[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] Is the AI Boom Making Galaxy Phones More Expensive?…S26 Prices Rise Up to 17% in India

Samsung Galaxy S26 Prices Rise Up to 17% in India…All Models Now Cost More Than 100,000 Rupees.

HBM’s Share of DRAM Wafer Capacity Expected to Rise From 20% to Nearly 30% Next Year.

AI-Driven HBM Expansion Squeezes Conventional Memory Supply…Could Smartphone Costs Be Next?

Is the artificial intelligence (AI) boom starting to push up smartphone prices as well?

Samsung Electronics has raised prices for its Galaxy S26 series in India by as much as 17%.

The most notable increase is for the base model. The Galaxy S26 256GB now costs 102,999 rupees, up 15,000 rupees from 87,999 rupees, an increase of roughly 17%.

The Galaxy S26+ 256GB has risen from 119,999 rupees to 134,999 rupees, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra 256GB has increased from 139,999 rupees to 154,999 rupees.

The top-end Galaxy S26 Ultra 1TB now costs as much as 214,999 rupees.

As a result, every Galaxy S26 model sold in India now carries a price tag above 100,000 rupees.

What makes the timing particularly interesting is what is happening in the global memory market.

Demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI servers is surging, intensifying competition between HBM and conventional DRAM for semiconductor manufacturing capacity.

A Samsung Electronics executive recently said HBM currently accounts for around 20% of global DRAM wafer capacity and that the share is expected to rise to nearly 30% next year.

The explosion in memory demand that began in AI data centers could therefore increasingly affect the cost of consumer electronics such as smartphones.

AI Servers Are Devouring Memory…HBM Could Take Nearly 30% of DRAM Capacity

Why should AI servers have anything to do with smartphone prices?

The key is HBM.

HBM is a type of high-performance memory used in AI accelerators.

Put simply, instead of arranging conventional DRAM chips side by side, HBM stacks multiple memory dies vertically so that massive amounts of data can be transferred quickly and simultaneously.

HBM has become essential for improving the performance of AI accelerators such as those made by Nvidia.

The problem is that as more HBM is produced, manufacturing capacity available for conventional DRAM can come under pressure.

Samsung Electronics Vice President Kim Tae-woo recently explained that HBM and conventional DRAM compete for wafer capacity, forecasting that HBM’s share could rise from around 20% today to nearly 30% next year.

Imagine a semiconductor plant’s total production capacity as 100.

If roughly 20 was previously allocated to HBM for AI applications, that figure could soon approach 30.

Of course, HBM and conventional DRAM cannot be compared on a simple one-to-one basis because their manufacturing processes and wafer requirements differ.

Still, the expansion of HBM production can put pressure on the supply capacity available for conventional DRAM.

For the memory chips used in smartphones and PCs, AI has effectively become a new competitor for semiconductor production capacity.

Galaxy S26 Base Model Jumps 17%…Rising Memory and Mainboard Costs Cited

Against this backdrop, Galaxy S26 prices have actually increased in India.

According to local reports, Samsung Electronics raised prices for the Galaxy S26 series in India starting September 23.

The base 256GB model increased by about 17%, from 87,999 rupees to 102,999 rupees.

Major Galaxy S26+ and S26 Ultra models also rose by around 15,000 rupees each.

Industry sources in India have pointed to rising prices for key electronic components, including memory chips and mainboards, as a factor behind the increases.

There is, however, an important caveat.

Samsung Electronics has not officially said that the price increases in India were caused by higher memory prices.

Local media outlets asked Samsung about the reasons for the increases, but the company did not provide a separate response.

It would therefore be inaccurate to conclude that “Galaxy S26 prices rose 17% because HBM production increased.”

Nevertheless, the fact that the two developments are occurring at the same time is worth watching.

Demand for AI-focused HBM is growing rapidly, prompting memory manufacturers to expand HBM capacity, while prices for conventional memory and cost pressures on electronics manufacturers are also rising.

Is the AI Boom’s Bill Reaching Smartphones?…HBM and Conventional DRAM Fight for Wafer Capacity

Until now, the AI boom has largely been seen as good news for the semiconductor industry.

The more Nvidia AI accelerators are sold, the greater the demand for HBM produced by memory manufacturers such as SK hynix and Samsung Electronics.

HBM also commands higher prices and offers better profitability than conventional memory.

Memory manufacturers therefore have a strong incentive to increase HBM production wherever possible.

But semiconductor manufacturing capacity is not unlimited.

Allocating more wafers and advanced manufacturing capacity to HBM can reduce the capacity available for conventional DRAM.

If supply tightens while demand remains strong, prices can rise.

That burden can then be passed on to manufacturers of smartphones, PCs and servers that rely on memory chips.

Eventually, consumers could feel the impact through higher prices for electronic devices.

In other words, the explosive growth of the AI industry could create a “butterfly effect,” moving prices in markets that at first glance appear far removed from AI data centers.

The Other Side of the AI Boom…Smartphone and PC Prices Are the Next Thing to Watch

The Galaxy S26 price increase has occurred in a single market: India.

That alone does not mean smartphone prices around the world will rise simultaneously.

Exchange rates, distribution costs, marketing strategies and country-specific taxes are among the many factors that determine smartphone prices.

The structural shift taking place in the memory market, however, is a separate issue.

As AI servers consume increasing amounts of HBM and memory manufacturers expand HBM production, competition with conventional DRAM for manufacturing capacity could intensify.

In the past, smartphones and PCs were among the major drivers of semiconductor demand.

Now AI data centers are increasingly competing for the industry’s most expensive memory products and advanced manufacturing capacity.

That is why the AI boom cannot be understood simply by looking at Nvidia’s GPU sales or the revenue generated by HBM.

We also need to watch not only how much electricity and how many data centers AI requires, but how much semiconductor manufacturing capacity it consumes.

The costs may surface in unexpected places.

Galaxy S26 prices surpassing 100,000 rupees in India could be one signal of how these changes may eventually reach consumer markets.

The memory battle of the AI era is no longer confined to data centers.

It could ultimately affect the price of the smartphone in our hands.
