[Mir’s Easy Business] From a $66 Billion Valuation to a 45% Plunge…China’s Unitree ‘Robot Bubble’ Raises a Question for Hyundai
Unitree surges 460% on its STAR Market debut to a $66 billion valuation, only to lose about $30 billion in market capitalization
Despite impressive humanoid technology, commercialization remains at an early stage as concerns over AI and robotics valuations grow
Hyundai bets on deploying Boston Dynamics’ Atlas in factories as the robotics race shifts from demonstrations to monetization
Chinese humanoid robot maker Unitree’s shares have plunged just days after a spectacular stock-market debut, reigniting debate over a potential bubble in the global robotics industry. Few dispute that artificial intelligence and humanoid robots represent major future growth industries. The bigger question is whether valuations are running far ahead of companies’ ability to generate real profits.
According to Reuters and Singapore’s Straits Times, Unitree’s shares surged roughly 460% from their IPO price on their first day of trading on Shanghai’s STAR Market on Aug. 19. At one point, the company’s valuation reached approximately $66 billion.
The enthusiasm did not last long. The shares subsequently fell about 45% from their peak, wiping out roughly $30 billion in market capitalization. Reuters linked the sharp volatility to broader concerns over lofty valuations surrounding Chinese AI and robotics companies.
Unitree’s experience is about more than the share price of a single Chinese robotics company. As Tesla and Chinese companies accelerate their humanoid development efforts, it also raises a question about how investors should value Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics strategy centered on Boston Dynamics.
The competitive benchmark for robots is shifting from “how human-like can they move?” to “how much productivity and economic value can they create in real industrial environments?”
Running, Dancing and Even Flipping…But How Much Money Can Robots Actually Make?
Unitree is one of China’s most closely watched robotics companies.
It develops humanoid and quadruped robots and has attracted worldwide attention through videos showing its machines running, dancing and performing martial-arts-like movements.
The challenge is the gap between technological attention and commercial performance.
According to Reuters, Unitree’s robots have yet to achieve widespread commercial deployment in industrial environments. Its adjusted net profit in the first quarter was around 40 million yuan, down 53% year on year. Despite that, the company’s valuation reached $66 billion on its first day of trading, fueling debate over whether expectations had gone too far.
China’s industrial policy is also part of the story. Beijing is promoting robotics as a strategic industry in its technological competition with the United States. Investors are therefore pricing not only current earnings but also the potential size of the future market and expectations of policy support.
That does not mean expectations surrounding humanoid robots are necessarily misplaced.
If humanoids can replace or assist workers in factories, logistics centers, construction sites and service industries, they could eventually create a market comparable in scale to major existing industries.
But a company that can build impressive robots is not necessarily the same thing as a company that can make money from robots.
That is the first question raised by Unitree’s dramatic rise and fall.
Hyundai Takes a Different Path…Sending Robots to Factories Rather Than Just Putting on a Show
This is where Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics strategy becomes particularly relevant.
Hyundai Motor Group acquired a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank in 2021. At the time, there was considerable debate over why an automaker needed to own a robotics company.
Five years later, the strategy is becoming much clearer.
Hyundai Motor Group is moving toward deploying Boston Dynamics’ next-generation humanoid robot, Atlas, in automotive manufacturing environments.
Atlas’ most important competitive advantage may not be its impressive movements themselves. Rather, Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing network can serve as a massive real-world testbed where robots can be deployed, trained and gradually commercialized.
Hyundai Motor Group operates automotive manufacturing facilities across the world, including South Korea, the United States, India, the Czech Republic, Türkiye and Brazil.
Automotive plants involve numerous repetitive and physically demanding tasks, including parts handling, assembly and inspection. If humanoids can perform such work reliably, they could help address labor shortages while improving productivity.
That points to a potential advantage Hyundai has over standalone robotics companies.
Hyundai can become a customer of its own robots before selling them to others.
By deploying robots in its factories, collecting data and improving the technology based on real-world use, the group can create a virtuous cycle of development and commercialization.
결국 핵심은 ROI(투자 대비 수익)다.
$66 Billion Unitree vs. Hyundai’s Atlas…The Real Battle Is Monetization
The humanoid robotics industry is moving beyond the early stages of technological development and toward a full-scale commercialization race.
Tesla is pursuing plans to deploy Optimus in its own factories, while Chinese companies are seeking to capture the market with cost-competitive products. Unitree has emerged as one of the most prominent representatives of China’s humanoid robotics industry.
Hyundai Motor Group has entered the same race through Boston Dynamics.
What is particularly interesting is that Hyundai and Tesla, already rivals in the automotive industry, are increasingly competing not only over who can build better vehicles but also over who can successfully deploy humanoid robots in real manufacturing environments first.
In this competition, spectacular robot movements are unlikely to determine the ultimate winner.
What will matter is how much each robot costs, how much human labor it can replace or assist, how many hours it can operate reliably each day and whether the productivity gains justify the investment.
Ultimately, the key metric will be return on investment.
The fact that Unitree briefly commanded a valuation of $66 billion immediately after its listing demonstrates how much value capital markets see in the future of humanoid robotics.
Its subsequent 45% plunge, however, suggests investors are beginning to ask robotics companies a much tougher question: “When and how will you actually make money?”
The same question applies to Hyundai Motor Group.
When Hyundai acquired Boston Dynamics, the question was “Why does an automaker need a robotics company?”
Now the question is changing.
“When can Hyundai turn Boston Dynamics into a profitable business?”
That may ultimately be the most important question Unitree’s stock-market roller coaster raises for Hyundai Motor Group.
