[Mir’s Money Move]Record $74 Billion Flows Into US Bond ETFs, but Investors Shun Long-Term Treasuries

Investors poured a record $74 billion into US-listed bond exchange-traded funds in October 2026, extending a six-month streak of monthly inflows exceeding $50 billion. Yet the money was far from evenly distributed across the bond market.

According to State Street Investment Management, short-term government bond ETFs attracted $7.145 billion, while funds holding government bonds with maturities longer than 10 years received just $287 million. The divergence highlights investors' preference for bond income without taking on excessive long-term interest-rate risk.

Investors Buy Bonds but Avoid Long-Term Interest-Rate Risk

The record inflows followed a sharp rebound in US bonds. According to State Street, broad core bonds gained more than 2.4% in October after recording their weakest monthly performance in more than four years in the preceding month.

However, investors did not allocate their money evenly across maturities.

Short-term government bond ETFs attracted $7.145 billion, compared with $4.942 billion for intermediate-term government bond ETFs and just $287 million for long-term government bond ETFs.

The difference reflects the importance of duration risk. Bond prices generally rise when market yields fall and decline when yields increase. Longer-duration bonds tend to experience larger price movements in response to the same change in interest rates.

Short-term Treasury ETFs allow investors to earn bond income with comparatively limited sensitivity to long-term interest-rate movements.

State Street interpreted the flows as evidence that investors were seeking to manage duration exposure in an environment where interest rates could remain elevated for longer.

The result was not a retreat from bonds, but a more selective allocation of capital within the bond market.

Corporate Bonds Attract More Money Than Long-Term Treasuries

Investors' reluctance to extend duration did not translate into a broad rejection of credit risk.

Investment-grade corporate bond ETFs attracted $9.327 billion in October, more than 32 times the inflows into long-term government bond ETFs.

High-yield corporate bond ETFs received $2.022 billion, while inflation-protected bond ETFs gathered $2.698 billion.

The pattern points to three distinct objectives: limiting sensitivity to long-term interest rates, earning additional income from corporate credit, and protecting portfolios against persistent inflation.

Municipal bond ETFs also recorded substantial inflows of $21.174 billion, reflecting another important source of demand within the US fixed income market.

Taken together, the figures suggest that investors were not making a single directional bet on falling interest rates. Instead, they were allocating capital among different sources of bond income and risk.

US Equities Draw Capital While Bond Investors Favor Shorter Duration

A similar reallocation of capital was visible in equity ETFs.

According to State Street, US equity ETFs attracted $112.348 billion in October, accounting for approximately 80% of total equity ETF inflows.

The figures indicate that investors were directing substantial capital toward US equities while taking a more selective approach to interest-rate exposure in fixed income.

For Korean investors, the distinction matters because US equity ETFs, long-term Treasury ETFs and short-term bond ETFs have fundamentally different return drivers.

An S&P 500 ETF is primarily exposed to corporate earnings and stock valuations. A long-term Treasury ETF is more sensitive to changes in long-term interest rates, while short-term bond ETFs generally experience smaller price fluctuations from rate movements.

Currency exposure is another important factor. For Korean-listed ETFs investing in US assets, the impact of changes in the won-dollar exchange rate depends partly on whether the fund employs currency hedging.

The October data do not imply that long-term Treasury bonds have lost their investment appeal. They show that investors were increasingly selective about the risks they were willing to accept.

The central message of October's ETF flows is clear: capital is continuing to move into both US equities and bonds, but investors are distinguishing carefully between growth exposure, credit risk and interest-rate sensitivity.
