[Mir's Global Radar] Hyosung Heavy Industries' Norway 420kV Transformer Contract Grows 26% to 383.3 Billion Won

Hyosung Heavy Industries' contract to supply 420kV ultra-high-voltage transformers to Norwegian state-owned transmission system operator Statnett SF has expanded from an initial 303.5 billion won to approximately 383.3 billion won.

That represents an increase of roughly 79.8 billion won, or 26.3%, in just over two years.

According to regulatory filings, Hyosung Heavy Industries revised the value of its Statnett transformer supply contract on Sept. 30 from approximately 372.3 billion won to 383.3 billion won.

The latest revision alone represents an increase of roughly 11 billion won.

The underlying contract value used for the latest won conversion stands at NOK 2.931 billion.

What makes the contract particularly notable is that it did not jump to its current size all at once.

When Hyosung Heavy Industries initially disclosed the agreement in July 2024, the contract was valued at approximately 303.5 billion won.

It subsequently increased to 310.7 billion won, then 359.8 billion won, 372.3 billion won and finally 383.3 billion won.

The supply period has also been extended.

The original completion date of June 30, 2029 was first pushed back to October 30, 2030 and has now been extended to January 30, 2032.

In effect, one of Hyosung Heavy Industries' major Norwegian transformer contracts has quietly grown in both size and duration.

Why Did a 303.5 Billion Won Contract Grow to 383.3 Billion Won?

The contract dates back to July 2024.

Hyosung Heavy Industries signed an agreement with Statnett to supply 420kV ultra-high-voltage transformers.

Statnett is Norway's state-owned transmission system operator responsible for the country's national electricity grid.

At the time, Hyosung Heavy Industries described the overall business opportunity as worth approximately 330 billion won, with roughly 304 billion won of equipment initially contracted and additional option items expected to take effect later.

The original regulatory filing also stated that certain option items were included in the agreement but had not yet become effective.

The contract subsequently underwent a series of revisions.

In June 2025, its value increased from approximately 303.5 billion won to 310.7 billion won, while the completion date was extended from June 2029 to October 2030.

In January 2026, the contract increased again to approximately 359.8 billion won, with the completion date pushed to January 2032.

It rose again to 372.3 billion won in February and finally to approximately 383.3 billion won on Sept. 30.

Compared with the initial disclosure, the contract has grown by approximately 79.8 billion won.

However, describing the entire increase as a new 79.8 billion won order would not be accurate.

The public filings do not provide a detailed breakdown showing exactly how much of each increase resulted from the exercise of previously contemplated options, additional equipment or other contractual changes.

What can be confirmed is that both the contract value and the supply period have expanded substantially.

Not Just Bigger — The Supply Period Has Also Been Extended to 2032

The changing contract period is another notable feature.

When the agreement was announced in 2024, Hyosung Heavy Industries planned to deliver transformers to Statnett through 2029.

The current completion date disclosed in the filing is Jan. 30, 2032.

That is an extension of approximately two years and seven months.

The development comes as Norway expands investment in its national transmission network.

The country needs additional grid capacity to accommodate growing electricity demand and renewable power generation while also replacing aging infrastructure.

Ultra-high-voltage transformers are essential equipment in that process.

Large volumes of electricity generated at power plants must be transmitted over long distances at high voltage, requiring large transformers throughout the transmission network to manage voltage levels.

Hyosung Heavy Industries' 420kV transformers are designed for precisely this type of high-voltage transmission infrastructure.

The company has established a strong position in Norway's ultra-high-voltage transformer market while expanding its presence in other technically demanding European transmission markets including the United Kingdom.

The significance of the Statnett contract therefore goes beyond the simple export of Korean transformers to Europe.

What is notable is that an existing European transmission project has continued to expand in both contract value and duration after the initial order.

Norway's Expanding 420kV Contract Highlights the Long Game in Europe's Grid Market

Hyosung Heavy Industries' position in Norway was not built overnight.

The company developed Korea's first 154kV ultra-high-voltage transformer in 1969 and subsequently accumulated technologies spanning 345kV and 765kV power equipment.

In January, cumulative production of ultra-high-voltage transformers at its Changwon plant surpassed 10 trillion won.

The company now supplies electrical equipment to more than 70 countries.

Demand for ultra-high-voltage transformers is being driven not only by AI data center development in the United States but also by renewable energy expansion and aging-grid replacement across Europe.

Hyosung Heavy Industries' Changwon plant has secured more than 1 trillion won in annual orders for ultra-high-voltage transformers alone for three consecutive years since 2023.

The transformer business also differs from many one-off export markets.

National transmission projects develop over many years as utilities expand substations, replace aging equipment and connect new generation capacity to the grid.

Suppliers that establish technical qualifications and operating track records can therefore be positioned for subsequent orders.

That is what makes the Statnett contract particularly interesting.

A contract initially valued at approximately 303.5 billion won in 2024 has grown to 383.3 billion won over a little more than two years.

Its delivery period has also been extended from 2029 into 2032.

As global investment in electricity grids accelerates, the important question is no longer simply who wins a single large transformer order.

Increasingly, it is who can remain inside a country's transmission network and continue supplying equipment over many years.

Hyosung Heavy Industries' quietly expanding 420kV contract in Norway offers one example of that shift.
