[Mir's Business Made Easy]South Korea Sells $23.8 Billion in US Treasuries but Buys $42.2 Billion in US Stocks

South Korean investors are selling US Treasury securities on a large scale. Yet during the same period, they have purchased tens of billions of dollars in US equities. While one set of transactions suggests capital moving away from US government debt, another shows continued investment in American companies.

According to the US Treasury's Treasury International Capital (TIC) data, investors resident in South Korea sold approximately $23.8 billion in long-term US Treasuries on a net basis between January and August 2026. That marked the largest net selling for the comparable period since records began in 1977. During the same eight months, they purchased a net $42.217 billion in US equities.

Net equity purchases exceeded net Treasury sales by approximately $18.4 billion. The figures challenge the simple narrative that Korean capital is abandoning US financial markets.

The more important story lies in the divergence between lending money to the US government in exchange for interest income and investing in American companies for potential capital gains and other returns.

Sold US Treasuries, Bought Stocks…Eight Months of Diverging Investment Flows

US Treasuries are among the world's most important safe-haven assets. Issued by the US government and denominated in dollars, they have long served as instruments for central banks, pension funds and insurers seeking liquidity and relatively stable interest income.

South Korea has been part of this financial system. Dollars generated through exports and international investment have traditionally flowed into US Treasuries and other dollar-denominated assets.

Investment patterns, however, have diverged this year.

According to a Bloomberg analysis published on October 28, countries and regions closely aligned with Washington purchased a net $174.3 billion in long-term US Treasuries during the first eight months of 2026, more than 60% below the comparable period a year earlier.

Japan's net purchases amounted to just $389 million, while South Korea recorded net sales of $23.8 billion. Taiwan also became a net seller.

US Treasury data on Korean residents' equity transactions tell a different story.

Korean investors purchased a net $11.548 billion in US equities in January, $15.113 billion in April and $7.173 billion in August. Despite net selling in February and July, cumulative net purchases reached $42.217 billion over the eight-month period.

The contrast is significant. Demand for US financial assets has not disappeared. Instead, investment flows are moving in different directions depending on the asset class.

Investing in Corporate Growth Rather Than US Government Bonds

Why are Treasury and equity investment flows moving in opposite directions?

One explanation lies in the changing environment for government bonds. Large US fiscal deficits, rising federal debt and uncertainty over future interest rates influence the attractiveness of long-term Treasuries. Although bonds provide contractual payments when held to maturity, their market prices generally fall when yields rise.

Higher bond yields in other countries can also reduce the relative appeal of US government debt. Investors who once regarded Treasuries as an automatic destination for capital now have more alternatives.

Equities operate under a different investment logic. Shareholders focus on corporate earnings, revenue growth and business prospects rather than the government's ability to repay debt.

Growth expectations surrounding artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cloud computing and data centers have helped attract international investors to US companies.

Government bonds offer interest income, while equities offer potential capital gains and dividends. The sources of return and the risks are fundamentally different.
This divergence also matters for the US economy.

Heavy foreign purchases of American stocks do not automatically ease the federal government's financing needs. Demand for corporate equities and demand for Treasury securities are determined in different markets.

Even if the United States continues attracting global capital, a greater preference for equities over government bonds could leave the Treasury facing pressure to offer higher yields to secure sufficient buyers.

Not the End of the Dollar, but a Shift in Investment Strategies…New Risks for South Korea

The most important distinction is that selling US Treasuries does not necessarily mean abandoning the dollar.

A Korean investor who sells Treasury bonds but purchases US equities remains exposed to dollar-denominated assets. The investment destination changes, but exposure to US financial markets and the dollar continues.

The data do not establish that proceeds from Treasury sales were directly used to purchase stocks. Treasury statistics measure net transactions by asset category; they do not trace how individual investors redeploy money raised from specific sales.

The figures also cover investors resident in South Korea, including financial institutions and other market participants, rather than retail investors alone.

Nevertheless, the simultaneous occurrence of large Treasury net sales and substantial equity net purchases is notable.

For investors, the changing allocation creates both opportunities and risks.

US equities can generate strong returns when corporate earnings and share prices rise. But losses can be substantial when growth expectations weaken or markets experience sharp corrections. Exchange-rate movements also affect returns measured in Korean won.

For the US government, the challenge is different. Global investors may continue placing high valuations on American companies without automatically purchasing government debt at the same pace as before.

South Korea's net sales of $23.8 billion in US Treasuries and net purchases of $42.217 billion in US stocks offer a revealing snapshot of this changing financial landscape.

The more important question is no longer simply whether global capital is leaving the United States. It is **which American assets that capital chooses to own.
