HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is accelerating its push into South America's defense market by offering its export-oriented HDS-1500 submarine to Argentina, which currently has no operational submarines. Analysts view the proposal as more than a single defense sale, seeing it as part of South Korea's broader strategy to expand its defense footprint beyond Asia into Latin America.

아르헨티나는 2017년 독일제 잠수함 ARA산후안이 남대서양에서 실종돼 승조원 44명이 전원 사망한 이후 현재까지 운용 가능한 잠수함을 보유하지 못하고 있다. 해양 감시와 배타적경제수역(EEZ) 보호, 남대서양 전략 수역 관리 능력이 크게 약화되면서 잠수함 전력 복원이 국방정책의 핵심 과제로 떠오르고 있다.

Argentina has lacked an operational submarine since the loss of the German-built ARA San Juan in 2017, which claimed the lives of all 44 crew members. The incident left the country without an operational undersea capability, making fleet reconstruction a top national defense priority.

HD현대중공업이 제안한 HDS-1500은 약 1500톤급 디젤전기 잠수함으로 공기불요추진체계(AIP) 적용이 가능한 수출형 플랫폼이다. 장시간 잠항 능력과 현대식 전투체계, 소나, 어뢰 및 대함미사일 운용 능력을 갖춘 3000톤급 이하 중형 잠수함 시장의 전략 모델로 평가된다.

아르헨티나 사업은 단순한 함정 구매가 아니다. 잠수함 사업은 교육훈련, 정비(MRO), 부품 공급, 성능개량, 기술지원이 수십 년 동안 이어지는 장기 사업이다. 한국은 경쟁국 대비 가격 경쟁력뿐 아니라 빠른 납기와 기술협력, 후속 지원까지 포함한 '패키지 수출'에서 강점을 갖고 있다는 평가를 받고 있다.

Equipped with an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) option, advanced sonar, torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and extended underwater endurance, it is positioned as a competitive platform in the global medium-sized submarine market.

The Argentine submarine program extends far beyond the initial acquisition. Training, maintenance, spare parts, upgrades, and technical support typically continue for decades. South Korea is increasingly recognized for offering comprehensive defense packages that combine competitive pricing, faster delivery schedules, and long-term industrial cooperation.

업계에서는 이번 제안을 남미 방산시장 확대의 시험대로 보고 있다. HD현대중공업은 이미 여러 국가에 함정을 수출하며 해외 시장에서 경쟁력을 입증해 왔다. 만약 아르헨티나 사업이 성사된다면 향후 중남미 국가들의 해군 현대화 사업에서도 한국 방산기업의 입지가 한층 강화될 가능성이 크다. 또 향후 페루와 콜롬비아 등 잠수함 전력 보강을 추진하는 국가들에도 긍정적인 파급효과가 나타날 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

잠수함 수출은 조선사 한 곳만의 성과로 끝나지 않는다. 잠수함에는 전투체계, 소나, 통신장비, 센서, 무장체계, 전력장비 등 수백 개 국내 협력업체의 기술이 집약된다. 시장에서는 수출이 성사될 경우 HD현대중공업뿐 아니라 국내 방산 전자·무장·기자재 기업까지 수혜가 확산될 가능성이 높은 것으로 보고 있다.

Industry observers believe the proposal could serve as a gateway into the broader South American naval market. A successful deal with Argentina would strengthen South Korea's position in future modernization programs across Latin America, including countries seeking to upgrade their submarine fleets.

Submarine exports benefit far more than a single shipbuilder. They involve combat systems, sonar, communications, sensors, weapons, and power systems supplied by hundreds of specialized companies. If the deal proceeds, the positive impact could spread across South Korea's entire defense manufacturing ecosystem.
