[Mir's Easy Business] One in Three Electric Vans in Europe Is a Kia PV5…No. 1 Even in Volkswagen's Home Market
Kia's PV5 is making a surprisingly strong impact on Europe's automotive market—not in passenger EVs, but in electric commercial vans.
In the first half of this year, more than one out of every three electric C-segment vans sold in Europe was a Kia PV5.
The PV5 also ranked first in its segment in Germany, one of the world's automotive powerhouses and home to commercial-vehicle giants such as Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz.
According to Kia Europe, citing data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), 13,116 PV5 units were sold across Europe in the first half of the year.
That gave the model a 37% share of Europe's electric C-segment van market.
Put simply, more than one in every three electric vans sold in this class in Europe was a PV5.
The model sold 2,206 units in Germany and 3,361 units in the United Kingdom, ranking first in its segment in both countries.
Across Europe, the PV5 took the top spot in 12 countries, including Germany and the UK.
Its dominance was even more pronounced in several markets.
The PV5 captured 63% of the segment in Denmark, 62% in Ireland, 59% in Sweden, 58% in Finland and 54% in the UK.
In those countries, more than half of all electric C-segment vans sold were Kia PV5s.
Why Is Kia So Strong in Vans Rather Than Passenger Cars?
To understand the PV5's rapid rise in Europe, it helps to look at commercial vehicles differently from passenger cars.
Passenger-car buyers may prioritize design, brand image and driving performance. Businesses buying commercial vehicles tend to ask different questions.
"How much cargo can this vehicle carry?" "How long can it operate each day?" "Can it be adapted to fit my business?" Ultimately, the key question is how effectively the vehicle can generate revenue.
That is precisely where Kia has focused its PV5 strategy.
The PV5 is built on Kia's dedicated PBV platform. PBV stands for Purpose Built Vehicle—a vehicle designed from the outset to be easily adapted for specific businesses and services.
A simple analogy is a Lego baseplate.
Kia provides the basic vehicle platform, while delivery companies, logistics operators, camper specialists and other businesses can add the bodies and equipment they need.
That is why the PV5 is closer to a commercial mobility platform than simply another electric van.
Kia is expanding the PV5 family across Cargo, Passenger and Chassis Cab configurations.
The Chassis Cab, now expanding its presence in Europe, provides perhaps the clearest example of this strategy.
Selling an 'Unfinished' Vehicle—Then Turning It Into Refrigerated Vans, Ambulances and Work Trucks
A Chassis Cab includes the driver's cab, front section, battery, powertrain and basic vehicle structure, while leaving the rear body unfinished.
At first glance, it may look as though Kia is selling a vehicle before it is fully completed.
That is precisely the advantage.
Customers can configure the rear section to suit the needs of their businesses.
Applications presented by Kia in Europe include refrigerated and temperature-controlled bodies, mobile workshops, ambulances and service vehicles, box vans and tipper-style work trucks.
The platform can also be adapted for campers and various leisure and service applications.
The PV5 Chassis Cab offers a maximum payload of 1,005 kilograms.
Depending on the market and configuration, it can offer driving range of up to around 416 kilometers, while DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
This represents a different approach from the traditional automotive model of mass-producing and selling a single type of finished vehicle.
Kia supplies the underlying vehicle platform, while specialist conversion companies can build dozens of different commercial vehicles on top of it.
A useful comparison is the smartphone business: Kia provides the core hardware and platform, while other businesses effectively add the "applications" they need.
Is 37% Just the Beginning? Kia Is Targeting the Commercial-Vehicle Platform Business
The most important figure in the PV5's European performance is not simply the 13,116 units sold.
It is the 37% market share.
Kia has already taken the No. 1 position in Europe's electric C-segment van market despite being a relatively new entrant in the region's electric commercial-vehicle sector.
The market itself is also expanding.
Sales of rechargeable vans in Europe increased 37.5% year-on-year in the first half, while their share of the overall van market rose from 10.2% a year earlier to 13.9%.
In other words, Kia is expanding the PV5's footprint at the same time that the underlying electric-van market is growing.
Kia's ambitions also extend beyond the PV5.
The company plans to expand its PBV lineup with larger models such as the PV7 and PV9 while combining those vehicles with a wider range of bodies, conversions and services.
What Kia ultimately wants, therefore, is more than simply to sell large numbers of electric vans.
Traditionally, automakers built finished vehicles and sold them to customers. In the PBV era, a single vehicle platform can instead be adapted for logistics, delivery, camping, construction, healthcare and many other industries.
That is what makes the PV5's 37% European market share significant.
It suggests that Kia may be doing more than successfully launching a new electric van. The company is attempting to expand from a business that simply "builds and sells cars" into one that provides mobility platforms tailored to the needs of different industries.
