[Mir's Global Radar] From EVs to Military Drones: U.S. Invests Up to $75 Million in Korean-Operated Battery Production Line

The U.S. government is providing up to $75 million to convert an existing electric-vehicle battery production line operated by a major South Korean manufacturer in the United States into a high-energy-density battery production facility for drones.

Amprius Technologies said it secured the funding from the U.S. Department of Defense to expand domestic production capacity for high-energy-density battery cells.

The overall project is expected to cost approximately $100 million.

Amprius identified its manufacturing partner only as a "major South Korean manufacturer" and did not disclose the company's name.

The project will convert an existing U.S. EV battery production line to manufacture Amprius SiCore cells.

Once completed, the facility is expected to have annual production capacity of up to 12 million cells, with the new capacity targeted to come online in early 2028.

Why Convert an EV Battery Line Into Drone Battery Production?

One of the most notable aspects of the project is that Amprius will not build an entirely new battery factory from scratch.

Instead, an existing EV battery production line in the United States will be converted to manufacture high-energy-density SiCore cells.

EVs and drones require batteries with different performance priorities.

For electric vehicles, driving range, cost, cycle life and charging speed are major considerations.

For drones, however, energy density is particularly important because aircraft must carry as much energy as possible while minimizing weight.

Higher energy density can help increase flight endurance or payload capacity.

Amprius plans for the cells produced under the project to comply with U.S. National Defense Authorization Act supply-chain requirements and support Group 1, 2 and 3 unmanned aircraft systems and other defense applications.

Up to $75 Million in Pentagon Support

The total project cost is estimated at approximately $100 million, while the U.S. Department of Defense will provide up to $75 million in funding.

If fully awarded, the government contribution would represent as much as 75% of the project's estimated cost.

Amprius expects the converted production line to reach annual capacity of up to 12 million cells, with production capacity targeted for early 2028.

The investment reflects the growing importance of securing a domestic supply of high-energy-density batteries for U.S. unmanned aircraft systems.

Using an existing EV battery production line could also allow production capacity to be established more quickly than constructing an entirely new facility.

Who Is the South Korean Manufacturer?

The identity of the South Korean manufacturing partner remains undisclosed.

Amprius has stated only that the project will use an existing U.S. EV battery production line operated by a "major South Korean manufacturer."

The company's name and the location of the facility have not been publicly identified.

It would therefore be premature to attribute the project to LG Energy Solution, SK On, Samsung SDI or any other specific Korean battery manufacturer without additional evidence.

Amprius already works with manufacturing partners in South Korea as part of its global production strategy, but publicly available information does not establish that any of those existing partners operates the U.S. line involved in the new Defense Department-backed project.

The key development is therefore the industrial shift itself: an EV-oriented battery production line operated by a Korean manufacturer in the United States is being repurposed to support America's military-drone battery supply chain.

The next major pieces of information to watch are the identity of the Korean manufacturer and the location of the U.S. facility.
