[Mir’s Business Explained] Cheaper Medicines Must Arrive on Time: K-Biotech’s Supply Chain Challenge

Lower prices can help expand a market. But the calculation changes when medicines fail to arrive in time for treatment. In the US biosimilar market, supply reliability is becoming an important purchasing consideration alongside price. For Korean companies, competitiveness may increasingly depend on their ability to connect production, inventory and distribution.

Samsung Bioepis’ announcement of its Fourth Quarter 2026 US Biosimilar Market Report, released on October 22, highlighted the importance of product availability and reliable fulfillment. An interview featured in the report described a wholesaler experiencing short or restricted supply affecting roughly a quarter or more of its biosimilar portfolio on a given day.

For healthcare providers, purchasing an affordable medicine and securing the medicine needed for scheduled treatment are closely connected. Supply disruptions can require alternative sourcing, inventory adjustments and, potentially, changes to treatment schedules. These demands can erode the savings achieved through a lower purchase price.

A buyer’s costs therefore extend beyond the medicine itself. When products are similarly priced, dependable fulfillment can give a supplier an advantage in retaining business.

Manufacturers face their own trade-off. Production flexibility, local inventory and distribution management require spending. Larger inventories tie up cash and increase storage, logistics and expiry-management costs. That spending must generate value through repeat orders and stronger customer relationships.

This provides another way to assess Korean biosimilar companies, including Samsung Bioepis and Celltrion, as they compete in the United States. Regulatory approvals and launch prices help establish market access. Sustained sales also require the ability to fulfill orders and respond to changing demand.

A local factory alone does not guarantee reliable supply. Production planning, quality management, shipment schedules, inventory and distributor responsiveness must work together.

Price competition remains central to biosimilars. Turning that competition into lasting revenue also requires dependable supply. The question for K-biotech is how consistently it can deliver medicines at a commercially sustainable price.
