[미디어펜=편집국]기아 텔루라이드가 미국 자동차 전문기자가 올해 직접 운전해 본 수십 종의 신차 가운데 최고의 차로 선정됐다. 현대차 코나와 제네시스 GV70도 톱10에 이름을 올리면서 현대자동차그룹의 현대차·기아·제네시스 3개 브랜드가 나란히 상위권에 진입했다.

1일(현지시간) 미국 USA TODAY Cars와 테네시 지역매체 더 테네시언에 따르면 자동차 전문기자는 올해 직접 시승한 신차를 대상으로 선정한 ‘2026년 지금까지 운전해 본 최고의 신차 10대’에서 2027년형 기아 텔루라이드를 1위로 선정했다.

이번 평가는 단순한 제원 비교나 소비자 설문이 아니라 기자가 수십 종의 신차를 각각 5~7일 동안 직접 운전한 결과를 토대로 했다는 점이 특징이다. 장보기와 공원·체육관 이동 등 일상생활은 물론 일부 차량은 장거리 여행까지 운행하면서 실제 연비와 고속도로 주행 성능, 기본 사양의 활용도 등을 점검했다.

최종 순위에서는 기아 텔루라이드가 1위를 차지했고 스바루 아웃백이 2위, 혼다 CR-V 하이브리드가 3위에 올랐다. GMC 유콘이 4위였으며 현대 코나는 5위에 선정됐다. 이어 GMC 시에라, 루시드 그래비티, 토요타 프리우스 플러그인 하이브리드(PHEV)가 뒤를 이었고 제네시스 GV70은 9위를 기록했다. 뷰익 엔비스타가 10위였다.

Kia Telluride has been named the best new vehicle among dozens of models personally tested this year by a U.S. automotive journalist. Hyundai Kona and Genesis GV70 also made the top 10, putting all three Hyundai Motor Group brands — Hyundai, Kia and Genesis — among the highest-ranked new vehicles.

According to USA TODAY Cars and Tennessee-based newspaper The Tennessean on September 1, the automotive journalist ranked the 2027 Kia Telluride No. 1 on a list of the “10 best new vehicles” personally driven so far in 2026.

Unlike rankings based solely on specifications or consumer surveys, the assessment was based on hands-on testing. The journalist drove dozens of new vehicles for five to seven days each, using them for everyday activities such as grocery runs and trips to parks and gyms. Some vehicles were also taken on long road trips to evaluate real-world fuel economy, highway performance and the usefulness of standard features.

The 2027 Kia Telluride took the top spot, followed by the Subaru Outback in second place and the Honda CR-V Hybrid in third. The GMC Yukon ranked fourth, while the Hyundai Kona placed fifth. The GMC Sierra, Lucid Gravity and Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid followed, with the Genesis GV70 ranking ninth and the Buick Envista rounding out the top 10.

텔루라이드에 대한 평가는 상당히 강했다. 기자는 텔루라이드의 대형 디스플레이와 풍부한 기본 기술 사양, 가족이 이용하기에 충분한 실내와 적재공간을 장점으로 꼽았다. 주행 재미와 준수한 연비, 새롭게 디자인된 외관도 높은 평가를 받았다.

특히 단점에 대해서는 새 텔루라이드에서 잘못된 점을 찾기가 “극도로 어렵다(extremely difficult)”고 평가했다.

V6 엔진을 선택할 수 없다는 점은 일부 소비자가 단점으로 지적할 수 있지만 터보 4기통 엔진과 선택 가능한 하이브리드 파워트레인이 충분히 제 역할을 한다고 설명했다.

텔루라이드는 이번 평가에서 스바루 아웃백과 혼다 CR-V 하이브리드, GMC 유콘 등 미국과 일본 브랜드의 주요 모델을 모두 제쳤다.

특히 텔루라이드가 북미 시장을 겨냥한 기아의 대표적인 대형 스포츠유틸리티차량(SUV)이라는 점에서 이번 평가는 의미가 있다. 기존 텔루라이드가 미국 시장에서 확보한 상품 경쟁력을 신형 모델이 이어갈 가능성을 보여주는 평가이기 때문이다.

The assessment of the Kia Telluride was particularly strong.

The journalist praised the Telluride for its massive display screens, extensive standard technology and generous passenger and cargo space for families. Its engaging driving characteristics, decent fuel economy and redesigned exterior styling were also highlighted as key strengths.

