[Mir’s Global Radar] Korean Battery Makers Gain Ground in U.S. Energy Storage Market as China Faces New Pressure
Korean battery manufacturers are gaining ground in North America's energy storage system (ESS) market as U.S. tariffs and supply-chain restrictions reshape competition with Chinese suppliers.
According to overseas business reports and data from battery market researcher SNE Research, LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI accounted for a combined 19.7% of North American ESS battery shipments in the first half of 2026, up from 13.9% a year earlier.
Chinese companies remain major suppliers, but growing regulatory pressure in the United States is creating new opportunities for Korean manufacturers with local production capabilities.
Korean Battery Makers Increase Their Share as U.S. Supply Chains Shift
The changing competitive landscape is reflected in shipment data.
According to overseas reports citing SNE Research, LG Energy Solution held 13.6% of North American ESS battery shipments in the first half of 2026, while Samsung SDI accounted for 6.1%. Their combined share reached 19.7%.
Chinese suppliers continued to dominate the market. CATL held 38.8%, and Hithium accounted for 17.2%, giving the two companies a combined share of 56%.
Nevertheless, the rising share of Korean manufacturers suggests that North America's battery supply chain is beginning to diversify.
U.S. trade and industrial policies are a major factor. Washington has raised tariffs on Chinese lithium-ion batteries used outside electric vehicles and introduced restrictions affecting certain foreign suppliers in energy projects seeking federal tax incentives.
An executive order issued in August also expanded the government's authority to restrict transactions involving foreign-produced power-grid equipment that presents national security risks. Battery energy storage systems fall within its scope.
These changes are encouraging ESS developers to consider not only battery prices but also manufacturing locations, ownership structures and eligibility for federal incentives when selecting suppliers.
Three Korean Battery Makers Pursue Different U.S. Strategies
Korea's three major battery manufacturers are approaching the U.S. ESS market through different strategies.
LG Energy Solution is expanding local production and increasing its supply of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The company aims to establish more than 50 GWh of ESS production capacity in North America by the end of 2026.
In June, it signed an approximately $1.6 billion LFP battery supply agreement with U.S. utility DTE Energy.
Samsung SDI is emphasizing its prismatic battery technology. The company is using its Indiana manufacturing operations to expand ESS production and has recently secured an additional supply agreement with a U.S. energy company.
SK On entered the ESS market later than its Korean rivals but is accelerating its expansion by converting existing electric vehicle battery facilities. In August, it signed an agreement to supply approximately 9 GWh of LFP batteries to NeoVolta Power over five years beginning in 2027.
LG Energy Solution is focusing on manufacturing scale and long-term contracts, Samsung SDI on prismatic battery technology, and SK On on production conversion and new customer acquisition.
Energy Storage Becomes a New Battleground Beyond Electric Vehicles
The expansion of energy storage is changing the demand structure of the battery industry.
According to SNE Research, global ESS battery shipments reached approximately 461 GWh in the first half of 2026, an increase of 71% from a year earlier. North American shipments rose 83% to approximately 75.9 GWh.
Rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence data centers and the expansion of renewable energy are key drivers of this growth.
While electric vehicle battery demand depends heavily on automakers' production plans and vehicle sales, the ESS market is driven by investment from utilities, data center operators and renewable energy developers.
This shift offers Korean battery manufacturers an opportunity to diversify their customer base. At the same time, price competition with Chinese suppliers, U.S. manufacturing costs and LFP battery capabilities remain critical challenges.
Korean companies have begun gaining market share in North American energy storage. The next question is how effectively they can convert that momentum into long-term supply agreements and sustainable earnings.
