[Mir's Easy Business] America Shuts the Door While Chinese Cars Surge Overseas…Hyundai Faces the ‘China Shock’
An unusual divide is emerging across the global auto industry.
The United States is moving to shut the door on Chinese cars before they have established a meaningful presence in the country. Across the Atlantic and elsewhere, however, Chinese automakers are rapidly expanding their footprint.
BYD, SAIC Motor, Geely, Chery and Leapmotor are no longer merely dominant players in their home market. They are expanding aggressively across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, reshaping the competitive landscape of the global automotive industry.
That helps explain why the U.S. auto industry is urging Congress to erect stronger legal barriers against Chinese vehicles.
According to Reuters, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing major automakers including General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai Motor, Honda and Stellantis, has urged Congress to pass legislation before the end of the year barring Chinese vehicles as well as China-linked automotive software and hardware from the U.S. market.
But China's global automotive offensive cannot simply be explained by the growing competitiveness of Chinese cars.
There is another powerful force pushing Chinese automakers overseas.
Selling more cars at home no longer necessarily means making more money.

▲America Blocks Them Before They Arrive…While Chinese Cars Race Across the World
BYD and Chery vehicles remain rare sights on American roads.
Chinese automakers have effectively been prevented from establishing a meaningful foothold in the U.S. passenger-car market, facing high tariffs as well as restrictions targeting connected vehicles and China-linked automotive software and hardware.
Washington now wants to go even further.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation argues that Chinese automakers are flooding global markets with subsidized vehicles equipped with connected software and hardware and has urged Congress to turn existing restrictions into permanent law.
The U.S. Senate Commerce Committee advanced legislation in July aimed at further tightening barriers against Chinese automakers, although the bill still faces hurdles before final passage.
The restrictions extend well beyond Chinese-branded cars.
Technologies enabling Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular communications and other vehicle connectivity features, along with critical software and hardware, are increasingly being treated as national-security concerns.
Polestar, controlled by China's Geely Holding, has decided to stop selling vehicles in the U.S. beginning with the 2027 model year amid regulatory pressure. Questions have also emerged over whether companies such as Mercedes-Benz, which has significant Chinese shareholders, could be affected.
America's determination to build barriers before Chinese automakers establish themselves reflects what Washington is seeing elsewhere.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, the EU imported 1.106 million new vehicles from China in 2025.
Chinese-made cars accounted for 7% of total EU car sales, 20% of battery-electric vehicle sales and 12% of plug-in electric vehicle sales.
Chinese automakers have already become a force the global industry can no longer ignore.
▲Revenue Rises, Profits Plunge 20%…A 3.6% Profit Ratio Pushes Chinese Automakers Overseas
There is one number that matters more than sales volumes when trying to understand China's automotive expansion.
Profit.
According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, revenue in the country's automobile manufacturing industry reached 6.078 trillion yuan in the first seven months of 2026, up 2.7% year on year.
Yet industry profits fell 20.4% to 216.24 billion yuan during the same period.
A simple calculation puts profits at only about 3.6% of revenue.
In other words, for every 100 yuan in vehicle revenue, Chinese automakers collectively generated roughly 3.6 yuan in profit.
By comparison, the profit-to-revenue ratio for China's industrial enterprises above designated size stood at 5.66% over the same period.
The auto industry's profitability is therefore significantly below the broader industrial average.
The main reason is China's brutal domestic price war.
BYD and other Chinese automakers have repeatedly cut prices to defend or expand market share, forcing competitors to respond with discounts of their own. Sales may rise, but the amount of profit captured by manufacturers is being squeezed.
That makes overseas markets increasingly important.
Instead of sacrificing margins to gain another percentage point of market share at home, Chinese automakers can potentially earn substantially higher returns selling vehicles in Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and other international markets.
Reuters Breakingviews has noted that overseas sales can be far more profitable than domestic business, estimating that BYD earns nearly 10 times more profit on an exported vehicle than on one sold in China.
Beijing has even issued new guidance urging automakers to avoid disorderly price competition abroad while improving quality and after-sales service — another sign of just how rapidly China's automotive expansion is accelerating.
Going global is therefore no longer merely a growth strategy for Chinese automakers.
It is increasingly becoming a survival strategy to escape the collapsing profitability of China's domestic price war.
▲BYD Overseas Sales Surge 134%…Hyundai's Real Battle Is Outside America
BYD offers the clearest example of this transformation.
The Chinese automaker sold 440,293 vehicles worldwide in August 2026, up 17.8% from a year earlier.
Its overseas business grew at an entirely different speed.
BYD shipped 189,466 vehicles overseas in August, a 134.5% year-on-year increase.
That means roughly 43% of its monthly sales came from outside China.
As domestic demand weakens, international markets are rapidly becoming a critical engine supporting BYD's growth.
Chinese automakers are also moving beyond a simple export model.
They are building factories across Europe, Southeast Asia and Latin America, often accompanied by battery and component suppliers. The strategy allows them to reduce tariff exposure and logistics costs while embedding themselves in overseas markets as local manufacturers.
For Hyundai Motor and Kia, this creates a complicated strategic equation.
The harder the United States blocks Chinese automakers, the more protection Hyundai and Kia receive.
As powerful price competitors such as BYD, Geely and Chery remain outside the U.S. market, Hyundai Motor Group can leverage its growing American manufacturing footprint to strengthen its position.
Hyundai itself is among the automakers represented by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.
But the picture changes when viewed globally.
If Chinese automakers remain locked out of America, more of their capital, manufacturing capacity and sales efforts could be redirected toward Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
Those are precisely the markets where Hyundai and Kia will increasingly face Chinese competitors head-on.
And Chinese automakers are no longer competing on price alone.
They have built integrated battery supply chains and dedicated EV platforms while rapidly improving software, autonomous-driving technology and smart cockpits, narrowing the technology and quality gap with established global manufacturers.
The structure of global automotive competition is changing as a result.
What was once primarily a contest among Toyota, Volkswagen, GM, Hyundai Motor Group and other established manufacturers now includes BYD, Geely, Chery and SAIC as increasingly formidable global players.
America's blockade of Chinese vehicles therefore has two faces for Hyundai and Kia.
In the United States, it acts as a protective shield, keeping a powerful group of competitors outside the market.
Outside America, however, it could create a balloon effect, accelerating China's push into the very markets where Hyundai and Kia must compete.
The decisive battleground between Hyundai-Kia and China's emerging auto giants may therefore be neither China nor even the United States.
Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the rest of the global market are becoming the real front lines.
The fact that America wants to shut the door before Chinese cars even arrive is itself an indication of how far China's automotive industry has advanced.
And the industry's roughly 3.6% profit-to-revenue ratio reveals something else.
China's global automotive push will be difficult to stop.
Chinese automakers are no longer driven only by the ambition to conquer global markets.
They are increasingly driven by the reality that going global may be necessary simply to protect their profitability and survive China's brutal domestic price war.
