[Mir's Easy-to-Understand Business] POSCO's Lithium Business Is Finally Making Money…But Fitch Warns of a 2028 Test

After a prolonged downturn, the lithium market is showing signs of life again. A sharp rebound in Chinese lithium carbonate prices has raised expectations that producers battered by the previous price collapse could finally see their earnings recover.

Few Korean companies are as exposed to this change as POSCO Group.

POSCO has spent years investing in direct lithium production from Argentine brines. Profitability at its local lithium operations has recently begun improving, while the group is also pursuing additional capacity and new customers.

At first glance, the lithium cycle POSCO has been waiting for may finally have arrived.

But BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions, has delivered a warning.

While sharply raising its lithium price forecast for this year, BMI argues that the current rally has already moved beyond what supply-and-demand fundamentals justify. It expects prices to weaken again, potentially reaching a low in 2028, while the global lithium market could remain oversupplied through 2030.

That changes the question investors should be asking about POSCO.

The key is not how much higher lithium prices can climb. It is whether POSCO can still make money when they fall again.

Lithium Has Nearly Doubled — But BMI Says It Has Risen Too Fast

Recent lithium price movements suggest that market conditions have clearly changed.

According to Argentine financial newspaper Ámbito, citing BMI analysis, Chinese lithium carbonate prices have risen around 29% this year and are roughly 87% higher than a year ago.

Prices on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange have climbed to around $22,500 per tonne.

BMI has responded by raising its average lithium carbonate price forecast for this year to $20,100 per tonne, almost double last year's average of roughly $10,502.

Its forecast for lithium hydroxide stands at $19,600 per tonne.

Viewed in isolation, these numbers might suggest that another lithium supercycle has begun.

BMI's interpretation, however, is very different.

The firm argues that temporary supply disruptions rather than a structural shortage of lithium have played a significant role in the rally.

One example is CATL's Jianxiawo mine in China. Delays in restarting the operation have raised supply concerns and supported prices. A prolonged disruption at the mine could affect roughly 4% of global lithium supply.

Production in Argentina has also faced disruption from severe weather, including heavy snowfall in July. Local media reported that POSCO's lithium operation in Catamarca was among the projects affected.

Globally, however, lithium supply continues to expand.

BMI expects worldwide lithium production to rise by around 13% this year, while demand growth is projected to slow sharply from approximately 19% last year to just 5.8% this year.

Prices have surged, but the underlying supply-demand balance does not yet point to a sustained structural shortage.

$14,500 in 2028…The Real Test for POSCO

BMI's longer-term forecast makes the warning clearer.

It expects lithium carbonate prices to decline to $16,500 per tonne in 2027 before falling further to $14,500 in 2028.

Prices are then forecast to recover to $17,500 in 2029 and $18,500 in 2030.

Even more important is the supply outlook.

BMI expects the global lithium market potentially to remain oversupplied through 2030, with a structural deficit emerging only sometime between 2031 and 2035.

If that forecast proves correct, the way POSCO's lithium business should be evaluated changes significantly.

POSCO has expanded its brine-based lithium operations around the Hombre Muerto salt lake in Argentina. During the lithium price collapse, the combination of start-up costs and falling selling prices placed pressure on the business.

Conditions are now improving.

Stabilizing production and recovering lithium prices are raising expectations for stronger profitability at POSCO's Argentine operations, while the group continues to pursue additional production capacity.

It is also securing long-term demand through arrangements including lithium supply agreements with SK On.

But that is precisely why 2028 matters.

Making money when lithium trades above $20,000 a tonne is relatively straightforward. Genuine competitiveness becomes visible when prices fall back toward $15,000.

If POSCO's Argentine brine operations can achieve low production costs and economies of scale, they could remain competitive even through another downturn.

If costs remain too high, however, the earnings improvement generated during the current price rebound could disappear again.

In that sense, 2028 could become not only a test for lithium prices, but a test of POSCO's underlying cost competitiveness.

POSCO's Long-Term Lithium Bet Will Be Decided by Costs — But Forecasts Have Limits

POSCO's move into Argentine lithium was not an overnight decision.

The group acquired the Hombre Muerto salt lake in Argentina for approximately $280 million in 2018 and has continued investing heavily since then. Including the years spent on exploration and technology development, POSCO's lithium strategy represents a long-term industrial project.

The objective is clear.

POSCO wants to move beyond purchasing and processing raw materials and become a company that directly controls and produces lithium resources.

The benefits of that strategy become particularly visible when lithium prices rise. Companies that own resources can capture more of the upside than manufacturers forced to purchase increasingly expensive raw materials from external suppliers.

When prices fall, however, cost competitiveness determines survival.
If POSCO can expand output and improve process efficiency as planned, its Argentine brine operations may have room to reduce unit production costs. Long-term supply contracts could also help cushion the impact of short-term market volatility.

That does not mean BMI's forecast should be treated as a predetermined future.

Lithium price forecasting is inherently uncertain.

EV sales growth, Chinese battery policy, expansion of the energy-storage market, delays in new mines, resource policies in South America and geopolitical tensions can all significantly alter supply and demand.

Rapid growth in battery demand from AI-related data centers and energy storage, for example, could push lithium consumption above current forecasts. A renewed acceleration in global EV adoption could have a similar effect.

Conversely, faster-than-expected commissioning of new lithium projects in China, Africa and South America could prolong the period of oversupply.

BMI's forecast of $14,500 per tonne in 2028 is therefore a scenario, not a guaranteed price.

There is another analytical limitation: POSCO does not publicly disclose every detail of its production costs and long-term contract pricing. That makes it difficult for outside observers to calculate the exact break-even lithium price for its Argentine operations.

It is therefore premature either to declare POSCO's lithium strategy a success or to assume that a potential 2028 price decline would make it unsuccessful.

One thing, however, is becoming increasingly clear.

For years, the most important question surrounding POSCO's lithium strategy was how much lithium it could secure.

The next question may be much simpler.

How cheaply can it produce it?

If POSCO can remain profitable even when lithium prices fall again, its long-term investment in lithium will have demonstrated genuine global competitiveness.

If profitability depends on elevated lithium prices, today's recovery may prove to be little more than another commodity cycle.

The real test of POSCO's lithium strategy may therefore begin not while prices are rising — but when they fall again.
