[미디어펜=편집국]롯데그룹이 우즈베키스탄에서 동박(copper foil) 생산협력 확대를 추진한다. 신동빈 롯데그룹 회장이 샤브카트 미르지요예프 우즈베키스탄 대통령과 만나 동박을 비롯해 개발·관광 분야에서 협력 확대 가능성을 논의하면서 롯데의 중앙아시아 사업 확장 여부가 주목된다.

16일 우즈베키스탄 대통령실과 현지 언론에 따르면 미르지요예프 대통령은 전날 서울에서 신 회장을 만나 롯데그룹과 우즈베키스탄 간 경제협력 확대 방안을 논의했다.

우즈베키스탄 대통령실은 양측이 한국의 첨단기술을 활용한 개발 프로젝트와 함께 동박 생산 분야에서 협력을 확대할 가능성에 대해 의견을 교환했다고 밝혔다.

롯데가 우즈베키스탄에서 동박 생산을 실제 사업화할 경우 그룹의 중앙아시아 사업 영역이 기존 화학·관광 등을 넘어 소재 분야까지 확대될 가능성이 있다.

다만 현재 공개된 우즈베키스탄 정부 자료에는 투자금액이나 생산능력, 공장 후보지, 착공·양산 일정 등 구체적인 사업계획은 포함되지 않았다.

Lotte Group is exploring expanded cooperation with Uzbekistan in copper foil production following a meeting between Chairman Shin Dong-bin and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

According to the Uzbek presidential office and local media, President Mirziyoyev met Shin in Seoul to discuss ways to broaden economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Lotte Group.

The two sides discussed prospects for expanding cooperation in copper foil production as well as development projects involving advanced Korean technologies.

If the discussions lead to an actual production project, Lotte could potentially expand its Central Asian business portfolio beyond its existing activities into the materials sector.

However, no specific details have been disclosed regarding investment size, production capacity, a potential plant location or a construction and production timetable.

이번 회동에서 가장 눈에 띄는 부분은 우즈베키스탄 대통령실이 협력 분야로 ‘동박 생산’을 구체적으로 명시했다는 점이다.

동박은 구리를 얇게 가공한 소재로 전자·전기산업에서 폭넓게 사용된다. 특히 고성능 동박은 리튬이온 배터리의 음극 집전체 등에 사용되면서 전기차 배터리 핵심 소재 가운데 하나로 자리 잡았다.

롯데그룹에는 동박 사업을 주력으로 하는 롯데에너지머티리얼즈가 있다. 롯데에너지머티리얼즈는 국내와 말레이시아 등을 기반으로 동박 사업을 전개하고 있다.

이에 따라 이번 우즈베키스탄의 동박 생산 협력 논의가 향후 롯데에너지머티리얼즈의 사업과 연결될지 관심이 모인다.

다만 우즈베키스탄 대통령실은 이번 발표에서 롯데에너지머티리얼즈를 사업 주체로 특정하지 않았다. 생산을 논의한 동박의 구체적인 용도 역시 밝히지 않았다.

따라서 현 단계에서 이를 ‘롯데에너지머티리얼즈의 우즈베키스탄 배터리용 동박공장 투자’로 해석하는 것은 이르다.

The most notable part of the meeting was the Uzbek presidential office's explicit reference to copper foil production as an area for potential cooperation.

Copper foil is a thin copper material widely used across the electrical and electronics industries. High-performance copper foil is also used as an anode current collector in lithium-ion batteries, making it an important material for electric vehicle batteries.

Lotte Group owns Lotte Energy Materials, a major copper foil producer with manufacturing operations in South Korea and Malaysia.

That raises interest in whether the discussions in Uzbekistan could eventually involve Lotte Energy Materials.

However, the Uzbek presidential office did not identify Lotte Energy Materials as the company responsible for the proposed cooperation. Nor did it specify the intended application of the copper foil.

It would therefore be premature to describe the talks as a confirmed investment by Lotte Energy Materials in an EV battery copper foil plant in Uzbekistan.

우즈베키스탄이 한국 기업과 동박 생산을 논의한 것은 이번이 처음이 아니다.

SKC의 동박사업 투자사인 SK넥실리스는 앞서 우즈베키스탄 정부와 현지 동박 생산 가능성을 논의한 바 있다.

이에 따라 롯데와 우즈베키스탄의 이번 논의가 구체적인 투자 프로젝트로 발전할 경우 한국 동박업계의 중앙아시아 생산거점 전략이라는 측면에서도 주목할 만하다.

우즈베키스탄은 풍부한 광물자원과 상대적으로 경쟁력 있는 에너지 비용을 기반으로 한국 기업의 소재·부품 투자를 유치하려 하고 있다. 최근에는 한국 기업 및 연구기관과 핵심광물 가공과 희토류 자성소재, 분말야금 등 첨단소재 분야 협력도 확대하고 있다.

이번 회동에서는 동박 이외의 사업도 논의됐다.

양측은 한국의 첨단기술을 활용한 개발 프로젝트를 비롯해 우즈베키스탄 관광센터 운영에 롯데가 참여하고 호텔 서비스 수준을 높이는 방안 등을 검토했다.

또 현재 추진 중이거나 논의되는 공동 프로젝트의 진행상황을 지속적으로 점검하기 위한 공동 워킹그룹을 구성하기로 했다.

결국 관건은 ‘동박 생산 협력’이라는 이번 정상급 논의가 실제 투자 프로젝트로 발전하느냐다.

사업 주체와 투자규모, 생산능력, 입지 등이 구체화될 경우 롯데의 우즈베키스탄 사업은 기존 영역을 넘어 첨단소재까지 확장되는 새로운 전환점을 맞을 수 있다.

Lotte is not the first Korean company to discuss copper foil production in Uzbekistan.

SK nexilis, SKC's copper foil investment company, has previously discussed the possibility of establishing local copper foil production with the Uzbek government.

If Lotte's latest discussions develop into a concrete investment project, Uzbekistan could therefore attract renewed attention as a potential Central Asian production base for Korean copper foil companies.

Uzbekistan has been seeking Korean investment in materials and components while expanding cooperation in critical-mineral processing, magnetic materials and powder metallurgy.

The Shin-Mirziyoyev meeting also covered areas beyond copper foil. The two sides discussed development projects utilizing advanced Korean technologies, Lotte's potential participation in operating tourism centers and ways to improve hotel service standards.

They also agreed to establish a joint working group to regularly review the progress of ongoing and proposed projects.

The key question is whether the latest high-level discussion over copper foil production develops into a concrete investment project.

If details such as the project operator, investment size, production capacity and location emerge, the initiative could mark a new stage in Lotte's business expansion in Uzbekistan.
