[Mir's Global Radar] South Korea's Biofx Launches First Overseas Ginseng Farming Venture in Hong Kong
Partnership with Farm66 targets local hydroponic ginseng production and sales
Korean cultivation expertise to meet Hong Kong smart farming technology as Asian expansion is explored
South Korean hydroponic ginseng company Biofx is entering its first overseas farming venture through a partnership with Hong Kong-based smart farming company Farm66. The project aims to combine Korean ginseng cultivation expertise with Hong Kong's urban agricultural infrastructure to produce and sell ginseng locally.
According to a South China Morning Post report published on October 21, Seoul-based Biofx signed an agreement with Farm66 on October 15 to pursue ginseng cultivation and sales in Hong Kong. The partnership marks Biofx's first expansion of its hydroponic ginseng business beyond South Korea.
The initiative represents a shift from the conventional export model for Korean ginseng products toward cultivating the crop closer to overseas consumers. The partners intend to target Hong Kong's premium dining market while exploring opportunities for broader expansion across Asia.
Korean Ginseng Cultivation Meets Hong Kong Smart Farming
The partnership aims to combine Biofx's Korean ginseng cultivation expertise with Farm66's urban farming infrastructure in Hong Kong.
Hydroponics allows crops to grow in nutrient-rich water rather than soil. By controlling lighting, temperature and other environmental conditions, the method can support agricultural production in limited urban spaces.
Farm66 is a Hong Kong-based company specializing in hydroponic and vertical farming technologies. According to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the company was established in 2013 and has developed proprietary systems, including multi-layer vertical planting structures and indoor hydroponic farming solutions.
Under the proposed collaboration, Biofx will contribute its ginseng cultivation expertise while Farm66 will provide local farming infrastructure and smart farming capabilities.
The partners intend to cultivate Korean ginseng in Hong Kong and supply it to local consumers and restaurants. However, the farming site has not yet been secured, and commercial production has not begun.
Targeting Hong Kong's Premium Dining Market
Hong Kong's premium dining sector was a key factor behind Biofx's decision to establish its first overseas operation in the city.
According to the SCMP, Biofx founder and CEO Jack Kwon considered several markets, including Japan, Singapore and Vietnam, before choosing Hong Kong because of its position in Asia's fine-dining industry.
Biofx plans to cultivate fresh ginseng locally and supply it to restaurants and consumers in Hong Kong. The strategy seeks to position ginseng as a premium culinary ingredient rather than solely as a traditional health-related product.
The company is also exploring commercial uses for ginseng leaves and stems in addition to the roots. Such products could expand the ways in which ginseng is used and consumed.
If local production begins, the partnership could test a business model based on growing and supplying Korean ginseng closer to overseas consumers rather than shipping the crop from South Korea.
Specific production volumes, selling prices and supply contract values have not been disclosed.
