[Mir's Global Radar] Hanwha's $1.50 Laser Goes Mobile — Armored Vehicle Production Planned for 2027, Export Talks Underway
Hanwha Systems is taking its low-cost laser air-defense technology mobile as it prepares to target overseas defense markets.
The company has completed a prototype of a 50-kilowatt high-energy laser mounted on an eight-wheel armored vehicle and plans to begin serial production by the end of 2027.
The concept represents a shift from the stationary Cheongwang laser currently used to defend strategic facilities toward a mobile system capable of tracking and engaging drones on the battlefield.
Hanwha is also already in talks with multiple potential customers in Europe, Asia and the Middle East over possible exports of the Cheongwang system.
According to U.S. defense publication Defense News on Sept. 8, Hanwha Systems unveiled details of its 50 kW Laser Armored Vehicle at the MSPO 2026 defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland.
Hyungun Park, manager of Hanwha Systems' laser system business team, told Defense News that the company had developed a prototype and plans to launch serial production of the vehicle by the end of 2027.
The vehicle platform has also been identified.
To create a mobile laser system capable of tracking fast-moving targets, Hanwha combined its 50 kW laser technology with the Tigon eight-wheel-drive armored personnel carrier.
While Korean reports had already disclosed Hanwha's display of a 50 kW mobile laser armored vehicle at MSPO 2026, the Defense News interview added details on the Tigon platform, prototype status, production timeline and overseas export discussions.
▲$1.50 Per Shot — A Low-Cost Drone Hunter
One of the biggest attractions of laser weapons is their cost efficiency.
Using expensive interceptor missiles to repeatedly destroy relatively inexpensive drones is increasingly difficult to sustain.
The proliferation of low-cost unmanned aircraft, highlighted by the war in Ukraine, has intensified this cost imbalance and pushed European militaries to search for cheaper counter-drone solutions.
Laser weapons offer a fundamentally different cost structure.
Park said a single Cheongwang laser shot costs around 2,000 Korean won, or about $1.50.
Instead of consuming a missile or projectile, the weapon uses electrical power to generate the laser beam. With sufficient power generation and cooling, it can repeatedly engage targets.
Cheongwang is already in service with the South Korean military as a stationary 20 kW laser air-defense system.
Hanwha Systems has developed high-energy fiber-optic laser technology designed to precisely engage small unmanned aircraft and multicopters.
The company plans to increase power and apply the technology to mobile platforms to counter more challenging threats.
The 50 kW armored laser vehicle represents that next step.
By increasing power and mounting the weapon on an armored vehicle, Hanwha is seeking to transform the technology from a stationary shield protecting critical facilities into a mobile shield that can accompany combat forces.
50 kW Laser on Tigon — Serial Production Targeted for Late 2027
The most notable aspect of the program is that Hanwha's laser weapon is moving beyond research and development toward a defined product.
Hanwha Systems has selected the Tigon 8×8 wheeled armored personnel carrier as the platform.
Combining an armored vehicle with a high-energy laser and tracking and targeting systems could create a mobile counter-drone platform capable of accompanying combat units and engaging incoming unmanned aircraft.
At 50 kW, the new system has 2.5 times the nominal power of the 20 kW Cheongwang.
Higher laser power can generally allow energy to be delivered to a target more rapidly, potentially expanding the range of threats and engagement conditions the system can address.
However, output alone does not determine effective range or kill capability. Atmospheric conditions, distance, target material and movement, beam quality and tracking performance all affect real-world laser performance.
Hanwha's timeline is specific. A prototype has already been developed, and the company plans to begin serial production by the end of 2027.
That indicates the system displayed at MSPO is intended as more than a conceptual demonstrator.
The growing demand among Poland and other NATO eastern-flank countries for inexpensive counter-drone defenses could provide Hanwha with an important market opportunity.
Export Talks With Europe, Asia and the Middle East
Hanwha's ambitions extend beyond South Korea.
Park told Defense News that the company is currently in talks with a number of countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East over potential exports of Cheongwang.
Specific countries, contract values and potential quantities were not disclosed.
It would therefore be premature to suggest that an export contract is imminent.
What is clear is that Hanwha is positioning its laser technology as an export product rather than limiting it to South Korean military deployment.
Europe is particularly significant because Hanwha has already established a substantial presence through the K9 self-propelled howitzer and K239 Chunmoo multiple-launch rocket system.
At MSPO, the group is displaying not only K9A2 and Chunmoo but also L-SAM, H-SHORAD, H-Shield and other counter-drone and air-defense systems as it seeks to expand from artillery into layered air defense.
Laser weapons could occupy the lowest-cost layer of such a defensive architecture.
Cheap small drones could be engaged with lasers, while more complex threats could be countered with guns, interceptor drones or missiles.
If K9 and Chunmoo opened the door for Korean defense exports in Europe, laser weapons could become one of Hanwha's next products to move through it.
Significant hurdles remain, including military performance requirements, testing, procurement decisions and the conversion of overseas discussions into firm contracts.
Nevertheless, the development of a mobile 50 kW laser vehicle aimed at serial production in 2027 marks an important step.
The war in Ukraine has demonstrated how inexpensive drones can reshape modern warfare and force militaries to rethink the economics of air defense.
Hanwha is now betting that a mobile laser costing roughly $1.50 per shot can become the next export chapter of Korea's defense industry.
