[미디어펜=편집국]삼성전자가 접는 기술(폴더블)과 말아 넣는 기술(롤러블)을 결합해 평소에는 직사각형 상자 모양이지만, 펼치면 대형 태블릿PC로 확장되는 새로운 형태의 스마트폰 디자인 특허를 미국에서 취득했다.

21일(현지시간) 베트남의 최대 유력 매체인 ‘브이앤익스프레스(VnExpress)’에 따르면, 미국 특허상표청(USPTO)은 최근 삼성전자가 신청한 이 하이브리드 디스플레이 기기의 디자인 특허를 공식 승인했다.

이번 특허 취득이 당장 제품으로 상용화되지 않더라도, 중국 경쟁사의 추격에 대응해 차세대 폼팩터(기기 형태) 제어기술 장벽을 다지기 위한 포석으로 분석된다. 

Samsung has patented a new type of smartphone design in the United States that combines folding (foldable) and rolling (rollable) technologies, allowing it to normally look like a rectangular box but expand into a large tablet PC when opened.

According to Vietnam's largest leading media outlet VnExpress on June 21 (local time), the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently officially approved the design patent for this hybrid display device applied for by Samsung. 

Even if this patent acquisition is not commercialized as a product immediately, it is analyzed as a strategic move to solidify technology barriers in controlling next-generation form factors (device shapes) in response to the chasing pursuits of Chinese competitors

공개된 기술 문서에 따르면, 이 기기는 평소에 화면이 외부의 여러 면을 감싸고 있는 정사각형 벽돌모양의 상자형태를 띠고 있다.

사용자가 넓은 화면공간이 필요할때 기기는 두단계로 확장된다. 먼저 일반적인 폴더블폰처럼 책 모양으로 반을 펼친 뒤, 내부의 롤러블 메커니즘을 작동시켜 화면 패널을 옆으로 길게 늘리는 방식이다.

이 두 가지 기술이 결합하면 삼성전자의 차세대 폴더블폰(갤럭시 Z 폴드7)보다 훨씬 거대한 화면을 확보할 수 있게 된다.

도면에는 구체적인 수치나 규격이 적혀있지 않아, 삼성디스플레이 연구팀이 미래기술 선점을 위해 확보한 순수 아이디어 단계인 것으로 파악된다.

Equipped with Two Expansion Mechanisms: Maximizing Screen Size by Folding and Stretching

According to the disclosed technical documents, this device normally takes the shape of a square brick-like box with the screen wrapping around multiple exterior faces.

When a user requires a wide screen space, the device expands in two stages. First, it opens in half like a book, similar to a conventional foldable phone, and then activates an internal rollable mechanism to stretch the screen panel out horizontally. 

When these two technologies combine, it can secure a significantly larger screen than Samsung's next-generation foldable phone (Galaxy Z Fold7).

Since the drawings do not state specific measurements or specifications, it is understood to be a pure idea stage secured by the Samsung Display research team to preempt future technologies.

삼성전자는 이미 세번 접는 스마트폰인 '갤럭시 Z 트리폴드'를 한정판으로 내놓아 빠르게 완판시키는 등 과감한 기술력을 입증해 왔다.

업계 전문가들은 이처럼 모양이 특이한 기기는 대량생산 연속성을 맞추기 어렵고 가격이 비싸 대중화에는 시간이 걸릴 것으로 본다. 

또 두껍고 화면이 겉으로 다 드러나, 떨어뜨렸을 때 내구성이 취약하다는 단점이 있다. 그럼에도 IT매체인 폰아레나는 삼성전자가 이런 이색특허를 계속 쌓아두는 행보를 대형 호재로 평가했다

내부 부품공간을 극한으로 줄이는 설계 노하우와 화면을 말아 넣는 기술자산은 향후 출시될 정규 갤럭시Z폴드 라인업의 성능개량에 고스란히 이식될 것으로 전망된다.

Strategy to Protect Market Presence: Utilizing Technical Assets for Future Galaxy Z Series Component Designs

Samsung has already proven its bold engineering capabilities by introducing the triple-folding smartphone 'Galaxy Z TriFold' as a limited edition, which quickly sold out earlier this year.

Industry experts view that devices with such unique shapes face difficulties in matching manufacturing continuity for mass production, and their high price points mean wide adoption will take time. 

Additionally, it has disadvantages such as a thick profile and exposed screens on all sides, making its durability vulnerable when dropped. 

Nevertheless, the IT media outlet PhoneArena evaluated Samsung's continuous accumulation of these distinctive patents as a major positive signal. 

The design engineering know-how of reducing internal component space to the limit and the technology assets of rolling screens are projected to be integrated directly into the performance upgrades of the regular Galaxy Z Fold lineup scheduled for future release.
