[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] Samsung’s India R&D Workforce Tops 10,000…Emerging as a Global Development Hub for Galaxy AI and Semiconductor Design
Samsung Electronics is increasingly positioning India as more than a manufacturing base and a consumer market of 1.4 billion people, turning the country into a key pillar of its global research and development network.
According to Indian technology media, Samsung's three R&D centers in India employ more than 10,000 engineers, while about 4,000 additional engineers in Bengaluru are involved in semiconductor architecture-related work.
The role of Samsung's Indian R&D operations has expanded well beyond developing smartphones and appliances for the local market.
The Noida R&D center supports Galaxy smartphones sold in about 129 countries, handling tasks including telecommunications frequency configurations, country-specific settings and localization. Indian engineers have also participated in the development of AI and software features for the Galaxy S26, including Now Nudge, Now Brief, Creative Studio, Call Screening and Direct Voicemail.
The shift suggests that India is evolving from a local-market support base into a global co-development hub within Samsung's product-development network.
The fundamental hardware architecture for Galaxy S and A series devices and foldable smartphones, however, is still largely developed in South Korea. This points to an increasingly defined global division of labor in which Korea designs core product architectures while Indian R&D teams contribute to AI, software, telecommunications optimization and global localization.
More than 10,000 engineers…India R&D moves beyond products for India
Samsung initially built its R&D presence in India largely to develop products and features suited to the local market.
India's diverse languages, telecommunications environments and consumer behavior make localization particularly important for global electronics companies.
Over time, however, the role of Samsung's Indian R&D centers has expanded.
More than 10,000 engineers are now reported to work across the company's three R&D centers in the country.
Their responsibilities are no longer limited to India.
The Noida R&D center supports telecommunications frequency configurations and country-specific settings for Galaxy smartphones sold in approximately 129 countries.
That effectively gives Samsung's Indian R&D organization the role of a global localization hub for its smartphone business.
The shift also reflects a broader change in multinational R&D strategy.
Global companies once established engineering centers in India largely to tap lower-cost technical talent or develop products for the domestic market. Increasingly, Indian engineers are becoming deeply involved in the development of products designed for global markets.
Indian engineers join Galaxy S26 AI development…Korea-India division of labor emerges
The expansion of Samsung's Indian R&D role is particularly visible in Galaxy AI.
According to Indian media reports, Samsung engineers in India participated in developing AI and software features used in the Galaxy S26, including Now Nudge, Now Brief, Creative Studio, Call Screening and Direct Voicemail.
As competition in AI smartphones moves beyond hardware toward user experiences in which devices understand context and proactively provide relevant information, software-development capabilities are becoming increasingly important.
What is particularly notable is the emerging division of labor between South Korea and India.
The basic hardware architecture of Samsung's Galaxy S and A series devices and foldable smartphones is still developed primarily in Korea.
Indian teams, meanwhile, are expanding their roles in AI and software functionality, global telecommunications optimization and market-specific localization.
The emerging structure can be seen as Korea designing the core hardware platform while India helps adapt and expand it for global markets.
If this model continues to deepen, Samsung's smartphone development process could increasingly evolve toward a distributed global R&D structure in which multiple research centers jointly develop a single product.
Beyond smartphones to semiconductors…India emerges as a pillar of Samsung's global R&D
India's expanding role is not limited to smartphones.
Around 4,000 engineers in Bengaluru are reportedly involved in semiconductor architecture-related work.
Given Samsung Electronics' position across memory chips, system semiconductors, smartphones and AI, the growing presence of Indian engineering talent could carry significant strategic implications.
The boundaries between smartphone development and semiconductor development are also becoming increasingly blurred in the AI era.
The performance of on-device AI depends directly on semiconductor capabilities, including application processors, memory and neural processing units.
As a result, collaboration between software teams developing AI smartphone features and engineers working on semiconductor architecture is likely to become increasingly important.
For Samsung, India's role has therefore evolved from manufacturing base to consumer market and now toward a global R&D hub.
The fact that a significant portion of Samsung India's revenue comes from exports, while software exports are also expanding, further illustrates how the nature of the company's Indian operations is changing.
Viewing Samsung's India strategy simply through the lens of selling products to a market of 1.4 billion consumers is increasingly incomplete.
Across smartphones, AI and semiconductors, India is beginning to function as a meaningful pillar of Samsung's global product-development network.
