[Mir’s Easy-to-Understand Business] One in Every Three Dollars Invested in Mexico’s Auto Industry Comes From Korea…10 Times China’s Share, Closing In on the U.S.
About one out of every three dollars in country-identified direct investment announced for Mexico's automotive industry in the first half of 2026 came from South Korean companies.
As Mexico strengthens its position as a major manufacturing base next to the massive U.S. automobile market, South Korean companies have emerged as the second-largest source of automotive investment after the United States.
South Korean investment was also approximately 10 times larger than Chinese investment under the same dataset.
The trend extends beyond automaker Kia to suppliers including DH Autoware, LS Cable & System and LT Precision, covering automotive electronics, high-voltage cables and electric-vehicle components. It suggests that an increasingly broad segment of South Korea's automotive supply chain is establishing production capacity in Mexico.
According to data compiled by Mexican automotive industry publication Cluster Industrial, 100 automotive investment projects totaling approximately $5.02 billion were announced in Mexico during the first half of 2026.
Among direct investments for which the country of origin was identified, U.S. companies accounted for approximately $1.53 billion, or 39.1%.
South Korea followed closely.
Investment by South Korean companies totaled approximately $1.22 billion, representing 31.3%. The gap between U.S. and South Korean investment was only about $300 million.
Chinese investment, by comparison, totaled approximately $123 million, representing 3.1%.
On the same basis, South Korean automotive investment in Mexico was roughly 10 times larger than Chinese investment.
The figures should not be confused with Mexico's overall foreign direct investment statistics. They refer specifically to country-identified direct investment among automotive projects compiled by Cluster Industrial for the first half of 2026.
Even with that qualification, the data illustrate the growing importance of Mexico as a North American production hub for South Korea's automotive industry.
Not Just Kia: Korea's Electronics, Cable and EV Parts Supply Chain Moves to Mexico
A closer look at South Korea's approximately $1.22 billion investment reveals a more significant trend.
The total is not simply the result of one automaker making a large investment. Korean companies representing multiple layers of the automotive supply chain are expanding in Mexico.
Kia is the most prominent example.
The Mexican industry data include a roughly $600 million Kia Mexico project involving electric-vehicle production capabilities and related energy infrastructure.
Automotive electronics company DH Autoware accounts for another approximately $167 million, aimed at expanding local manufacturing capacity for automotive electronic components.
LS Cable & System is associated with an investment of approximately $157 million. The project focuses on expanding Mexican production of cables used in conventional vehicles as well as high-voltage cables required for electric vehicles.
LT Precision is also included with an investment of approximately $143 million involving production capabilities for precision components related to EV batteries.
The trend is easier to understand by considering how a vehicle is manufactured.
When Kia produces vehicles in Mexico, sourcing electronics, wiring, high-voltage cables and battery-related components from nearby facilities can reduce transportation costs and shorten supply chains.
This is a classic pattern in the automotive industry: once an assembly plant expands, suppliers tend to establish or enlarge production facilities nearby.
South Korea's overseas automotive investment was once centered primarily on assembly plants operated by Hyundai Motor and Kia. As vehicles become increasingly electric and software-driven, however, investment is spreading across cables, electronics and battery-related components.
Why Mexico? Because the United States Is Next Door
The easiest way to understand why Korean companies are investing in Mexico is to look at a map.
The United States sits directly to Mexico's north.
Vehicles and components manufactured in Mexico can be transported overland into one of the world's largest automobile markets.
Compared with shipping products across the Pacific from South Korea, locating production in Mexico can significantly reduce the distance between factories and North American customers.
The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, is another important factor underpinning the integrated North American automotive supply chain.
Manufacturing within the region and satisfying applicable rules of origin can provide advantages when accessing the broader North American market.
Mexico's strategic importance has also increased as the United States seeks to restructure supply chains for strategic industries including automobiles, steel, batteries and semiconductors.
For South Korean companies, building factories directly in the United States is therefore not the only option.
For certain products, establishing production in Mexico can provide a platform for supplying customers across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Proximity is particularly important for automotive components because manufacturers increasingly rely on just-in-time production.
An automobile assembly line can be disrupted if even a single critical component fails to arrive on schedule.
As automakers expand their North American manufacturing bases, suppliers therefore have strong incentives to establish production facilities close to their customers.
Ultimately, one of the biggest attractions of Mexico for South Korean automotive companies is not simply the Mexican market itself, but the enormous North American automotive market located just beyond its northern border.
South Korea 31.3%, China 3.1%: Why Is the Gap So Large?
One of the most striking figures in the dataset is the difference between South Korean and Chinese investment.
South Korea accounted for 31.3%, compared with China's 3.1%.
Under the same automotive investment dataset, South Korean investment was therefore approximately 10 times larger than Chinese investment.
This should not be interpreted to mean that South Korea's automotive industry is 10 times more competitive than China's.
Chinese automakers continue to pursue expansion in Mexico, while companies including BYD have explored broader sales networks and potential local manufacturing opportunities.
One factor affecting investment decisions is the changing North American trade environment.
U.S. policymakers have expressed concerns that Chinese investment in Mexico could potentially provide an indirect route into the U.S. market. South Korea, meanwhile, is a major U.S. ally whose companies, led by Hyundai Motor and Kia, have already established substantial manufacturing operations across North America.
Korean suppliers investing in Mexico can also connect with existing supply chains serving Hyundai Motor, Kia and other global automakers.
Mexico's rapid growth in electrification-related investment provides another opportunity.
According to Cluster Industrial, announced investment related to automotive electrification reached approximately $2.16 billion during the first half of 2026, an increase of 291% from the same period a year earlier.
As vehicles shift from internal-combustion engines to electric powertrains, the components they require also change.
The importance of engines and transmissions declines, while demand increases for high-voltage cables, power electronics, battery components and thermal-management systems.
South Korea's established industrial capabilities in batteries, automotive electronics and electrical equipment could therefore align closely with Mexico's expanding investment in vehicle electrification.
The first-half 2026 figures represent only one period and should not be treated as a permanent market ranking.
Nevertheless, the gap between the United States at 39.1%, South Korea at 31.3% and China at 3.1% illustrates Mexico's growing role in the restructuring of North America's automotive supply chain.
South Korean companies are increasingly participating not through one or two automakers alone, but across a broader supply chain spanning automotive electronics, cables and EV components.
