[Mir's Global Radar] Poland Moves to Service the FA-50's "Heart" at Home as F404 Depot Maintenance Plan Advances
Poland has begun taking steps toward maintaining the "heart" of its Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50 light combat aircraft — the engine — domestically.
Following earlier cooperation on FA-50 aircraft maintenance, Poland is now exploring the establishment of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and depot-level maintenance capabilities for the F404-GE-102 engines powering its fleet.
GE Aerospace and Poland's state-owned Military Aviation Works No. 2, or WZL-2, signed a memorandum of understanding at the International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO) in Kielce on Sept. 10.
Under the agreement, GE Aerospace and WZL-2 will assess the requirements necessary to establish domestic F404-GE-102 maintenance capabilities.
Specific investment amounts, facility size and implementation schedules have not yet been disclosed. The agreement therefore represents a formal step toward assessing and developing the capability rather than a final decision to establish a depot-maintenance facility.
The potential scope, however, is significant.
The agreement covers the engines associated with all 48 FA-50 aircraft ordered by Poland as well as spare engines.
Poland ordered 48 FA-50s from KAI in 2022. The first 12 FA-50GF aircraft were delivered in 2023, while the remaining 36 are scheduled to be supplied in the FA-50PL configuration.
The development indicates that Polish-Korean cooperation surrounding the FA-50 is moving beyond aircraft acquisition and airframe support toward the engine maintenance ecosystem.
From Airframe to Engine — Poland Expands Its FA-50 Support Network
Poland's localization of FA-50 maintenance did not begin with the latest agreement.
KAI and WZL-2 signed an MRO cooperation agreement in 2024 covering the 48 FA-50 aircraft exported to Poland.
Because combat aircraft such as the FA-50 can remain in service for decades, maintenance, spare parts and operational support represent an important long-term market beyond the initial aircraft sale.
The localization effort has since become more concrete.
WZL-2 said in June that it successfully completed an audit conducted by KAI covering its ability to provide operational support for FA-50GF and FA-50PL aircraft after their warranty periods expire.
According to WZL-2, KAI subsequently recommended the Polish company as prime contractor for a future FA-50GF operational-support contract, with KAI serving as a subcontractor.
The engine is now being added to that structure.
GE Aerospace, manufacturer of the FA-50's F404-GE-102 engine, and WZL-2 have formally begun assessing the requirements for establishing engine MRO and depot-level maintenance capabilities.
The FA-50 support structure could therefore evolve from aircraft supply and airframe maintenance toward a broader ecosystem covering both aircraft and engines.
For combat aircraft, the decades of maintenance, parts replacement and upgrades following the initial purchase can be as strategically important as the acquisition itself.
The development illustrates how Korean defense exports are increasingly moving from a competition over units sold toward a competition over who builds and controls the long-term support ecosystem.
48 Engines Plus Spares — Poland Seeks Operational Independence
One of the most notable elements of the agreement is Poland's emphasis on "operational independence."
WZL-2 CEO Jakub Gazda said cooperation with GE Aerospace provides an opportunity to develop expertise in servicing F404-GE-102 engines and stressed Poland's goal of developing and retaining increasingly advanced maintenance capabilities domestically.
Such capabilities, he said, strengthen the security and operational independence of the Polish Armed Forces.
GE Aerospace similarly said establishing F404 engine support inside Poland would be important for ensuring military readiness and equipment availability.
The strategy reflects a broader shift in Europe's defense market.
Countries purchasing major weapons systems increasingly seek not only the equipment itself but also domestic maintenance, spare-parts support and, in some cases, local production capabilities.
Dependence on overseas maintenance can become a vulnerability during wartime or supply-chain disruptions.
Poland has pursued a similar approach as it acquires large quantities of Korean defense equipment, including K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers.
The FA-50 program is increasingly moving in the same direction.
The aircraft were acquired from South Korea, but Poland is seeking to build the capability to support an increasing share of the fleet domestically over its operational lifetime.
The FA-50's Next Export Battle Is the Aftermarket
The expansion of Poland's FA-50 maintenance capabilities also carries implications for KAI.
In the global combat-aircraft market, long-term maintenance, spare parts and upgrades can be as strategically important as selling new aircraft.
If KAI seeks additional FA-50 customers in Europe, it will need to demonstrate not only performance and competitive pricing but also the ability to keep aircraft operational with efficient regional support.
According to GE Aerospace, more than 4,000 F404 engines have been delivered worldwide and have accumulated more than 13 million flight hours. Around 300 power the T-50, TA-50 and FA-50 family produced in South Korea.
If Poland ultimately establishes both aircraft and F404 engine maintenance capabilities, the European support infrastructure surrounding the FA-50 could become significantly stronger.
At this stage, however, it would be premature to describe Poland as an officially designated European FA-50 MRO hub.
The GE Aerospace-WZL-2 agreement remains an assessment of the requirements needed to establish engine maintenance capabilities, and decisions on facilities and implementation schedules have yet to be announced.
Even so, the direction is becoming increasingly clear.
What began with Poland's purchase of 48 FA-50 aircraft in 2022 is expanding beyond finished-aircraft exports toward domestic operational support, airframe MRO and potentially depot-level engine maintenance.
That transition is important for the long-term competitiveness of Korean defense exports in Europe.
The next FA-50 export battle may not be decided solely by flight performance or price.
The ability to keep the aircraft flying reliably for decades could become just as important as the ability to sell it in the first place.
