[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] Why LG Electronics Is Expanding Its Global B2B Hubs…Singapore BIC Highlights Its Business Transformation
LG Electronics has opened a new kind of corporate showroom in Singapore.
Its official name is the LG Business Innovation Center, or BIC.
At first glance, it is a place where customers can see products such as large LED displays, transparent OLED screens and digital boards.
But a closer look at why LG is expanding BICs around the world reveals a much larger strategy.
LG Electronics grew into a global company primarily by selling televisions, refrigerators and washing machines directly to consumers.
It is now expanding aggressively into products and solutions for businesses, including commercial displays, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, vehicle components and smart factories.
The customer is changing from the individual consumer to the enterprise.
And the business model is changing as well.
Rather than simply selling a product once, LG increasingly wants to provide hardware and software together and remain involved in installation, operation and maintenance.
The revamped Singapore BIC offers a glimpse of how that transformation is taking place on the ground.
Why, then, is LG building BICs around the world?
Following that question provides a clue to where LG Electronics expects to make its money in the future.

Not Just a Place to See TVs…Why LG Rebuilt Its Singapore BIC
The revamped Singapore BIC opened on August 31 and evolved from what was originally a commercial display showroom.
The new facility, however, is fundamentally different from a traditional exhibition space where products are simply placed on display.
Enterprise customers, system integrators, consultants and resellers can experience products directly and test solutions under conditions closer to their actual business environments.
That includes product testing, technical validation, software integration and the development of customized solutions.
In effect, the BIC functions as a B2B demonstration and validation center.
The products inside also reveal the industries LG is targeting.
The facility showcases Micro LED, transparent OLED, all-in-one LED products, LG CreateBoard solutions for education and corporate customers, indoor and outdoor signage, displays for control rooms and cloud-based management software.
LG is also showcasing a 31.5-inch E-paper display designed partly to replace conventional paper signage in retail and corporate environments.
Potential customers span retail, hospitality, education, offices, transportation, control centers and virtual production.
This highlights a fundamental difference between B2C and B2B sales.
When a consumer buys a television, comparing picture quality, features and price may be enough.
Enterprise purchasing is different.
A hotel installing televisions and management systems across hundreds of rooms, or a corporation equipping an entire office with displays, needs to know whether the products integrate with existing systems, whether multiple devices can be managed efficiently and what operating costs will look like after installation.
That is why LG needs BICs.
They are not merely places to display products. They are places where LG can prove that its solutions work before a customer signs a contract.
Why Build Them Worldwide? LG Is Expanding the Business of Selling to Businesses
A single BIC in Singapore may appear to be a relatively small development.
Placed on a global map, however, the strategy looks different.
LG Electronics operates BICs across major markets in Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere, using them as local contact points for enterprise customers.
Different markets require different solutions.
Demand in the Middle East may center on hotels and large commercial developments. European customers may focus more heavily on corporate and education environments, while Asian markets may offer opportunities in retail, transportation and smart offices.
For LG, BICs can therefore function as forward operating bases for overseas B2B sales.
This fits directly into the broader transformation of LG Electronics.
For decades, home appliances and televisions defined the company.
But global consumer electronics markets are mature.
It is increasingly difficult to generate sustained high growth simply by selling significantly more televisions and refrigerators every year.
That is one reason LG is expanding B2B businesses.
Alongside commercial displays, the company is developing businesses serving enterprise customers in HVAC, vehicle components and smart-factory solutions.
The expansion of AI data centers is creating another opportunity.
Data centers require more than servers.
They also require enormous cooling capacity to remove the heat generated by computing equipment.
That is why LG is positioning HVAC and data-center cooling solutions as future growth businesses.
Smart factories follow similar logic.
Manufacturing technology and automation expertise accumulated inside LG's own factories can potentially be packaged and sold as solutions to other companies.
In the past, LG's core business was primarily about selling well-designed products to consumers.
Increasingly, the opportunity is to sell LG's technology and operational expertise itself to other businesses.
BICs provide a physical place where those capabilities can be brought together for customers.
Beyond One-Off Sales…LG Is Targeting Recurring Revenue
There is another reason LG is expanding its B2B operations.
The revenue model is different.
Traditional consumer electronics transactions often end once a product is sold.
After buying a refrigerator, a consumer may not purchase another one for many years.
B2B solutions can create a different relationship.
Once LG supplies displays or HVAC systems to an enterprise customer, additional business can potentially follow through software, maintenance, system upgrades and operational management.
Hardware becomes the starting point for service revenue.
The direction resembles LG's expansion into subscriptions and platform businesses in consumer appliances.
The broader goal is to move away from a model in which the relationship ends after a single product sale and toward one that maintains a longer connection with customers and generates recurring revenue.
BICs can play an important role in such a business.
Because enterprise contracts can be large, purchasing decisions are often lengthy and complex.
Giving customers a place to validate hardware and software under realistic conditions — and potentially design systems jointly with LG — could improve the company's chances of winning contracts.
There are important limitations, however.
Expanding the number of BICs does not guarantee that LG's B2B transformation will succeed.
Commercial displays, HVAC, automotive components and smart factories each have different market structures and powerful established competitors.
Brand recognition built in consumer electronics alone is not enough to win enterprise customers.
Businesses evaluate not only price but long-term reliability, maintenance capabilities, system compatibility and return on investment.
There is also an analytical limitation: outsiders cannot easily measure how much incremental revenue or profitability individual BICs directly generate.
The reopening of the Singapore BIC therefore does not by itself prove that LG's B2B transformation is succeeding.
Nevertheless, the global expansion of BICs provides a clear indication of where LG is heading.
In a traditional LG store, televisions and refrigerators are the stars.
Inside a BIC, transparent OLED displays, digital boards, cloud software and industry-specific solutions operate together.
The customer has changed as well.
It is no longer simply an individual shopping for a television. It may be a hotel, school, factory, corporation or transportation operator.
LG is therefore attempting to change more than the products it sells.
It is changing whom it sells to, what it sells together and how long it can continue generating revenue from each customer relationship.
Singapore's revamped BIC may be only one location within LG Electronics' global network.
But looking inside provides a glimpse of where a company built on televisions and home appliances is searching for its next decade of growth.
From a company that sells TVs to a company that solves problems for businesses.
That is the direction of LG Electronics' B2B transformation.
