[Mir's Money Move] Retail Investors Pull Back as Insurers Commit More: The Two Faces of US Private Credit

Two contrasting capital flows are emerging in the US private credit market. Investors in certain non-traded funds are seeking to withdraw their money, while institutional investors, including pension funds and insurers, continue to commit long-term capital to alternative asset managers.

Private credit provides financing directly to companies outside traditional bank lending. As the market expanded beyond institutional investors, liquidity pressures began to surface in funds that offer periodic redemptions while holding loans that cannot readily be sold for cash.

At the same time, Japan's Nippon Life has announced plans to allocate approximately ¥1.5 trillion to Blackstone over five years, highlighting continued institutional demand for private and structured credit.

The divergence reflects a fundamental difference in investment horizons, liquidity needs and risk tolerance.

$19.1 Billion Requested, $7.6 Billion Returned

Liquidity pressures in US private credit are becoming visible in redemption data.

According to PitchBook's October 12 analysis, 27 non-traded business development companies raised $3.3 billion through new share issuance in the second quarter of 2026, while paying $8.1 billion to redeeming shareholders.

The resulting $4.8 billion net outflow marked the first quarter since at least 2022 in which redemptions exceeded new subscriptions across the funds studied.

Among 12 large non-traded private credit BDCs, investors requested approximately $19.1 billion in withdrawals, but the funds paid out about $7.6 billion.

The gap reflects the underlying structure of private credit. Fund managers provide multi-year loans to companies, while investors may seek liquidity through periodic redemption programs. When requests exceed available liquidity, funds can limit repurchases under their governing terms.

Blackstone's BCRED received approximately $6.7 billion in redemption requests during the second quarter and paid out roughly $3.2 billion. Blue Owl Credit Income received requests of about $3.6 billion and paid approximately $964 million.

The central issue is therefore not simply credit performance. It is the mismatch between the long duration of private loans and investors' expectations of periodic access to cash.

Institutional Capital Continues to Flow

Private credit managers are facing redemption pressure in some products while continuing to attract institutional capital.

Blue Owl Capital reported $10.2 billion in new equity fundraising for the third quarter of 2026. Institutional investors accounted for $8.3 billion, compared with $1.9 billion raised through private wealth channels.

Institutional capital represented approximately 81% of the company's new equity fundraising. Blue Owl's total assets under management reached about $329.9 billion at the end of September, while total new capital commitments, including non-equity commitments, amounted to $12.6 billion.

The figures illustrate an important distinction. Redemption demand in certain non-traded credit funds does not necessarily mean that all investors are abandoning private markets.

Institutional fundraising also spans multiple strategies, including investment-grade credit, real assets and infrastructure. It cannot be treated entirely as new capital entering direct lending.

For asset managers, however, long-term institutional commitments provide a more stable funding base. They can help managers align investment horizons with the maturities of underlying loans, rather than responding to repeated short-term redemption demands.

The key competitive advantage is not simply the amount of capital raised, but how long that capital can remain invested.

Why Japanese Insurance Money Is Heading to Blackstone

Insurance companies are among the investors capable of providing long-duration capital to private credit markets.

On June 3, Nippon Life announced a strategic partnership with Blackstone, under which the Japanese insurer plans to allocate approximately ¥1.5 trillion in new capital over five years to investment-grade private credit and structured credit strategies.

Insurers operate with investment horizons that differ fundamentally from those of many individual investors. They collect premiums, manage assets over long periods and prepare to meet future policyholder obligations.

Private and structured credit can provide contractual income streams that support these objectives, provided that credit risk, liquidity and asset-liability matching are carefully managed.

The Nippon Life–Blackstone partnership also covers cooperation involving approximately a dozen Japanese real estate properties and exchanges of investment professionals.

For Nippon Life, the arrangement offers access to specialized investment capabilities. For Blackstone, it provides the prospect of a long-term institutional relationship and additional capital to manage.

The ¥1.5 trillion figure represents a planned allocation over five years, not an amount already invested. The companies have not publicly identified the ultimate borrowers or disclosed the amount deployed to date.

Japan Post Insurance has also established a strategic partnership with KKR and Global Atlantic, indicating broader interest among Japanese insurers in overseas alternative investment platforms.

The distinction between investors is increasingly important. Individuals in periodically redeemable funds may prioritize access to cash, while insurers can seek income over longer horizons.

For private credit managers, long-term commitments can provide greater stability. For borrowing companies, they offer financing outside the banking system. Credit losses, however, ultimately affect the investors exposed to the underlying loans.

The changing private credit market is therefore not simply a story of money leaving or entering. It is a story of capital being divided according to how long investors can afford to wait.

For Korean financial institutions and pension funds investing in overseas private credit, the lesson is equally relevant: returns must be assessed alongside liquidity terms, loan maturities and the timing of future cash obligations.

In private credit, the ability to secure patient capital is becoming as important as the ability to raise capital itself.
