa and the Middle East.
According to information released by Egypt's Ministry of Industry in June, the 366,000-square-metre complex has annual production capacity of about 5 million televisions and 6 million mobile phones. Its exports are estimated at approximately $750 million annually, reaching 65 countries.
▲EBRD·EU·GCF
이집트 최대 민간은행 가운데 하나인 CIB(Commercial International Bank)도 금융에 참여했다.
Green finance backs renewable energy for manufacturing
The project also demonstrates how international green finance can support renewable energy deployment at large industrial facilities.
Financing was provided through the EBRD's Green Economy Financing Facility, with support from the European Union and the Green Climate Fund. Egypt's Commercial International Bank also participated in the financing structure.
According to EBRD project information, the investment associated with the Samsung Egypt solar project totals approximately $1.414 million, with estimated annual greenhouse gas savings of about 4,097 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
Solarize Egypt also received an EU-funded incentive payment of approximately €119,000 following successful implementation and verification of the project.
The structure combines international green finance with private-sector renewable energy investment to supply clean electricity directly to a major manufacturing facility.
Egypt is expanding industrial solar deployment, supported by strong solar resources and growing demand among manufacturers for more predictable energy costs and lower emissions.
For Samsung Electronics, the PPA model provides another route to increase renewable electricity use at its Beni Suef manufacturing base without directly owning the power-generation assets.
The next point to watch will be how much the newly commissioned 4.3 MW plant increases the share of renewable electricity in the Beni Suef facility's overall energy mix.
As Samsung expands both manufacturing and renewable energy use in Egypt, its Beni Suef complex is emerging not only as a regional export hub but also as an example of the changing energy model for global manufacturing operations.
