[Mir's Easy Business] Why Has European Shipping Company CLdN Ordered 16 Ships From HD Hyundai Over the Past Decade?

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has recently secured a KRW 336.2 billion order for two RoRo vessels from a European shipping company.

The customer was not identified in the Korean disclosure.

International shipping sources, however, identify the buyer as CLdN, a major European short-sea RoRo operator.

The latest vessels will be the 15th and 16th ships CLdN has ordered from HD Hyundai over the past decade.

The long-running partnership offers an interesting example of how European shipping companies are seeking vessels that can carry more cargo while consuming less fuel.

From 5,000 to 8,000 and 8,400 Lane Metres

CLdN specializes in short-sea transportation of trailers, vehicles and containers across Europe.

Over the past decade, the company has invested heavily in larger and more fuel-efficient RoRo vessels.

Its newer fleet includes six H5-class vessels with 5,000 lane metres of cargo capacity, two G9 vessels with 8,000 lane metres and two G9e hybrid vessels with 8,400 lane metres.

CLdN says all of these ships were built by its South Korean shipbuilding partner, HD Hyundai.

The G9e vessels delivered in 2025 marked another technological step forward, incorporating large shaft generators while being designed to accommodate future fuels, fuel cells and battery technology.

The relationship therefore goes beyond repeated orders for identical vessels.

CLdN and HD Hyundai have progressively developed larger and more efficient ships as the European operator modernizes its fleet.

34% More Cargo Space With Similar Fuel Consumption

The latest vessels introduce another step in the partnership.

Each ship will offer 6,700 lane metres of cargo capacity, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2028 and delivery planned for mid-2029.

The ships are smaller than CLdN's 8,400-lane-metre G9e vessels because they are designed for a different operational role.

Compared with the existing 5,000-lane-metre class, the new ships will have an additional deck and a configuration optimized for trailer cargo.

Wide ramps will provide direct access to upper decks, helping reduce loading and unloading times.

Cargo capacity rises by about 34% compared with the 5,000-lane-metre vessels.

Yet CLdN expects the new ships to consume roughly the same amount of fuel.

As a result, fuel efficiency per tonne-kilometre is expected to improve by 30% to 40%.

LNG Today, Batteries Tomorrow

The new vessels will be capable of operating on conventional marine diesel or LNG.

They will also reserve space for future battery installations and larger generators connected to electric shafts.

This approach extends a strategy already developed by CLdN and HD Hyundai.

Their earlier G9e vessels combined dual-fuel engines with electric propulsion systems and were designed to accommodate future fuels, fuel cells and batteries.

For vessels expected to operate for decades, future-proofing can reduce the cost and complexity of adapting to new environmental regulations and propulsion technologies.

Why 16 Ships From HD Hyundai?

Why has CLdN continued ordering ships from HD Hyundai?

There is no public statement from CLdN identifying a single reason such as price, delivery slots or one particular technology.

The evolution of the vessels, however, illustrates the nature of the relationship.

The partnership has progressed from 5,000-lane-metre LNG-capable vessels to 8,000-lane-metre ships, then to 8,400-lane-metre hybrids and now to a 6,700-lane-metre design optimized for trailer operations.

CLdN has invested about €750 million in new RoRo vessels over the past decade as part of a broader strategy to increase vessel size and improve carbon efficiency.

Throughout that modernization program, HD Hyundai has served not only as a shipbuilder but also as a partner in implementing new vessel designs and propulsion technologies.

The latest order for the 15th and 16th vessels continues that decade-long relationship.