When it came to weaknesses, the journalist said it was “extremely difficult” to find anything wrong with the new Telluride.

While some drivers may criticize the absence of a V6 engine option, the review found that the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and available hybrid powertrain were capable of getting the job done.

In taking the top spot, the Telluride finished ahead of major American and Japanese models including the Subaru Outback, Honda CR-V Hybrid and GMC Yukon.

The result is particularly meaningful given the Telluride's position as one of Kia's flagship large SUVs developed with the North American market in mind. The ranking suggests that the redesigned model could build on the strong product reputation established by the previous-generation Telluride in the U.S. market.

단점으로는 뒷좌석 공간이 다소 좁고 일부 탑승자가 실내 디자인을 지나치게 단순하다고 느낄 수 있다는 점이 꼽혔다. 다만 기자 자신은 코나의 현대적인 실내 디자인을 긍정적으로 평가했다.

코나가 5위에 오르면서 현대차는 혼다·토요타 등 미국 시장에서 강력한 경쟁력을 갖춘 일본 브랜드의 주요 친환경·SUV 모델과 어깨를 나란히 했다.

현대차그룹 입장에서는 텔루라이드가 대형 패밀리 SUV 시장에서 1위를 차지한 데 이어 상대적으로 가격 접근성이 높은 소형 SUV 코나까지 상위권에 오르면서 미국 시장에서 다양한 가격대의 상품 경쟁력을 인정받았다는 의미가 있다.

The 2026 Kona has a U.S. starting price of $25,500. The journalist praised the model for its affordability, agile driving characteristics and strong standard technology package.

Its overall value proposition was a particular strength. Despite its relatively accessible price, the Kona was seen as delivering an attractive combination of modern technology and enjoyable driving dynamics.

The review noted that rear-seat space could feel cramped and that some passengers found the interior too simplistic. However, the journalist personally viewed the Kona's modern cabin styling positively.

By ranking fifth, the Kona placed among major models from Japanese and American manufacturers with strong positions in the U.S. SUV and electrified-vehicle markets.

For Hyundai Motor Group, the result suggests competitive strength across different segments and price points, with the Telluride leading the large family SUV category while the more affordable Kona also secured a top-five position.

단점으로는 2열 레그룸이 충분히 넓지 않다는 점이 지적됐다.

GV70의 톱10 진입으로 현대차그룹은 기아 텔루라이드 1위, 현대 코나 5위, 제네시스 GV70 9위를 기록하며 현대차·기아·제네시스 3개 브랜드를 모두 순위에 올렸다.

톱10 밖에서도 한국차의 존재감은 이어졌다. 기자가 별도로 선정한 명예추천(Honorable mentions) 차량에는 제네시스 G90과 G80, 기아 K4 해치백이 포함됐다.

결국 대중 브랜드의 소형 SUV부터 대형 패밀리 SUV, 프리미엄 SUV와 세단까지 현대차그룹 차량들이 고르게 평가 대상에 이름을 올린 셈이다.

미국 자동차 시장에서 현대차그룹의 경쟁력이 특정 인기 차종 하나에 국한되지 않고 현대차·기아·제네시스와 여러 차급으로 확산되고 있다는 점을 보여주는 대목이다.

One of the vehicle's biggest strengths, according to the journalist, was its value compared with German premium competitors. The 2026 GV70 has a U.S. starting price of $48,985.

The review noted that the GV70 is more affordable than many German rivals while remaining sporty and enjoyable to drive, with strong styling and performance.

Limited second-row legroom was identified as its main weakness.

With the GV70 joining the list, Hyundai Motor Group placed all three of its automotive brands in the top 10: the Kia Telluride at No. 1, Hyundai Kona at No. 5 and Genesis GV70 at No. 9.

Korean vehicles also appeared outside the top 10. The journalist's honorable mentions included the Genesis G90, Genesis G80 and Kia K4 Hatchback.

The results mean Hyundai Motor Group vehicles were recognized across a broad spectrum of the market, ranging from affordable compact SUVs and large family SUVs to premium SUVs and luxury sedans.

The rankings also suggest that Hyundai Motor Group's competitiveness in the U.S. market is becoming increasingly diversified across Hyundai, Kia and Genesis rather than depending on a single high-performing model.
